Popped in last week on the off chance four of us could have a meal as we were passing but hadn’t booked. Lovely friendly welcome by the landlady who seated us and got us some menus promptly. We all opted for the pizzas as we’ve had them here previously and know they’re good. We weren’t disappointed. Good size and plenty of topping. We all had a couple of drinks with our pizzas and the bill was very reasonable. Thank you for a pleasant evening. 

Great pizza. Reasonable prices. 

I never leave reviews but was so disappointed by this place. We haven't been for a long time and things have really dropped off. I should have known when I didn't have our booking confirmed that we weren't going to have a good experience. Apparently the phone lines weren't working properly and they weren't getting messages (I booked online on their website, tried calling twice and left a voicemail). How are they even running a business if the phones don't work and they're not getting bookings through from the website?? Needless to say they weren't expecting us but there were plenty of free tables available. 
Straight away we were told of all the dishes that weren't available (apparently ones of the chefs hadn't turned up). So we ordered accordingly only to be told that one of those choices had run out too! 
Service was slow and the food was average at best. We had to ask twice to see the dessert menu and then were told there was only one choice available!! The waitress tried to excuse the slow service because of the large party at the bar and being short staffed. You're a pub and it's a Saturday night, of course you're going to be busy at the bar. And if you're short staffed, why not close down the restaurant part altogether and just focus on the bar. I would've preferred to be turned away because of short staffing than to have had the sub par experience we did. 
This used to be a lovely country pub and restaurant. I don't know what happened but none of our family or friends will be returning or recommending it anymore. 

Disappointing Birthday meal. 

Are here as part of a group of 10. Service was great and the food was prompt eve though we were a large group. Lovely atmosphere in the pub. Seemed like it was a good mixture of regulars and non regulars. Will definitely come back here again. 

Nice atmosphere, good service.

Stayed here for a couple of nights this month as we were visiting Flamingoland with our children for half term.  The location is great as it’s also close to the seaside and not far from York and Beverley.  The rooms are lovely with so much space for families.   Not just your standard family room with a double bed and a pull out bed like most.  The pub was decorated for halloween which the children thought was great.  Charlie was very welcoming and the locals in the pub were super friendly too.  I’d definitely stay here again if we were back in the area.

Called in on the off chance that we could get something to eat and luckily it wasn’t too busy but it was midweek so probably explains that.  We were seated quickly and the table set up for us with menus etc.  I chose the homemade steak pie and it was fantastic.  An individually made square pie, with meat so tender I barely had to chew it, lots of carrots and broccoli and a huge dollop of mash.  The rest of my party enjoyed their meals just as much as I had and can’t fault the service either.  When our glasses were empty, we were quickly offered more drinks.  A very pleasant experience overall.

We visited this pub last time we were in the area and had a great meal, so was very disappointed this time on our visit.
I ordered what was discribed on the menu as a THICK CUT gammon steak, when it arrived it was very thin and of course dried out which was a big let down. The chips were in fairness home made and very nice, just a shame it was such a meagre portion! It came with a huge bowl of peas, when the bowl was taken off the plate it was a third empty!
I would have thought if they want to survive in a small village, they will have to up their game a bit, i'm afraid we ate somewhere else for the other couple of nights we were in the area, last time we were here it was a job to get a table, now we know why this time it was empty!


Disappointing visit.

Group of six, all ordered pizza (except one who had the halloumi burger) and they were great. Lots of choice, plenty of topping and served promptly. Great value for money and a lovely atmosphere. We’ll be back!

Fantastic pizzas

Firstly, the Star Inn was taken over by new owners 3 months ago and they are aware they have several issues to sort out. Our room was bright and spacious however, there are clearly issues with the standards of housekeeping, They will know from this who is writing it but I have no qualms as I am trying to be honest. We found a jacket in the wardrobe when we unpacked, there is the lid from a baby bottle under one of the side tables, and it's probably still there. I could list them all but the owners know it is something they need to address. We only ate their once because we arrived on a Wednesday which is pizza only night, I'm lactose intolerant so after checking in we headed off elsewhere for something I could eat. There will be changes to the online menu to reflect this sort of thing.
The one night we did eat, several items were not available and the steak and ale pie was replaced with steak and kidney, which was nice. As others have mentioned, the lack of veg as advertised was disappointing. All in all, average pub grub if a little pricey for what was served up.
There are 2 main problems, which I am sure are affecting much of the hospitality trade, they are having difficulty getting good experienced staff, and, like the rest of the world, supply chain issues are proving stressful.
One other thing to remember, this is a village pub in a rural setting, there are rural smells and sounds all around, what else would you expect! The funniest thing was walking back to the residents entrance one night to see the turkeys all lined up on the fence, they were perfectly placid and harmless.
Suite 3 at the back is the quieter as 1 & 2 are over the bar so if you want a quiet early night, forget it.
One final point, guys, please do something about the flies in the bar and restaurant, it is quite off putting for those from outside the rural world.
At the end of the day it is a village pub which the locals seem to like and is in a state of transition, if they can get the good staff they want and a reliable supply chain, with a lot of hard work, I am sure all will be fine in the end, at the moment, it only warrants and average rating.

Under new ownership

Booked to come for a meal with some friends not knowing there was going to be live music and what an added bonus that was. Great pizzas, friendly staff and an amazing band. What more can you ask for on a bank holiday weekend? Thanks for a great night!

Didn’t realise pub had changed hands. We went last year and had a great meal so wanted to go again. We were sorely disappointed. Food took OVER AN HOUR to arrive. The food was poor  and not as described on the menu (e.g seasonal veg stated on menu and frozen peas arrive as the only veg??) and definitely not worth the wait. The price is far too high for the quality both of service and food. Avoid.
