Carnarvon House was in a great central location surrounded by heritage buildings and near to the clan jetties. It was also close to a convenient shopping mall with a grocer, and to the archaeological park which was a lovely stroll. Nicole was super friendly and helpful at check-in and let us know there was a market happening in the park during our stay, she was also really helpful with details about getting our washing done in house (amazing service, was 10MYR/kg when we visited in May 2023). The guesthouse had two lovely common areas, with filtered water, self service tea, coffee, fruit and snacks, and some basic kitchen amenities. The room was tastefully furnished with some heritage features (we stayed in the new building) and a comfy bed. The bathroom was clean and had the essentials, and fresh towels were provided every two days. We really enjoyed our stay at Carnarvon House and would absolutely recommend it!!

Great location and value, welcoming hospitality

Highly recommend this hotel to stay, close to the heart of Georgetown, just a few minutes walk to some attractions .  The room is clean & comfort. Thanks to both nice and friendly host Nicole & Kelvin made you feel home here. I will come back again ^^

Great hotel in the Heritage site of Penang

Just a perfect intro to Penang and Georgetown. A beautiful little place, halfway between an upscale hostel and a boutique hotel. 

It was my first visit to Penang, and initially I'd reserved at another, highly rated, Georgetown hotel, but my heart sank when I checked in, looked at the rows of  identical rooms, talked to the front desk staff who had no enthusiasm for their World Heritage city and minimal knowledge of what to see, where to go. I immediately checked out!

I checked TripAdvisor, and Carnarvon House was just a 15 minute walk away -- in a much more traditional part of town. What a contrast! It's in a quiet side street in the middle of traditional Georgetown, a small hotel with beautifully restored internal and external features. Greeted by  Nicole, the super friendly, knowledgeable co-owner, I admired the internal patio garden, the welcoming guest coffee/common room, and the choice of rooms. 

The upscale hostel part? There are no ensuite bathrooms -- the traditional and original layout doesn't allow room for that. But there are easily adequate toilet-shower-sink cubicles. As a solo visitor, I much enjoyed meeting other guests -- young folks and couples  from all parts of the world -- in the common room area. And Nicole was so helpful in advising about how to explore Penang -- and restaurant recommendations. A better concierge than in most upscale hotels!

A perfect place for a perfect Penang visit.



Just a perfect intro to Penang and Georgetown

Quaint little guest house located down a quiet street away from the traffic of Georgetown. We booked a double room with private bathroom located at the back of the house. The room was clean. Efficient check in and friendly staff. One remark is there was no breakfast available which would have been a great option.

Good location for street art and Little India

I stayed in the new wing of Carnarvon house, in a double bed room with a private bathroom. The room was spacious and bright, and everything was very clean. The owners of the house were extremely friendly and breakfast was always delicious! The house has an awesome location, very close to Armenian Street which makes walking around very easy. Would definitely recommend a stay here!

Lovely guesthouse stay

Compared to the hostels and budget hotels in the area, the reviews of this place were excellent, so I decided it was worth the extra money. 

Some of the basics were missing: no turn down service, just some towels left outside my room once in my 5 night stay. The shower head has no holder (or has one that doesn’t fit!) so it’s a one hand shower job. 

Lovely setting, well put together, clean and very friendly and relaxed setting. Just missing a few key details for the money. 

Lovely welcome, but not worth the money 

I spent 2 nights here with my friend. Our room had 2 single beds and was facing on the Main Street. Bathroom/toilets shared with other guests but always super clean! I usually prefer having my own bathroom but the place is very nice. The owners are very kind and friendly. I would highly recommend this place! Just remember that at 6 am there’s the call to prayer and it might wake you up!

Cool place!

We booked an ensuite bathroom room for 3 nights at this family run place when visiting Penang earlier this month. The room was relatively small but cleverly arranged to fit 2 twin beds (head to toe, not side by side), with just enough space for our carryon luggage. They provided 2 bottles of water at the day of arrival, and none after. The room was also cleaned and new towels provided every other day; we were told on the second day of our stay. 

If  you enjoy a homelike atmosphere, this might be a good place for you. It is minimal, clean, quite, you can do your hand wash and hang your laundry at the rear balcony on the second floor. There is no television in your room, you can go downstairs to the family room to watch it with the family (presumably lives on premises) and other guests.  Breakfast is served daily, cooked by the owner. Most notable was the pumpkin soup made by the owner on our second day of arrival. You can also use the fridge in the food prep area on the ground floor if you need anything refrigerated.

All and all, it was a pleasant and interesting experience. The owner and the property manager were helpful and courteous.  The place is within walking distance to the renown Chulia street, the Chew Jetty, and various other street arts.  It feels safe when walking back at night. The stay reminded me more of being at a relative's home or at a dorm rather than a hotel.

Safe and dorm like

The hotel is well-positioned, being right on the edge of the Unesco Heritage Zone and well within walking distance to all parts of the old town. I feel that the pictures on their website are very flattering. Our room was small, but adequate for a couple of nights, with good linen and spotlessly clean. An effective air-conditioner and fan, but the light on the AC unit made it fell like it was broad daylight - fortunately we had our eye masks - and the fan was quite noisy. The breakfast was wholesome and tasty, albeit without a lot of choice. Our only surprise was sharing a bathroom with up to 16 other people (i.e. the whole hotel!!).  We did not read the fine print. As it turned out, it was not the inconvenience we thought it might be.  Terry and Betty were really friendly and helpful. It is really well-priced.

Good value for an well-located upmarket hostel

Thank you to the owner and staff for the good hospitality. Chill vibes, old fashioned home style, CLEAN TOILETS! I've enjoyed my stay and the brekkies after my run. The location was good to visit some good coffee hangouts and local food, within 15 minutes walk radius.
