We arrived back in Picton on the evening of the 15th February, and chaos reigned, much of it caused by the disruptions due to Cyclone Gabriella. Earlier in the week, many of the Cook Straits' ferries had been cancelled with huge inconvenience to the commercial and tourism industries, and people had frantically searched around for accommodation in Picton, and the surrounding towns including Blenheim. We had booked for our one night in the Palmira, so we were fortunate. There was still some uncertainty about the ferries running when we woke, after a restless night, so after a brief breakfast in the communal dining room, we packed and hurriedly left for the port. Fortunately we arrived early to find that our ferry was sailing, and after a 2 hours wait, reversed onto the vessel and set off down the exquisite Picton Sound to the open seas beyond. I would certainly stay here again, as I don't think this review does it proper justice.. Robert and Glenda made splendid mine hosts, and we loved  the Lodge and its idiosyncrasies, including its wall mounted horses and zebras. Worth every penny.   

Weird and wonderful.

We had a room on the top floor overlooking the pool and views of the water and surrounding hills. There were 3 of us---Delightful setting, Bob and Glenda were excellent in providing us with everything we needed and more. Nice little extras in the room as in cold bubbles and choccies on arrival. Very easy to get along with and thoroughly enjoyed their company. They weren't all over us---just a great mixture of friendliness and enjoyment when we were there. Neat pool and spa---great brekky and the pub only a 5 minute walk away serving good food in Waikawa Marina. We stayed for 3 nights and would definitely stay again. Thanks Bob and Glenda.

Enjoyable

I have stayed for two nights at Palmira Lodge and can recommend it. Rooms and bathrooms are clean and with everything you need. Bed comfortable. Breakfast is good and there are facilities to cook for yourself if you want. BBQ hot tub and swimming pool outside. A car is needed if you want to easily get down to Picton but it is near Waikawa marine. Had a very nice meal at the Jolly Roger there as recommended by Bob. A very welcoming place.

Lovely stay in a friendly place

Best value for money during our entire trip. Glenda and Bob are terrific hosts. Glenda’s flare for decor is evident and Bob’s work making the pool & spa area look enticing works a treat. The room was beautifully furnished, as was the living area. It was lovely to meet the friendly hosts but also some of the guests. The place is very clean and has so many extras such as pool towels, chocolates, very good breakfast supplies, free wifi, comfortable bedding, close to waterfront ( better than being in Picton) and a lovely ambiance. Would highly recommend = 5 stars !!

Absolutely fabulous 

Big thanks to our hosts Glenda and Bob for making us feel at home.  From the lovely room (with bubbly chilled in the fridge) to washing our clothes after hiking plus breakfast and way too many cakes and chocolates! Yes a bit out of town but well worth the stay and ambience.  Oh and the pool was super after a long day on the tracks!  thanks guys!

Home away from home!

I stopped here for a night before our morning ferry to Wellington.  Having spent the last 3 weeks in a campervan, when we walked into our beautiful room, it was like a little bit of heaven!  We had such a warm, friendly welcome.  The croissants and muffins were great in the morning.  The kitchen was very well equipped, and everything was so clean.  We would definitely stay again, and will never forget such a great place on our honeymoon.  Thanks for everything!

Lovely stay!

We had two rooms here, and everyone agreed it was a lovely place to stay. We arrived in the afternoon and although the hosts were out a quick phone call meant we could let ourselves in straight away.

Two of us went out exploring in the afternoon whilst the others were perfectly content soaking up the sun on the veranda and enjoy the comfort of the rooms and tranquility of the area!

Our hosts made a great recommendation for dinner at the beachcomber and on our return we enjoyed the common area downstairs before retiring to our rooms.

Everyone slept well. Shower was great. Bed big and comfy. It was a little bit cool for the small radiator to cope but we had blankets to keep us cosy.

In the morning the homemade bread and complimentary breakfast basics were a welcome surprise! 

A fabulous place to stay and enjoy the peaceful side of picton.

A truly lovely spot!

We were due to leave Wellington on the Bluebridge at 8:00 am but due to an accident on the motorway we missed that ferry but caught the 1:30 pm which became the 2:30 pm due to weather conditions.  Knowing that we wouldn't make it down the Kaikoura Coast before it closed I rang around for somewhere to stay and the Buccaneer were able to take us, even tho' both hosts were out attending meetings they left us a nice note on the table in the downstairs shared lounge and met up with the hosts the next morning.  A great night's stay in a comfortable room.  The downstairs lounge was full of board games, tourist brochures etc.  There were enough cooking facilities there for a large group.  The hot bread in the morning smelt and tasted devine.

Last minute booking due to late ferry

Buccaneer Lodge, Waikawa Road, Picton, New Zealand

We’d booked the Buccaneer Lodge two months ahead for our stay in Picton in early March – that gorgeous picture of a semi-tropical structure with a first floor balcony to one side and the views over Waikawa Bay out front clinched it. There had also been a handful of appreciative recommendations from those that had gone before. We knew that we’d chosen well. The Lodge is 10 minute drive from central Picton, but that’s no issue with a car; if you’re walking it would be more of a challenge.  
The slow ride along coastal road highway 1 from North Canterbury through Kaikoura that same day had also been interesting and if not just those iconic seascapes to the right of the road (heading north) but the investments, engineering complexity and the many hundreds of people and their earthmoving/road-making equipment assembled to stabilize and re-build the main artery to Christchurch and places south. Sure, there’s stop-start driving in places, but it simply means taking longer. It’s an easy run. Note those hazard-warning roadside information boards, however, as you head north.
Liked the image of those ‘lollipop men/women’ (young, smiling, wrapped in yellow waterproofs) waving to the passing cars on both sides of the road as we crept passed their stop/go signs.
The Lodge was smaller than it looked from the pictures – wooden building set back from the Waikawa Road across a patch of open ground, but with signboard out-front. Easy to find. There were four rooms on the first floor – fronting the veranda; we were allocated #3 by the friendly women who answered the call bell in the communal living/dining/kitchen room on the ground floor. It took her 10 minutes to introduce us to the services and to show us the room; access by long external staircase to one side of the building. Cars parked next to the Lodge.
We were given vouchers for the non-secure internet available, and invited to use a range of sauces, jams, tea/coffee, etc. (marked yellow dot) provided by the Lodge, some of which were in the large fridge. The other stuff in the fridge was personal to others. In the morning there would be fresh bread for breakfast – there was. Help yourself.
The room was large and comfortable – single bed in one corner, double bed to one side, small table/2x chairs next to it, television and handful of hooks/hangers fixed to the wall, and ensuite at the far end of the room. Heater – essential too; it was cold, raining and blustery. Electric jug/tea&coffee-making in the room, milk downstairs. 
Collection of soaps, body/hair washes, etc. in the modern and squeaky-clean ensuite. Lots of hot water, curtain across sloping floor - no step up/down entry. 
The room was quiet and we didn’t hear/see our neighbours – not surprising with that weather that evening.  Large wall length windows with view across to the bay. When the weather’s on your side, take a spell/drink outside on the veranda (seated under the roof over-hang).
We paid NZ$110 for the room; reasonable value when compared to accommodation elsewhere in the greater Picton area.

Warm room in an attractive Lodge on the edge of the Marlborough Sounds; stormy weather outside.

What a lovely place ! The greeting from Bob and Glenda was warm and genuine, so we were instantly made to feel at home. Our studio room on the ground floor was adjacent to the lounge and breakfast room (brekkie is included in the rate) and it was ideal for our overnight stay. Note that it doesn't have a TV, but who needs that anyway ?
The walls of the lounge area are adorned with pictures of zebras and suits the decor and overall setting of the lodge. Out the front are a spa and a swimming pool, both of which are cleaned on a weekly basis.
Palmira is a nice place and certainly worthy of a repeat visit one day.
