We stayed at Yukiyama Lodge for 6 nights, and we had a great time! The lodge owner was very friendly and always conjured up delicious meals. You sleep on futons (a type of Japanese bed on the floor) which are very comfortable. Also while we where there 25cm of powder snow came and skiing was fabulous! Overall I would definitely recommend Yukiyama Lodge as a place to stay if you go to Nozawa Onsen.

Well-maintained, great location, outstanding customer service! It's only a 3 minute walk to the gondola, spacious and warm dry-room to keep your equipment. The owner, Jimmy, has limited english, but goes out of his way to make you comfortable. He's always working hard, from shoveling, to serving food, to manning the desk. He even drove us to our long-term accommodation in town when we checked out, as they had a few days that there wasn't room for us. The bath downstairs was a great perk, as well, and very comforting after a long day on the slopes. Highly recommended!

The one drawback is that smoking is allowed in the lobby, and the smell lingers a bit.

How about $125USD per night, per room, including breakfast AND dinner? That's how much we paid over 5 nights, during this ski season, when it's dumping snow like crazy in Nozawa.
What's the catch? Here's a list:
- Sleep on the floor, on futons
- Shared bathroom facilities
- Noisy, due to thin walls
- Gas heating can be unreliable - occasionally needs to be re-started
- Meals are Japanese style
- Cash only

It was a very different experience for our family; laying out our bedding in the evening; sleeping together on the futons; then putting everything away in the morning. It's something I grew up doing, in Korea; and now my wife and children have shared this experience.
The bathing is a like a mini-onsen. Wash at the wall, with the shower and soap; then soak in the tub. For Westerners, modesty may be an issue; but here in Asia, this is how we do it. (male and female baths are segregated, of course)
The noise can be an issue, as people moving about causes "banging" sounds; but once everyone has settled down, sleep won't be disturbed.
You're in Japan, so you're not here for McDonald's. The dinners are well created, with a different set menu every night. Highly recommend you stay in for the dinners at the lodge. Indulge your Western tastes during the day - MOS Burger at the Hikage gondola does a good cheeseburger. Enjoy excellent home-cooked Japanese cuisine at the end of the day. Also, consider how much money you'll save by eating-in!

The location is excellent for access to the ski resort. Literally a 5 minute walk up the hill, gets you to the Nagasaka gondola.

The owner of the lodge is incredibly obliging, hard-working, and will look after you. His English is not great, but he gives you a "Point-and-speak" guide on arrival. He used his car to take our three children, plus our 4 huge suitcases up the hill to the lodge.

If you read anything on the above list that is definitely undesirable, then this lodge is not for you. However, if you're willing to try something a little different, and looking for value - in more ways than money - then this lodge will deliver.

We are a family of five - three kids, 10, 8, 6.
