Roxys Mountain Lodge

If you want to do the famous Boiling Lake hike or go see the Boeri Lake, Freshwater Lake and Middleham Falls - stay at Roxy’s Mountain Lodge in the village of Laudat. This unique and charming lodge is a MUST since it gives you an idea of how things probably should be - and used to be. Just try and you will see ... what I mean. My husband and I stayed for 5 days and enjoyed it very much: Large clean room, bathroom with hot shower (in the afternoon), large clean kitchen (there is no shop in Laudat, so if you want to cook, please make sure to bring whatever you think you need), Manou and his loving care, stunning location in the mountains (there is simply no accommodation like Roxy’s and no place closer to the main trailheads nowhere on the island). Roxy's owner Manou is a truly nice person and the best cook ever: Soup, main course, and ice cream for dinner, packed lunches for our hikes, and a special crab/crayfish meal on Valentine’s day! (Breakfast is available also but we prepared our own.) We would like to highly recommend Roxy’s Mountain Lodge! And if in Laudat, please do not forget to look for “Middle East” and drop by Tuksy’s Bar for a Kubuli!

This hotel is in a great position for hiking, with several trails available without transport. Our room was very pleasant with a balcony that commanded a good view. The en-suite facilities were a little cramped and not particularly well fitted - everything worked, but was not easy to use. On the other hand the food was excellent, with a buffet evening meal a high point- well cooked, wholesome, plentiful and delicious- just the thing after a day in the hills - and very reasonably priced.

Great meals

Stayed here for 2 nights, It is a good base for walking in Dominica's central mountains.
We had a B & B deal but were obliged to also have dinner there. The breakfast was pretty ordinary and the dinner overpriced for what was provided

Isolated Family run hotel

First of all, I will start by saying that this is by no means in Roseau, as the listing suggests. If you were looking for accommodation in Roseau I think you would be surprised to find yourself a long way from town. The location is the tiny village of Laudat, a wonderfully peaceful place with views over the lush, rainforest-covered hills. Roxy's is ideally situated for hikers, with easy access to the Boiling Lake trail, the rainforest walks to Middleham Falls and the Stinkhole and Titou Gorge. 
I liked a lot about this place, it has a certain rural charm and the owners are friendly and accommodating. But I will say that it is rustic and a little bit rough around the edges. 
The room which we stayed in (No 6) was quite cosy with comfy beds with mosquito netting and warm duvets, which are needed as it is not often warm up in Laudat. Those were the good bits. The lock on our door did not work, so every day was an agony of "Am I asking for it leaving expensive camera lenses kicking about?" As it happens, security-wise we were fine, but a locking door should be a basic requirement for a hotel room. The bathroom was clean but felt a bit grubby as whoever did the tiling did not wipe down, so the tiles were smudged with brownish streaks of grout. The single light fitting in the bedroom was rather erratic and required a special knack to get it to work. Doors look like they were hung by a very amateur DIYer and the dingy covered balcony has a very depressing feel to it, but on the plus side it is a good place to keep your muddy boots, waterproofs etc. 
All of these things I was willing to overlook, and enjoy a cosy rustic base for hiking. My big grumble about Roxy's though is the lack of hot water. Both times I took a shower I barely got enough hot to wash my hair (a minute's worth, two at the most) and when you've been out walking in the rain, or swimming in cold mountain water at Titou Gorge, what you really need is a good hot shower. But that said, I understand that energy prices are very, very high in Dominica so it's hard to blame the owners for not bankrupting themselves by heating water at all hours.
Evening meals at Roxy's were really good, with a nice variety of local cuisine and we had a salad one lunchtime which was lovely. Breakfasts could be a bit more exciting, there's fresh fruit and toast, but anything else you have to pay for.
In summary, if you want a cosy, rustic base for some good hiking, and don't mind that it's a little haphazard, stay here. If you like life's luxuries, this isn't the place for you.

Rustic charm, with an emphasis on 'rustic'

This family run B&B is ideally located for local walks and the trek to boiling lake.
The rooms are variable, some of them in need of lot of attention, others were well presented.  The beds were quite small in the double rooms.

Some of the staff, particularly Maria, were very friendly and helpful. All the kitchen staff were keen to help.    One morning someone was noisily clearing away the plates at 4:30am!
Freddie runs a taxi company, but at times did not seem to be customer focussed. Promises were made that he couldn't keep, by agreeing to take some of the group out at 2pm, however did not arrive until after 3.15pm, taking others on a "day" trip! 

The food prepared by Maria and her colleagues was tasty and varied. Sandwiches are available at lunchtime, slightly different take on an egg sandwich (cold fried egg in the sandwich) or cheese sandwich (melted cheese on bread with salad) seems to work really well. Unfortunately they ran out of Tuna the day before, which was not replaced in time for the next lunch.

B&B is in the village, in a very quiet location with very pleasant garden and communal dining area and veranda /seating area. There are friendly dogs around outside, and a pleasant garden/veranda area for sitting after relaxing after a long days walking.
