Stayed 3 nights in hostal Gaia.

PROS
* Value - being a hostal it offers great value (we paid around 450 mexican peso a night for a private triple room with shared bathroom)

* Rooms - Our room was large and comfortable

* Clean - The rooms and the shared bathroom facilities were kept immaculate the entire time we were here.

* Wifi - Worked well and reached our room. Internet did not drop out. Reliable.

* Hot water - Never ran out

* Friendly staff - Very polite and professional staff. Welcoming. Offer tour bookings for your convenience.

* Location - Within walking distance to town

* Shared facilities- has kitchen facilities as well as a TV room, pool table, ping pong table, etc.

CONS
* Noise - I think a lot of this was due to the neighbours. First night we were subjected to a techno rave until 0100 in the morning. Second morning we were woken by what I think were firecrackers from about 0630. That being said given the communal areas were located outside of our room we were also woken up by that. There was a sitting area on our roof so we could hear people walking around all night in our room. On the second day one of the residents got high on cannabis and played a didgeridoo for about 2 hours. This was annoying and inconsiderate.

* Not friendly - Seems to have a lot of long stay residents who just linger around the hostal common areas and never go anywhere. Any conversation seems to lead to a condescending lecture about how tourist activities are too commercial/unauthentic/mainstream.

Despite this it’s definitely a great place to stay and I think some of the cons will resolve with time.

Great facilities

Very nice hostel with a beautiful garden. Staff is friendly and helpful. Got pool and ping-pong table, TV for the movie nights and a fireplace for a little colder San Cris nights . Kitchen conditions good. 
Can be a bit of noisy at the street side of dorm, but earplugs work for me at night. Other than that, 200% worth of staying and deserves 5+ stars!

Really nice hostel

Great place to stay ! Staff is amazing and accommodations are great. Bathrooms are clean by staff almost after every use, hot shower, kitchen and space for your own food. The Breakfast alone is worth your money ! Also a really good place to book tours. I couldn't recommend more !

Great

We stayed at Casa Gaia for three nights and I had been a bit nervous because it didn't have as many reviews as other places but my worries were really quickly eliminated. This is a BRILLIANT place to stay and exceptional value for money.

The welcome we received from Sergio and the warmth and friendliness of he and the other staff was wonderful. They make you feel at home right away and, being local guys, are happy to provide tips and advice that was knowledgeable and tailored to us. The location is perfect - in a cool part of town (with nice cafes and art galleries etc) and round the corner from the main street but perfectly quiet and peaceful at night. The common areas are lovely - particularly the garden with the two happy pet hens (whose clucking was the most soothing sound to wake up to in the morning - like being in the middle of the countryside) and hammock to relax in. It definitely is NOT a party hostel which was perfect for us. There was ample opportunity to chat to the few other guests over breakkie or a game of pool there but otherwise it was quiet and that was exactly what we wanted.

Our private room was simple, immaculately clean and overlooking the garden with a decent amount of space to store our stuff and relax. Plenty of extra blankets were provided for colder nights and we were super snug every night we were there. 

There are two shared bathrooms and both are cleaned super regularly so are pristine. The showers are a good pressure and hot although the hot water doesn't last long so you have to be quick! 

I would recommend this place 100% - especially to couples and those who are looking for somewhere quiet, clean and friendly to come home to. 



Perfect base for exploring incredible San Cristobal

After being told I could use the kitchen facilities, day after day it was almost impossible to use the kitchen. The staff took over the kitchen. In fact they spent the day in the kitchen on a daily. They were in the kitchen whether to make their breakfast, lunch or dinner. or simply hang out in the kitchen. So this kitchen was not meant for guests. I felt misled upon checking in at Casa Gaia for a week.

Disappointed

My boyfriend and I have stayed at a lot of hostals all over the world, and this is by far our favorite. The owners Jonathan and Claire treat you like family, there is an incredible breakfast every morning, and the sense of community is incredible. Everyone staying at the hostal socializes with you and we have met some incredible people we will remember for a lifetime. We love you guys! 

Home Away From Home

Possibly one of the best hostels I've stayed in after travelling for close to a year. The place is spotless and they offer a huge breakfast included in the price: big bowl of fruit (3 different kinds), bread, jam and butter, coffee tea and 2 eggs to cook however you like. The rooms are cosy and while it's not a crazy party hostel (meaning you get a good nights sleep), it's very social. This hostel is perfect if you're travelling solo because it's small enough for everyone to talk to each other and the owners/staff often cook and eat together so the place really has a laid back, friendly, communal vibe. It is very much a place that you book in for two nights but are still there a week later because you feel so at home. 

They've got a dorm and private rooms that sleep from 1-5 so something for everyone. The rooms are colourful and really nicely decorated and a good size, the dorms have good sized lockers. The living room has a large tv and a lot of films to choose from in both Spanish and English. Kitchen is spotless and well equipped and the bathrooms have hot water with good pressure.

The best thing about this place though is the people. Great hostels attract great people and that's definitely the case here.
