Where do we begin? The sign on the country road is unpretentious. You drive through the front gate and something wonderful happens. As a tired traveler you are amazed at the manicured grounds and the pristine external appearance of your accommodation. You are greeted warmly by Kerry who single handedly maintains an unbelievable property at the river's edge. Before you even think about looking at your room you can't help walking into the gardens along spacious trails admiring the flora. The elevated grounds slope gracefully down to the river and allow a peaceful view if the hills beyond.
Now it is time to meet Karen and see your host's chateau. This house shows what a genius architect can accomplish...modern, tasteful, efficient, warm, understated,inviting. Moreover the house and its side pavilions sit perfectly on the property commanding a tranquil overview of the forest, gardems, river, and hills. The wooden decks around the house make it so easy to think "how good is this?".
Your room is special too...every feature is thoughtfully provided, even stocked with your complimentary bottle of NZ wine, truffles, tea and coffee, fresh milk in the mini-fridge, and a cheese and cracker plate or fresh muffins just in case you are hungry from your travels.
Perhaps a late afternoon chat with karen and Kerry over wine.
After a very restful night its time for breakfast. Karen will satisfy you with fresh fruit, eggs, meats,and special treats such as chutney mushroom tomatoes to die for.
Its time to go with regrets but very happy memories. This place is very special.

As close to heaven as you will get at a "B and B".

Excellent quality room with an amazing view into secluded bush.  Hosts Karen and Kerry were very attentive and made a lovely cooked breakfast every morning. A 10 minute drive to Paihia and Waitangi, so close to all boat tours without being in the midst of all the tourists.

Great retreat

River Retreat was by far and away the most exceptional bed & breakfast I have ever had the pleasure of staying at. Warm, friendly and inviting hosts who were so gracious, generous and delightful, picturesque property with stunning gardens overlooking the river, a fabulous room with super comfortable bed, spotlessly clean, beautiful features and all the mod cons we have all become accustomed to in today's society! Extra bonus for the great water pressure in the shower too! The additional little treats such as a bottle of wine and truffles on arrival, as well as a gorgeous cheese plate and freshly baked sweets that we came back to after a day out were such beautiful touches. The fully cooked breakfast provided each morning in Karen & Kerry's homestead was magnificent, and it was such an enjoyable experience chatting with them and the other guests who were also staying. I have stayed at many different places around Australia, NZ, Asia & Europe and I can confidently say that River Retreat is up there with the best of the best.

Picturesque, indulgent and magnificent in every way!

A truly exceptional B & B providing very high standards in a delightful setting. Karen and Kerry are extremely good hosts and attention to detail is first rate. This was a remarkable find and frankly the experience exceeded our wildest expectations. Set a short drive from town the accomodation in the grounds of their beautiful home was tremendous.As international travellers themselves they have a wonderful understanding of the needs of discerning guests . Highly unlikely you will be able to better this experience and the breakfasts were both imaginative,healthy and superbly presented. Absolutely no hesitation in making the highest recommendation possible for River Retreat and Kerry and Karens great hospitatlity. Thank you.

EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE

Everything was superb and the hosts were amazing. They treat us with great breakfast, free bottle of excellent wine, free food treates in the afternoon, free towels for the beach. The place is peaceful and you feel like in heaven. Thank you Karen and Keery for the amazing stay in New Zealand.

Everything is amazing at this place. First of all: Karen and Kerry are wonderful hosts. 
Karen does make a superb breakfast every morning. Everything is fresh and it is presented just wonderful in the main building. You feel so welcome. We had very nice talks and discussions with the other guest and Karen. 
During the day you will find a little snack (muffin, cheese...)  in your room. It is delicious. 
The property and house itself is amazing. Huge and so beautiful. The rooms are very nice and perfect appointed and clean. Nothing is missing. You can feel that Karen has much experience with guest and she loves what she is doing.  We have stayed already all over the world in  beautiful houses and met many wonderful people. But River Retreat is really exceptional! We enjoyed our stay very much. Thank you!

The best you can get!       Highly recommended!

My partner and I booked into this secluded little BnB on the way to Paihia. The views out to the river were beautiful and the setting was very tranquil. The accommodation was top notch and the service even better. Breakfast was exquisite and we both left with very full tummies. I can't wait to go back to celebrate our anniversary and recommend this spot to my friends and colleagues. 

Wedding Night Accommodation

We enjoyed our stay a few days ago at this beautiful place sooooo  much! Best breakfast ever! Fresh fruits, best eggs and things aside! 
The room with a wonderful view is big and comfortable. We had all we need and more. Every day specials like cakes, cookies, crackers with a choice of cheese. 
You can also go down to the river and use the kayaks for free. You can have a barbecue riverside or just enjoy the view from above from your veranda. It is really so nice, new and clean. Thank you Karen!! Best host from the bottom of your heart.
