We had a fantastic time staying at Wilpattu house over 5 days from 31.05.2022-04.06.2022. Sereno is a great host, and was very informative about the local area as well as the country as a whole. We regularly asked him questions about where to go next and what to do there (we are backpacking Sri Lanka over the course of a month) and he gave many great suggestions. While staying with him my wife and I undertook 3 days safari in Wilpattu national park where we saw 3 leopards, sloth bear, elephants, water buffalo and many other mammals, birds and reptiles! A local river beside Sereno’s property was very refreshing to take a dip in and we had the whole river practically to ourselves! Special thanks go to Sereno’s staff who cooked truly amazing local cuisines for us while we were there.

The accommodation is simple, which Sereno always makes clear on his website. Guests should be aware of this when booking as my wife and I had a great time, but understand that it may not be for everyone. Brits who aren’t used to wall-to-wall heat and humidity should be aware that there is a fan in the room to make you comfortable, but the tropical heat can be a bit punishing if you are used to air con in warm weather. Regardless, certainly for the cost-conscious this is a steal, and made all the better because of the friendly, approachable host who ensures you have an enjoyable stay!

Had the best time at Wilpattu House!

Both Sereno & Kumari were great.    Cooking and arranging safari into the NP as well as taking us for walks to the river spot amongst birds and dragonflies to swim in the heat of the day.   Sitting under the big tree at night with a cold beer was simply fantastic.

Super relaxing and chilled out

Very nice spot, nice swim in the river, great talks with the owner. No Lonely Planet thing ;-). Wel organised trip into Wilpattu National Park, but the best were the conversations with the owner!. Also very good commuication, as we travelled from the north and the road from Mannar was closed a very good alternative with a temple to visit half way, who was maybe the nicest one we have seen! To be recommended!

Great tranquille spot

We had 3 lovely days at wilpattu house situated in a natural environment with cute cats and dogs! During the evening and night you can hear a lot of animals and even the owner (Serano) took us on a trip in the evening to look for fireflies and elephants. Also he arranged a driver for us in wilpattu and that guy was a great friendly guide. We had a nice day in wilpattu. Furthermore we had some delicious meals from Kumari and after dinner we had some great laugh's near a small campfire. Overall we loved this place a lot and would recommend it to everyone who loves a natural and serene stay.

Lovely place to stay

We didn’t stay at this place so we can’t say anything about the place itself. But friends of ours were staying here and arranged the (full day) safari to Wilpattu NP. We were joining from near the main entrance (other entrance was closed because of water). They left around 5:30, however, at 6:00 they were still not at our place. Eventually we arrived at the gate at 7:30 (!!). Then, buying the tickets etc. all very slow. Everybody knows the early morning and late evening are the best times for wildlife, but we already missed the morning. In the afternoon we rushed to the gates to be there at 5. Driver said the park was open until 5. Not true, open until 6. So we missed the evening as well. At that time we didn’t know, but we’re really pissed about it now. Had to pay the full package, missed the best of it. Please don’t do this to your costumers anymore. 
Apart from this all, the driver was a kind guy and I’m sure he can be a good safari guide. Unfortunately our experience wasn’t really good ;).

Safari

Good place for a whole day visit to Wilpattu National Park. Sereno couldn't be there because he took care of a friend in the hospital,but he took the time to answer to questions over the phone and he wrote some nice suggestions about visiting the country. Meanwhile his partner Kumari took good care of me. She and her team made good tasty food for the day.

Our family enjoyed our stay here. Kumari cooks great Sri Lankan dishes and Sereno is excelent source for information about traveling around Sri Lanka. Accomodation is basic, but this way you get to be close to the nature.

Great way to enjoy wildness

We stayed here just one night and it was amazing! Sereno organised a safari for the next morning and took us for a swim which was exactly what we needed after our trip up from Negombo! Sereno went above and beyond to help us plan our journey, he is a wealth of information and more than willing to share travel tips. Kumari and her daughter cooked us a beautiful dinner and made us a packed breakfast for our safari. We saw an elephant, buffalo, wild boars, monkeys, crocodiles, two kinds of deer and countless types of birds (including a serpent eagle!). The safari guide managed to drive and spot wildlife that we didn't even spot from our view, he was amazing! We were so happy we decided to stay here, thank you Wilpattu House, you made us feel right at home!
