What a beautiful place this is! A traditional, old, Japanese inn that is taken care of by Naoki-San, the grandchild of the owner, and his family. We arrived shortly before check in time and as it was pouring rain outside, we stayed in the lovely book store/reading room and had some tea. Especially worth mentioning, aside the great hospitality and local tips of the family - the free bikes which allowed us to cycle around the lake (40-60 min. long) and the many "touches" that make this place feel like home. A coffee corner and a tea corner, a refrigerator you can keep your food in, extra cosmetic amenities in the shared bathroom and everything is so nicely designed. It is evident Naoki and his wife have a great aesthetic sense. If you look carefully, you can find design & art pieces all over. 
A special treat is the bonsai room - Naoki's fantastic collection (including a 120 years old Bonsai) is presented in a special lounge where you can enjoy your drinks and adore the plants. Thank you Naoki & family for a memorable stay!

Would have loved to stay longer, the best guest house we've been to!

We wanted a 2 day stop in the Fuji lakes area on our way from Tokyo to Kyoto as part of a family trip.  We selected this Ryokan purely on the basis of the Tripadvisor reviews.  We are very glad we did.

First, we cannot say enough good things about Naoki-san, the owner and innkeeper.  He goes to extraordinary lengths to make sure your stay is pleasant.  After arrival he gave us a very detailed overview of the Ryokan and the area, and made several recommendations about where to eat and what to do.  All of them turned out to be perfect for us.  When we needed help with anything, he was on top of it.  Wow!

Second, the Ryokan itself is a cool combination of old Japanese style with a relatively recent building (compared, for example to some in Kyoto that are vastly older structures).  Naoki-san clearly works very hard to continuously improve the property, and to keep it spotless.  We spent part of our first afternoon in the Bonsai room and loved it.  Western travelers should keep in mind that this property, like all Ryokans, has communal showers, baths and sinks as well as walls that don't dampen sound very much.  So bring your earplugs if you need to, because this place is worth it.

Third, the location is just off the road that circles Lake Yamanaka.  It's an easy base for riding the free bikes, going to the supermarket, and other eating and shopping options.  We particularly enjoyed riding around the lake on the bikes.

In summary - this is a great place to stay!

Perfect place to stay, recommended for families and couples.  Outstanding welcome from the owner Naoki san.
The hotel is simply wonderful in traditional design, clean and comfortable. Perfect location and free bicycles for hotel guest.

Amazing guesthouse 

At the time of this writing this place has a phenomenal rating of 9.8 on Booking, which turned out to be more than justified.

The property is an exquisite traditional Japanese building which the owner also lives in. Priced somewhat in the range of a hostel, it actually offers some sort of unique Ryokan experience, with authentic local settings, clean tatami rooms (and the family room is spacious), delicately decorated living area and even a public onsen style bath.

What make this place absolutely amazing is the hospitality of the owner himself. Naoki is a young, humble and cheerful father-of-a-3-yo who really knows his ways to communicates with the guests and make them feel comfortable. The entire stay felt like a visit to a friends' holiday house, and yet the checkin/checkouts and handled very professionally - something not very common in privately run accomodations.  

It's also worth noting that the property is located right next to Lake Yamanakako (where it's name came from), a fabulous spot to see and take photo shots of Mt. Fuji (with an particular stunning view due to its close proximity to the mountain and high altitude). It's also one of the few areas that offers views to both the "Inverted Fuji" and "Diamond Fuji" when the time and weather is right. The cycling tracking around the lake is very scenic and perfectly segregated from other traffic, and the property provides free bike rentals. 

The owner also seems to take maintaining the quietness very seriously. Group bookings are taken by the owner's own discretion, and there are no TVs in the rooms (seriously who still watch TV these days). The Five Lakes area is a busy tourist spot, making this place a top pick for us as a getaway from the crowds was exact what we were after. 

Meals are not provided, however there are good restaurants and a large supermarket within walking distance (very yummy diary and fruits for breakfast) so you won't run out of eating options even for extended stays. 

And don't be swayed by the shared bathrooms - they are spotlessly clean!

A Japanese couple runs this quaint old style hotel. They do everything themselves and have no hired help. The hotel was built by the current owner's grandfather 70-80 years ago. The rooms are spacious and the whole place is spotless clean. The owners are gracious and try their best to make your stay comfortable. 

The place had common bathrooms but that maybe the only negative that I can say about this place. The price is very reasonable and it is worth giving it a try.
