The room was quite large, a little worn out. There was a (tea, coffee?) stain on the AC remote and some stains on the onsen clothes in the closet (probably food stains from a previous visitor). No bath in the room, only toilet and a sink. Wifi only in the lobby, not in the rooms. Electric water-heater in the room. Onsen was ok. No English spoken, the man at the reception used a voice translation app on his tablet. Light sulphur smell in the chilly corridors. Breakfast very Japanese, only trays with compartments to eat from, sticks and spoons, tofu, green salad, corn soup, miso soup etc. Sausages, coffee and toast, too. Some nice mountain trails for tough climbers and ramblers nearby.

A quiet place for a frugal traveler

Excellent location. a quiet beautiful place. Room is big with good onsen. but the fridge inside the room is very dirty. Big towel rental Yen 50 each, and you have to pay extra 150Yen per person per night apart from the room rate. The included breakfast and dinner is ok, however the timing could be better. Breakfast 0810 start and Dinner 5:30pm start... it's really can't fit our time as we spend whole day for hiking.. more flexible timing would be great

Nice onsen hotel in peaceful place

Hotel is in a quiet beautiful location across the street from a lake, bus stop right in front of hotel property. The front desk speaks very limited English. This hotel is very popular for retired Japanese during summer time, room with tatami flooring and futon bedding, room rate including the buffet dinner and breakfast with basic Japanese food. All rooms have balcony with lake view but the balcony is connected with all other rooms on the same floor so we always locked the sliding door. Wi-Fi is free but only work in hotel lobby. My advise is stay away from this hotel if you don't get used to Japanese tradition, bathroom have only a toilet an a sink so if you don't like to take a bath in public with the rest of the hotel guess then this will be a huge problem also the whole hotel area smells strong Sulphur but some people come to this place because they like the smell and there's no other restaurant nearby if you don't like their basic Japanese food for the retired people. Hotel is old and food is basic but I have no complain because the room rate is cheap compare with the others. Nikko is a beautiful place to explore, we spent 3 days there and trekked many trails.

Old traditional Japanese Hotel

Only go to this hotel if you can stand smelling sulphur all day, as it's quite close to the source of the hot spring (just a 5-minute walk, it's quite interesting to see the source!) and the hotel's onsen baths use the sulphur-rich water of this hot spring. So all you smell, all day long, is rotten eggs. 

When we arrived (my husband and I, and two of our friends) we noticed the rooms were quite dirty. The rooms were traditional-looking (tatami mats and futons) but there was also a small area with a western table and two chairs for normal sitting, which is always good. The balcony window covers almost the entire room, which gives you a great view of the surrounding mountains. The sliding doors can be opened, because there's another insect door behind them. However, the balcony runs alongside the building, so you can just walk past other people's rooms and look in, which made me paranoidly close the curtains every time I changed my clothes. The room was dusty, though, and I found a hair inside the bath. My friends found several hairs in their bath and had the room cleaned again. My husband (who is Japanese) had to ask the staff to do this, though, as they speak absolutely no English. The hairs were gone after we came back, but the dust was still there. Also the traditional sliding doors with paper on them were completely brown around the handles, from numerous hands throughout the year. I found this all very surprising, as I'm used to very clean hotels in Japan! The sheets on the futons were clean, fortunately. Also we got some clean yukata (cotton kimono) upon arrival, but the obi (belts) that were in the room had food stains on them! There were four happi (overcoats) in our closet and two had food stains on them as well. So they are not washed often. They also had only one size slippers, which didn't fit my friend's tall non-Japanese husband.
The rooms were also quite noisy, you could hear exactly what was going on in the corridor and on the floor above (while we were staying there, some primary schools had taken their students on a school trip and they were staying on the floor above us, resulting in them running around from 5am).

Dinner was buffet-style, which offered a lot of choice, but unfortunately almost everything was cold. You get a tray that's divided into smaller compartments to put your different food items on. It reminded me of a prison, to be honest. Drinks (including beer) were free. Do, however, look closely at the glasses as there were some dirty ones there that not all the stains had been washed off.
Breakfast was similar, with a choice of both Japanese and western food.

The onsen baths were good, just what you'd expect; an indoor bath and an outdoor bath (the outdoor bath was in a beautifully decorated but very dusty garden) and showers. It was very nice to relax in the hot water. 

The hotel also has a small gift shop where you can buy sweets (which is a common souvenir for people to bring for their family and colleagues when they've stayed somewhere) but also keychains and decorational items. The lobby has several vending machines with drinks in them, so you can get drinks 24 hours a day. However, the lobby is also the only place in the hotel where wifi works, so if you want to do some e-mailing, you have to be there. The chairs are lush, but again, covered in food stains.

The environment of the hotel is great; the hot spring source is nearby, you're on the edge of a beautiful lake (where you can rent boats) and there are several hiking courses that start close by. I think this hotel is suitable for people who just want to get out there and do and see things and don't care too much about their accommodation. However, if you come here (like us) to enjoy the onsen baths and relax, it's better to choose a nicer, cleaner hotel.

Dirty hotel with non-English speaking staff

There aren't many reviews in English for this hotel and we sort of knew this hotel isn't great - we picked it only for its location because we wanted to have an early morning hiking Oku-Nikko (Lake Chuzenji, Ryuzu Falls, Yudaki Falls, Yunoko Lake, Senjogahara Plateau, Kegon Falls - it's beautiful) and didn't find any other choice. While the man at the front desk was very nice and the vending machines and shop at the lobby are surprisingly handy and have a lot of difference drinks and snacks - that's about it. The room was extremely old, dirty and neglected. There were stains everywhere and the truth is this hotel is in real need of renovations. I cannot understand how this hotel is still open - all the other hotels we've been to during our three weeks trip to Japan have been clean and much more pleasant.

The Dirtiest Hotel I've Ever Been To

No buses up to the hotel after 5pm so if the train is delayed from Tokyo you cannot reach the hotel at all! The staff doesn't speak any English at all and they kept changing our dinner time to attend the buffet. Several times!!! The rooms are pore and you are not entitled to anything! Do not stay here. It was a nightmare!!! No shooed or convenient store, so be prepared to starve.
