I loved the energy, the style and everything in this hostel. There are many chilling balconies around, a fully equipped spacious kitchen, and a lovely garden.
The location is just outside the center, but on a walking distance from the bus station.
Tips: Rent a bike and go for a long ride, the hostel staff will give you all information for the tours you can get.

was drawn in the by the really cheap price. had a shared kitchen which was nice. about a 20 min walk from downtown, which is ok, but meant we ended up taking taxis back and forth more than i would have wanted (just far enough to be annoying to always make the walk). walls are just boards however, so not so sound proof. that said, guests were pretty respectful while we were there, not a party hostel per se, but nice common areas to make friends if you want.  nice green feeling and views of the surrounding hills.

Our host, Manuel was great.  He went out of his way to help us when my daughter was sick, driving us to appointments and acting as out interpreter.  Very much appreciated.  
The place is comfortable enough.  Everything was clean and the place is on a side street that is quiet.  The sound of the river below can help put one to sleep.

Beautiful hostel outside of busy center of Banos

backpackers hostel, hard to be beat the price, outside of town about 15-20 minutes

Comfortable Hostal

If funky is your thing then go for it. We stayed in the upstairs cottage and it was fine. There was hottish water, a good view of the river and a nice, gentle slope to the floor. It is pretty far from anything else you would want to see or do in Banos. If you plan on biking and value your life, DO NOT rent bikes here.

It's funky for sure

Truthfully, my assumption is that the owner falls somewhere on the bipolar spectrum. Everything seems to be done on a spontaneous whim.  Super kind and nice sometimes, standoffish, distracted and not present in the next moment.  

You can book excursions thru the hostel, which is convenient...but The volunteer there had little or no information on the excursions you could book there.  The info she did possess was minimal and lacked any level of genuine interest...she couldn't sell food to a starving man.  

It's a prety far walk out of town. Which is good and bad.  It's quiet and secluded but it's so far from everything. The beds were comfortable but I found equally comfortable beds for a cheaper price in town.  If you're willing to spend an extra dollar per night you can find private accommodation in town.  

Small qualm, but no towels or soap provided either...Which means nothing to a traveler but when every other accommodation know checked does offer that, for the same or cheaper, it's a decent additional perk

The major selling point for this place is the social exposure.  It comes up first on booking.com because it has the cheapest dorm so many backpackers book it. Banos is very social tho so meeting people is easy here.

I would not stay here again.
