We (a group of 4) checked into Banana Shout and were immediately greeted by Barbara- the sweetest lady who gave us the best recommendations on where to eat as well as leisure. The place itself is well maintained and very clean, and offers views of the ocean that compares to something you’d see only in pictures! In addition, the wide variety of plants and gates offered a feeling of security while making us feel like we were in the middle of the jungle. The house itself was beautiful and offered a comfortable place to sleep, appliances to suit our needs, as well as a balcony to relax throughout the day. Big shout out to Plug, who was there almost every second of the day making sure we were okay. He even assisted in finding us transportation back to the airport for a very reasonable price. Thank you Barbara, thank you Plug, and thank you Milo for making our very first experience in Jamaica one to remember! :)

Surreal Experience at Banana Shout

Us 2 sisters have been coming to Negril very frequent for years now and we love the West End. Our first stay here. We had always wanted to try a stay here. Banana Shout was exactly what we love on the cliff ocean side. Rustic old school vybe! This place reminded us of our original favorite place a few doors down at Citronella, but that place has changed from what it was. We love rustic Jamaican style and Banana Shout is all that. Alex greeted us with a warm welcome and the Dolphin Sea was all ready for us. I loved the huge bathroom and shower. Rooms have ceiling fan and another stand fan and we only used one fan. We don't care about AC! The ocean breeze cools the room in the evening. We met Plug who is the caretaker with very friendly vybe. Always greeting with a smile. Alex and Plug checked in on us every day to make sure we were all good and happy with our stay and we were! There is a communal kitchen on property where you can cook if you like. Room also had a 2 burner stove and small fridge. Now the best part is the cliff access! Stairs directly into the ocean is a must for me! I prefer cliff swimming over the beaches any time! You get the best sunsets right here on property. The sound of the ocean waves hitting the rocks while you drift asleep and the peacefulness of that sound in the morning is priceless. Rick's is next door so you can enjoy the music without leaving. Wise Choice right across the street if you need something from the store. Kool Vybes , LTU, and many other places to eat/drink very close by. The only bad thing I have to say is not long enough of a stay! 5 days not enough! 😄 I have some unforgettable memories here now and this will forever be a special place for me. Have stayed at many in Negril. We loved Banana Shout!

I had to cancel my Nov 20 booking due to the virus.  I was concerned as I had paid for my room but Banana Shout Resort didnt haggle, argue or dispute my decision to cancel.  They were very helpful and very quick to return my money.  They were more courteous than some of the westernised airlines which are richer and have more government support.  I will be booking this trip again and I will definitely be going to Banana Shout Resort.  See you 2022.

Wish I was there

Ever come home from a trip saying you need a vacation from your vacation?  I sure have, calling our first visit to Paris the “We’ll Sleep When We’re Dead” tour.  I was determined to come home from ten days in Jamaica feeling rested and relaxed.

After booking seven nights at two different All-Inclusives on the north shore I added three nights in Negril to end our trip.  Picking Banana Shout was easy – I’d stayed there 25 years ago and have been dreaming about returning since the day I left.  Since all I wanted was a place to sleep and hang out for a couple of days this was the perfect choice.

Banana Shout is not for everyone, and hopefully this review will help sort out those who would be unhappy from those who will think it is heaven.  If you want air conditioning and TVs and room service and need resort activities to keep you occupied – this is not the place for you.  Go to Sandals or Tensing Pen or somewhere else – you’ll pay more but you’ll be happier there.

Do you like a laid back atmosphere, where everything may not be perfect but that’s ok, the bed is comfortable, the view is fantastic and the price is right?  Do you just want to relax, can you provide your own entertainment, and is just being there enough for you?  If yes to those questions, give Banana Shout a shot.

It is rustic.  It is natural.  It is more like being at a state park cabin than a resort, with clean sheets, flush toilets, hot running water and a location to die for.  It has an incomparable view that after a day or two you begin to take for granted; sitting in my office a week later writing this, thinking of being there, is torture.

There are four units, two cottages ocean front and two further back in the gardens.  All have screens and wooden louvers on the windows that you can adjust to allow more breeze or less light, and a ceiling fan.  While it got warm for a while in the afternoon it was cool at night and we had no issues sleeping without a/c.  Each unit has a private bath and kitchenette area with a sink and a small refrigerator.  

In between the two ocean front units is an open air bar/kitchen with pots, plates, glasses and a few small appliances.  Each morning I made coffee there, and in the afternoons used a blender to whip up batches of frozen rummy drinks, bringing all the ingredients with us and washing our dishes afterwards.  There is a large table with some benches and chairs and we sat here for hours, in the shade during the day and under cover one night when it rained.

Banana Shout sits between Rick’s Café and Catcha Falling Star on the West End Road.  The afternoon parade of catamarans and glass bottom boats going to Rick’s is free entertainment.  There is a band at Rick’s most afternoons, from about 5 to 7 or so, but the music is unobtrusive. 

We ate dinner at Ivan’s inside Catcha one night, and at LTU just past Rick’s another.  For lunch we tried Cool Vybes past Catcha one afternoon and Mango Tree, a mostly local hangout at Tbird, directly across from the entrance to Rick’s another.  There is a small store nearby where we bought local breads and cakes for breakfast in the mornings, preferring to stay in.
 
The property is secure, with a tall fence along the West End Road just like every other cliff top property.  The gate is locked and there is always someone present for security; whether Plug the grounds man, Chemis the night watchman or Milo the owner.  Plug and Chemis are fascinating to talk with, and would sometimes hang out with us when we were sitting at the table near the bar/kitchen, and when we sat on the porch of our cabin they left us alone.   

Banana Shout is a cliff top property, so you have private, direct access to the ocean.  Your choice is pretty much limited to jumping off one of the two flat platforms into the deep, clear water.  Unfortunately when we were there we could have gotten in the water but not out as the ladder had broken and was off for repair.  Rick’s next door has a pool and we considered walking over for a dip one afternoon – there is no cover to get in Rick’s – but instead mixed up another batch of drinks and forgot about it.

We went to Banana Shout, not to use it as a base for exploration but as a place to sit, sleep, rest, hang out and do nothing.  In that we were wildly successful.  We took a Bluetooth speaker and played tunes off our phone, read books, drank, and left the property only for meals.  For our purposes it was the ideal choice.

Because forewarned is forearmed, a few advisories.  We had no issue with them, but there are two dogs on the property, partly for security.  They are friendly, sometimes too friendly and occasionally had to be, um, encouraged to not sit on our feet when we were sitting around the big table.  

Banana Shout is beautiful but natural.  The landscaping away from the clifftop is thick, not quite jungle but close, and there are some lovely paths winding through the foliage, much of it blooming.  There are some bugs crawling around, and if the sight of a single bug freaks you out, well, they are needed to pollinate the blooms, are a necessary element of the environment, and yes, they are there.  A few were in our cabin as well.  

I love Banana Shout for what it is, a throwback to what Jamaica and particularly Negril was like in the not too distant past.  Mark Conklin built Banana Shout in the 70’s and twenty years ago he wrote a book with the same title.  I found a copy on Amazon, took it with me and read it while we were there.  It was the perfect complement to an almost perfect visit.

Where to vacation from your vacation

very rustic place but right on the cliffs . very cool little spot away from the crowds for sure. great cove to swim and explore . VERY ,  VERY Close to Ricks . Can walk there in 1 minute .  Just a nice spot to relax with a 60's vibe ..

RUSTIC Spot

Nestled towards the top of the Negril cliffs right next to legendary Ricks Cafe, Banana Shout is a fantastic little boutique hotel set right on the sea.

A lovely dog greets you at the gate, and owner Milo Gallico is the host. A curly-haired expat from Italy, Gallico did a good job making sure every guest is happy.

My cottage saw the waves breaking just beneath me and included a full kitchen, king bed and oversized patio.

Plug is Gallico's right hand man, and Flo Sharty helps, too.

There is an official marijuana dispensary on site with USA-quality pot -- uncommon in Jamaica.

There is a little shop for drinks and stuff. You can pay later. Pretty kick-back place considering there are only four units.

Catcha Falling Star next door has a great restaurant, plus there is a good jerk hut just outside the gate, too.

Great place. Can't wait to return

What a little piece of paradise this place is!  I was lucky enough to stay in one of the 2 oceanfront cabins. The spectacular setting, friendliness and tranquility I experienced at Banana Shout are still on my mind. I should start by saying if you're looking for plush, polished, spas and having every need tended to, you may want to consider other options on the cliffs. But if a few minor imperfections are ok you won't find a more beautiful setting and comfortable lodging for the price. And the small staff are fantastic. It's not upscale but the grounds are meticulously maintained and absolutely gorgeous. The rooms are clean, comfortable, colorful and tastefully decorated. Views...world class. Steps and terraces built into cliffs for swimming and diving access. Snorkeling is exceptional. Fridge and kitchenette were a great plus. Location is great with Rick's, Ivans, LTU and other small bars and eateries in walking distance (Kool Vybes, Shark, T Bird, etc.).  And special thanks to Patrizia and Plug for their awesome service and kindness. Also to Milo, Chemiste and the other locals who were there to answer every question. I felt like family at Banana Shout and that's the best compliment I can possibly give.

When We think of Banana Shout ... one word comes to mind 🏝Paradise.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 10 day stay in our lil piece of Paradise. 
Dolphin View Cottage is truly a Jamaican experience... waking to the sound of the sea sets your mind for the day.  The sunset views are etched in our memories. Breath taking.
The staff treat you like family. Thanks again Plug. Miss your smiling face and fresh flowers.

The sea is there for Your snorkeling fun or just float in the crystal clear blue sea.

Lil piece of Paradise

I stayed here for 6 nights with my girlfriend in early November and as far as we were concerned, it ticked every box!
This is not a resort for people after a 5* all inclusive, modern resort. This is a small (4 cottages) and very rustic location that probably changed much since it was built, however appears to be maintained to a high standard on a daily basis. We arrived at night and were greeted by “plug”, the groundsman/security at Banana shout. He helped us with our luggage and then escorted us to a local restaurant after our journey. 
The accommodation is basic, however it is clean and pleasant, with a housekeeper present everyday to change sheets, towels if you require them to be. As said above, nothing is fancy however it is all functional. 
The key elements to Banana shout are it’s location within Negril and it’s friendly and helpful staff. Patricia who works in the office couldn’t do more for us if she tried, giving advice on the area in terms of what to do and where to eat, and arranging drivers for us for excursions and transfers to the airport, nothing was too much trouble. The owner, Milo was also present on a daily basis and was always more than happy to spend time speaking with guests.
Within 50yds from the rear of our treehouse property, was the cliff side that had ladders down into the ocean, making swimming and snorkelling easy and enjoyable. There are plenty of sun beds close by should you wish to sun bathe. There is also a communal area at Banana Shout with pots and pans etc that can be used to cook your own food should you wish. One evening we expressed our interest in having a bbq, which plug facilitated without any issues whatsoever by providing a bbq and fuel for it.
The resort is right next to Ricks cafe and within a 5 minute taxi ride of great restaurants such as Murphys, ericas, rockhouse, push cart and 100yds away from Ivan’s restaurant. It is only a 10 minute taxi ride away from 7 mile beach so in terms of location it is excellent.
Overall we really enjoyed staying at Banana shout and I would definitely recommend it to people who wish to explore a destination rather than stay in a large, enclosed, 5* resort. It’s a great place that is managed and maintained by a great team of people!

Me and my boyfriend stayed in Banana Shout for a week...the location is AMAZING!!!
We had the seafront room with the best view of the Caribbean Sea and the most beatiful  sunset (the place is just nearby the famous Rick’s Café...)
The staff was very friendly....the manager Patricia attended to every request and was really helpful with suggestion of good restaurant and places to go.
A common area with a patio and a nice open air kitchen is available...we had also a beautiful barbecue there!
A special mention for Plug, who maintain the property. He was really friendly and always  very helpful!
We definetley reccomend this place!
