Oyado Uemasa

Stayed here for 3 nights during January. While the Japanese style rooms rooms with tatami can be unusual to those used to western style, they are a cool new experience and best of all were the hosts who made the stay extremely inviting and comfortable. They offered extensive help with everything we could possibly need, were extremely friendly,  and even left little gifts in our room. The only downside is a single shower for all 4 rooms but it was always very clean. Location is very walkable to slopes and rest of town with a bus service to slopes very accessible as well. Would highly recommended to anyone staying in nozawa Onsen, especially for the price.

We booked this place in hope for some early snow fall which didn’t happen but our disappointment was short lived when we were welcomed by our host. We have been traveling around the world for 3 months now and the hospitality we received here is going to be hard to beat! Rooms are perfect for the Japanese style and everything you need . 

Recently stayed over Christmas in a 5 person room. It was a fantastic stay, very close to everything and easy to get to the ski slopes. The rooms are traditional Japanese style, super clean and offer comfortable futons to sleep on. There is complimentary tea and coffee, as well as a vending machine on the ground floor for beers and other drinks. 

In terms of facilities, each floor has shared toilet and sink area, though from our experience it is unlikely you will see the other people on your floor (there were only 2 rooms per floor, 4 floors in total). Strong wifi signal on all floors, offered free of charge. The only minor gripe is that there is a single shower room on the first floor for all guests, so you may need to wait for a shower during peak times (morning / evening after skiing). Though during our 5 night stay we only had to wait once to use it, so it’s not really an issue. Also factor in that the rooms don’t have a fridge. 

The ryokan is also only a short walk to a free public Onsen and only a 1 minute walk to bus stop #38 (Shinden) allowing ease of access from the Nozawa Onsen Liner (bus from Iiyama station). Only a 5 minute walk to the Main Street in town for groceries or food.

There is a dry room for hanging wet clothing and storage of ski gear, and you can pay for the stay either in JPY or via credit / debit card.

The defining feature of our stay were our wonderful hosts. The couple who run the ryokan are super helpful and very kind, offering assistance and recommendations. They really made it feel like home and made us all feel welcome.

Would highly recommend staying here if you’re simply after skiing and a comfortable place to stay without breaking the budget!

What a great place to stay in Nozawa. The lodge is run by a family and they are so very helpful. They normally serve a western breakfast but we asked if we could have the traditional Japanese breakfast which they were more than happy to do. Our room had futon beds on the floor with a mountain view. I'd stay again if we went back to Nozawa. Sad to leave

This was our 2nd trip to Nozawa Onsen and we decided to stay at a traditional Japanese lodge instead.  

Oyado Uemasa is family run, with the wife and son doing much of the management of the lodge.  The son speaks a little English.  

Despite the language barrier, with a little sign language, translation software and phrase book we and the two friends we traveled with got by fine.

Location:
Uemasa is located less than 50m on the main road from one of the main the bus stops (and a easy walk).  The buses from Nagano, Togarinozawaonsen Station, and the ski resort village shuttle all stop here.   This was useful as it meant no climbing up or down the hill to get to the accommodation, especially on check-in / check-out with luggage (by hill, I do mean steep).  Accessing the ski slopes was also relatively easy and painless (not as good as ski-in, ski-out, but that is not why one goes to Nozawa Onsen).

Around the corner about 30sec walk away is the local coin laundry.  The machines are washer-dryers and self dispense detergent ... so all one needs is a few coins to get some clean cloths.  

There are two nearby Onsens, both easily accessible and involve less than 2-3 min walk.

Being on the main road, Uemasa is a little further away from the centre of the village.  It is approximately a 
- 3 min walk to the information centre (recommend as a first stop.  Some of the staff speak limited English; can also purchase bus tickets to Nagano or nearby resorts from them - we purchased our tickets to Madarao from the centre)
- 5 min walk to the shops
- 2 min walk to the crepe shop
- 15 min walk to the path leading up to the moving walkway that goes up to the Hikage area.

Food:
Uemasa offers traditional Japaneses breakfasts and dinner options. We elected not to have meals at Uemasa as we were not fans of Japaneses breakfasts and there were plenty of places to dine out in Nozawa.  Grab a map from the information centre and explore the town.

For one of the nights, our hosts kindly helped us organise a shabu shabu dinner at one of the local restaurants.

Facilities:
Drying - the lodge has a small work bench and dry room.  The dry room was sufficiently warm to ensure we had dry jackets, gloves and boots each morning
Bathing - the lodge has a small bath on the ground floor.  Whilst it is a shared bath, it is a "one person use at a time", with a lockable door.
Toilets - there were toilets on each of the accommodation floors.  Washing basins are located in the hallway / public area.

Wifi:
Free and we had reasonable reception.  It did drop out occasionally while we were in the room and we had to reconnect by walking out into the hallway.

Bedding:
Futons.  But the futons were a little thin for my liking (70kg male).  Pillows were buckwheat filled pillows.  The quilts and blankets were warm.

On a side note, Uemasa is the first Japanese lodge we stayed in where the guests had to make their own bedding.

Note:
Most accommodation in Nozawa Onsen involves walking up and down stairs, which could be rather difficult after a on day on the slopes.
