KTDC Periyar House Thekkady

Located inside the Periyar tiger reserve about 800m away from the boat landing area. People booking here get confirmed boating seats (we did not utilise it though!). Property is owned by Kerala tourism dept (Govt). It is the only affordable property inside the reserve for budget travelers. However, it is very well maintained. Very clean room, bed sheets, pillow cases and soft comfy towels. Bed and pillows comfortable. Room is spacious with windows overlooking the forest. Beware of monkeys though! Only the central section of the window has close protective grill to prevent monkeys from getting inside the room and that alone can be left open! Left and right sections' grills have gaps through which small monkeys can enter! We had closed the curtains but still small monkeys reached out through the gaps in the grill to move aside the curtains and peek inside! Electric water heater provides 24 hour hot water supply. Electric kettle is provided along with tea/coffee sachets. Front desk people are cordial, friendly and helpful. Children's play equipment, swings hammocks, benches are there in the front lawn. Complimentary breakfast was provided. Restaurant people are courteous and provide quick service. Food was decent. Veg options available. We saw two porcupines in the evening. You are not supposed to venture out of the property between 6 pm and 6.30am. It is a very nice stay option inside a reserve forest.
