Our stay at Hotel Roman was brilliant: we had a clean room, it was warm despite the cold winds outside, and everything worked. The hotel is right on the river with excellent views. You have access to the Roman baths and massage inside, or the public small pools by the river.

The staff could not have been more helpful, despite our non-existent Romanian they were friendly and welcoming.

You also get money towards one of your meals (40 ROM), and as the restaurant is cheap anyway it all works out as a bargain. 

The town of Baile Herculane is beautiful and worth a visit, the experience, location, and history of Hotel Roman make it worth a visit.

Well, writing this review for readers who have a fair understanding of what price/ quality means and also what are they looking for when booking a hotel. 
I start with clarifying that Hotel Roman is listed on their website being a 2 stars hotel , so I don’t understand some visitors who complain that it doesn’t feel and look like a 5 stars hotel. I’ve been traveling quite a bit all over the world , have seen places and can say that this place is not bad, I mean not bad at all for the money you spend and the location it’s is. 
I am a Romanian-American citizen with a residence in USA. Came for the winter holidays took my parents and went to Baile Herculane for few days since I remembered this place was always awesome and I found that still is. My parents wanted to be close to the Roman hot springs so I read like everyone else the reviews on TripAdvisor for Hotel Roman. Found bad reviews, I mean horrible reviews and I hesitate at first. My parents insisted they wanted at the Hotel Roman so I agreed and I’m happy I did. Greeting was excellent, rooms were updated, clean floors, clean bed sheets, bathroom nice and clean as well( I attached few pictures) 
- the pool was great( we were spending almost the whole time there) maybe they need more lounge chairs and replace few tiles. The view from my balcony was wonderful. The restaurant was nice, the food need a bit improvement, but was not bad. The staff is welcoming and helpful. 
Over all for the price, we had excellent conditions and I’m planing to return this here in September with few American  friends who will travel to see Romania.

Brilliant stay in a brutalist beauty.

Decent hotel

Treatment is worth every penny !!! [ RECOMMWNDED!] TOP OF THE BEST YOU WOULD GET IN THE WHOLE SPA CENTRES in Herculane !! 

Staff are exceptionally helpful and always doing their best! 

Management … awfully selfish & never available (rather ruthless!) 

Prices are above&beyond Country’s Economic stage !!

Disclaimer given, we only used the pool.
The receptionists were friendly and full of information.
If you wish to travel back in time to a beton loving communist feel, you will certainly like this. The pool itself is a somewhat refreshed classic thermal bath, with a view on the mountains, but the changing rooms have certainly seen better days (several decades ago). It would need an overall pro maintenance team to bring the pool area back up to standards. But it was a fun experience.
The location itself is great.
However, dropping into the restaurant to see what they had, the only two waiters seemed more interested in showing each other things on their phone rather than any of the customers (im)patiently sitting there.

For those people not having lived through the former Red times, or wanting to relive them, this place will certainly tend to your wishes.

review of pool facilities

I was here three years aga and again this month . Nothing improved since. They have a turistic gold mine but all for nothing . The Imperial Roman Bathrooms , remaked 200 years ago for the austrian emperors looks like then . Only that over the red marble now there is a green carpet. Even the personal looks like from an old edge . 
The hotel is 2 stars at his best , but is in a proces of improvmend sice I was first time . So far , no results . 
Too bad . 

Poor services

Hotel Roman, is located in an amazing location (lucky me to have a beautiful snowing morning). anyhow the location is a pretty one next to the Cerna river and the forest. Is a quiet location , very good for relax. But..
the rooms are small with very old doors and furniture despite the LCD tv  with few programs. bathrooms is clean but only soap bar is provided. yo be mentioned the clean towels. That's all folks. Heating is provided with AC converters but only in the room witch is not sufficient to heat the bathroom, during the cold period.
breakfast is included in price ,and you will receive a value ticket for meal. But a whole day ticket is equal to pay an scrambled 2 eggs with ham , cheese an mushroom and a very very strong and good espresso.
From my point of view to expensive for nothing good. 
Anyhow the location still remain a very nice one and if you are lucky you will find in operational mode the old roman bath with thermal water. It worth if you don't expect to mu"ch. Other location offer better conditions.
I would like to mention the staff support to be ok. Maybe in few year will be the best from Baile Herculane. Wish you luck.

Money for too less

It was the worst hotel I have ever seen in my life. Even worst than the hotels in India or sri Lanka.  The rooms dirty.  The toilet even worst, lack of hygiene, old material, broken pipes and bathroom flooding. In the reception they denied to  speak in English although they knew,  and they told me that there is Romania and not Europe. In this hotel you can't pay with card but only by cash.  Only the people in the restaurant were very high standard. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!
They denied to a mother to boil water for her baby, saying it's not their problem. 

P.S: keep the coupons for when you return in communism... you gonna need them.

Back to communist years...

I stand in the restaurant of this hotel while writing the review and keep thinking if every guest at every table is trapped helplessly in the same nightmare from 50 years ago.
I’ve stayed in old Romanian hotels before, but this one takes the crown for the lack of comfort and hygiene. Dirt and communism are oozing from every corner and crevasse, and there are lots of crevasses. The furniture in the room is decrepit, the centerpiece being the flatscreen TV which is useless besides the old mattresses.
The bathroom looks like if it were part of the baths 2000 years ago and only visitors passed by, because rust and decay and who knows what bacteria are present everywhere. We decided for safety reasons we will shower at the next hotel. Actually we are confused why we haven’t left the minute we saw the room.
The basement with the Roman baths is a gem, like the entire falling apart town. Everything else is just incompetence and indolence, poverty and stupidity.
