We had such a great time staying at the Bamboo-Hill Sasaokado! The service is excellent & the Western style breakfast delicious. We loved the location as it's only a short stroll from the main gondola and from center of village when going out for dinner at night! What we enjoyed the most though was the warmth and the amazing hospitality from the family owning the hotel! Can highly recommend this place and we will most definitely return again! 

I went for 6 days skiing with my son in a traditional Japanese Ryokan. It surpassed all our expectations with amazing powder snow conditions and friendly helpful staff . They helped with great ski hire and tickets at a discount , explanation of traditional Japanese food and traditions . We experienced the annual fire festival which was entertaining to say the least . It has to be seen to be believed. The location is perfect to the skiing and Main Street for shops and restaurants. We left our ski gear at the hire place near the main gondola and could easily walk there daily . All in all a hoot , would definitely recommend it . You have to be prepared to give things a go .

Lovely little family run Inn. The family speaks a little english and are very helpful. We stayed for 6 nights in three person room. Shared Onsen (open 3.30-10pm) and bathroom facilities which are clean and adequate. Breakfast included which is accompanied by a cute announcement at 8am each morning. I wasn't keen on the morning fish sidedish but had eggs, toast and rice etc instead. Drying room available for your ski gear and hotel is close to the main part of town for dinner Onsen etc. Easy walk to Nagasaka for the main gondola up the mountain. Or can catch the free snow mobile shuttle with your gear from Nagasaka to Hiakage for ski school half way gondola etc. Hotel offers discounted ski rental at Nagasaka (also can leave rental gear at shop) and offers discounted ski passes which you purchased through the hotel. Its a late start in Nozawa Onsen with chairlifts open from 840am-440pm. Would recommend and stay again. 

Had a pleasant stay at Bamboo Hill. It’s very well located - 5 mins walk uphill to the Gondola and 5 mins walk downhill to the village area and main food options. Very walkable from Chuo terminal. Rooms were spacious and breakfast delicious. As a simple no frills homestay it’s great. Expect to use communal bathroom & toilets as ensuite options are extremely limited.

Whilst initially it  appeared there would be challenges given that virtually no English was spoken and this was very much a traditional Ryokan in its operation, it turned out to be a very pleasant stay for two senior Aussies who spend most of their time pursuing activities that many people half our age consider too rigorous, skiing being just one of them.
Clean, hospitable, lovely breakfasts and when we decided to have the "Full Ryokan Experience" and asking for a Kaiseki dinner, not only was it fabulous but the price half that for an ordinary dinner elsewhere.
It was a short uphill walk to the Gondola station but on the staff at Bamboo Hill's recommendation we hired our skis from the adjacent hire shop which provided heated facilities for us to store our own boots and the hire skis. So we walk the short distance up and back in comfortable footware. Bamboo also arranged discounted ski lift tickets!
There was a downside, no in room facilities that i am aware of. Shared facilities meant no showers except in the Onsen, which was only open from 3pm until 9:30pm.
"When in Japan do as the Japanese do!"

The property is equidistant from the main street and the ski lift.  Rooms are small but comfortable however amenities are shared.  Hosts are very friendly with limited English but go out of their way to respond to any queries via a call to a translator.  Their eat in option provides excellent food and great value.  A ski hire on the slopes provides drying facilities so you can leave your skis and boots and walk up and back  in normal shoes.
