The place is beautiful and very calm. Room was comfortable and clean. Our host Sara was very attentive (organized packed breakfast really early for us, helped with taxis and advised about where to buy certain things we needed)
Near by Shuhe old town was extremely uninteresting for us (ridiculously preserved only shops and tourists) so we ended up taking taxis to Lijiang old town which is basically the same only larger so more alive (20m/30rmb) or to Baisha old town, which we thought was the nicest (we took the bus). 
To organize tours we used an agency in Lijiang. 
In sum - a very good stay if you’re looking for a quiet place away of the hustle of Lijiang 

Very good stay

We stayed at the Bruce chalet before and after hiking the Tiger Leaping Gorge, and our visit was outstanding!  Great hospitality and a charming, cozy atmosphere helped us relax after our trip from Beijing.  The staff was friendly and helpful, making us feel right at home from the beginning and helping us make arrangements for getting around the city.  The rooms were clean and well equipped, and we enjoyed sipping coffee or tea in the morning overlooking the garden.  The garden area is lush and beautiful, with plenty of seating to enjoy a peaceful respite. It’s also conveniently located, just a short walk from shops and restaurants.  If I’m ever in Lijiang again I will definitely stay at the Bruce Chalet!!

Relaxing Escape

This is not a 5 star hotel, so if you are looking for that, you are not searching for this location. If you are looking for charming, clean, well-maintained, friendliness, and character, this is the place for you. Although it is not in the Old Town, it is a short walk (10 minutes). The room is really comfortable. I recommend one of the two larger rooms for long period of stay with the private balcony. Sara and her two retrievers are very delightful. 

The reason for only 4 stars and not 5:
* The internet was nearly non-existent. Very poor service.
* The rooms are not very sound proof, especially with loud Chinese visitors.
* Although the weather was great, the evening and mornings were a bit cool. There was no AC or heating units to take the chill out of the room.
* Minor things like a very slow draining system for the shower that eventually floods the bathroom, and the last day when I had to leave at 6 AM, the toilet water no longer filled the tank, just did not make this a 5 star. We did not even get towel exchanges on our last day.

recommendations for the owner:
* replace the shower curtain with a glass shower wall unit to keep water from getting everywhere.
* Invest in AC and heating units for the rooms. Not everyone is used to the Lijiang weather.
* Replace the coffee tables with full tables for people to eat and work on. The current tables are not very functional. 

All that said, it is a marvelous place to stay. All of these things mentioned are very small compared the excellent place. The biggest asset to the property is Sara and here helpfulness. She even was up to see me off at 6 AM when the driver came to take me to the airport. Kudos to Sara.

Ambiance is Wonderful

it was my first time visited Lijiang, the old town was very crowed and noisy. i was lucky that choose this guesthouse. they had beautiful yard and 2 adorable dogs(ruby and xiaohei). the room is very simple and clean, good price within my budget! even the owner maomao was very friendly and helpful. she told me how to have a great tour while i stay, and even made delicious western breakfast! this whole Lijiang experience was behind my expectation, and i definitely be back again and will recommend to my friends.

My first time in Lijiang

This lovely guesthouse is on the outskirts of Shuhe Old Town in Lijiang. It is much nicer and quieter than the central Old Town of Lijiang, and very close to the countryside. The service was really excellent (the staff helped us with many small things) and the accomodation very comfortable. Highly recommended!
