This place is fantastic value backpacker accommodation.  It's 5,500 yen (equal to about AU$57 at today's exchange rates) per night including home-cooked breakfast and dinner, and the meals are delicious, especially dinner!  Dinners are western-style and breakfasts are Japanese-style.  The menu varies daily.  On days when you want to eat out, just let them know a day or so in advance, and they will reduce your accommodation price accordingly.

The location is great too - it's just 5 min or so on foot from the Yubokumin to the bottom chairlift of Hirafu ski resort, or if you don't feel like walking, catch the village shuttle bus from the bus stop which is a minute or so on foot from the Yubokumin.  A zillion Hirafu village bars, shops, and restaurants are within a stone's throw of the Yubokumin, and there are great onsens (hot springs) within a 5-10 min walk too.

The owners, Kuni-san and Michiko-san (a husband and wife team) are very friendly and well-traveled, and they speak English.  If you require, they can provide all sorts of information and tips for your ski (or rafting/mountain-climbing, in summer?) trip.  Kuni-san and his two sons (who are top-level Japanese mogul skiers) also offer great value private ski lessons, when they can fit them into their schedule. 

Many of the people who stay here are friendly solo travelers, meaning it's a comfortable place to stay as a solo traveler.  And in my experience, the people who stay here are generally very considerate - I would say more so than in many other backpacker-style establishments, where I have found it's not uncommon to be woken up by guests who start talking loudly or switch on main lights in the bedroom late at night or early in the morning even though other people are asleep. 

The Yubokumin building itself is really charming inside and out (it is nothing like the picture  currently provided, which for some reason is of a concrete condominium).  There is a nice common room upstairs where everyone dines and gathers after dinner/onsen for a chat and drink (if they like).  The bedrooms are pretty basic, but are decorated with taste.  Beds are Japanese-style bunk beds, and a bit of agility is needed to get into the ones on the upper level, although this should be no problem for anyone who is agile enough to ski/snowboard.  

Concerning complaints in one of the Japanese reviews that the room was too cold and the owner came into the room when they were out - well, each room has an adjustable heater, so if the room's cold that's easily fixed - just turn up the heater (since it's shared backpacker-style accommodation it would be polite to get consensus from the others in your room though).  And the building is not the newest in town, but the owners are particular about cleanliness, so naturally they go into the rooms each day - to clean them:)

In peak season especially January, it is hardly to find a valuable accommodation to stay in Hirafu. It is a large amount if you want to stay there for a few days for skiing. We luckily got this place. Very simple but cozy! Don't expect too much modern facilities, but they provide all you need basically. Owner made some rules and wish guest can follow for example 12am close lobby light, after 11pm can't use shower and hairdryer......I think it is good because make hostel more organized and guests who still willing to come are all nice and easy going. At least I met all good person during my stay. Location is ok, 10-15 minutes from welcome center by feet but if you take luggage walking in snowing day, it become harder and take more minutes. It is convenient for ski since there is ski shuttle bus just nearby hostel.

Charming, delicious ski holiday on a shoe-string!

reasonable choice in Hiraful ski area

I had booked 8 nights here.

The toilet is a squat hole in the ground (which i have used alot in the past but its no good for a ski holiday where muscles are already sore). This toilet always stinks of sewage waste.

The japanese style roll out bed has several layers (which is fine) but when making the bed i found at least 3 random hairs on different parts. The blankets are clearly dirty. The matress and duvet also pretty dirty with crumbs / fluff from other guests etc

No kitchen for guests and the guy wont let you heat up anything or use his microwave

No boot / jacket / board drying room. Owner freaks out if anyone dare keep boots in the dorm to dry.

Common area is very basic with limited seating

The bunks are very difficult to climb into. Half ladders on walls and high wooden sides to get over

No lockers

Owner also would climb across my bed to fix the curtain tie each day (even if id opened it)

Owner is very anal and shows me cups... Several of which must not be used for tea only for tea with dinner.

I arrived in the morning as i had gotten a ride from another traveller.

When arriving owner gives to welcome and tells me rudely i cant come now i should go away and come after 3. I explain... I just need to leave my bags, i dont need a room now. He doesnt like this and says no no no. Then finally agrees to let me leave bags in an open shelter on the road (very easy for passers by to steal from). He wont even take my small laptop bag with valuables into his office and tells me he will charge me money to do do. Eventually he reluctantly takes the laptop bag and tells me to go away until the afternoon. 

The owner is by far the rudest strangest japanese person i have met (they are usually awesome). 

The only good thing about this place is location near to hirafu center. I think the owner is banking on that to get guests.

I would highly recommend avoiding this place if youd like a comfortable stay. I moved after 3 days being in one of the worst hostels ive found worldwide bavk to hooting owl in niseko village area
