We chose the Gateway Inn because it looked inviting, was in the right position for an overnight stop on the way to Scotland, and was pet friendly.  We were very happy to find it had a homely, welcoming atmosphere on arrival with plenty of parking space.  It's located near a large roundabout but is set far enough away from it for that not to have been an issue.  It has its own grounds which were handy for our dog.  We had 2 rooms, both of which were extremely spacious and well furnished.  They each had a different style.  Everything was spotless and the bathroom and shower room were of good sizes with plenty of space to put ones own toiletries.  The beds were super comfortable.  We had a great evening meal and breakfast was continental style and plentiful.  Many thanks to the welcoming, efficient staff.   We would definitely stay here again. 

A great find, especially if you're travelling with a pet.

Last minute decision to stop over in Kendal on our way to a wedding in Scotland and to break the journey. Lovely country hotel in beautifully kept surroundings. Bedroom was big and warm and the cosiest bed ever . Great wine list and reasonably priced food menu - about 12-26. Monkfish was tasty and a real treat . Just a pity we didn’t have our dog with us as he would have loved it too . 
We will definitely return will our four legged friend for a longer visit in the summer .

Fabulous stay

An excellent hotel with superb staff . We had room 8 on the first night and we moved to room 3 the next night as I’m on crutches. The staff carried my bags up and down the stairs. The manageress was very helpful and guided us where to go to see Lake Windermere. Top class hotel can’t wait to come back again.

A top class hotel superbly furnished and great staff

I needed a place to stay near Kendal whilst visiting the Lakes with my brother. I was initially attracted by the quality of the breakfast according to previous guests. But little did I know, the offering was far more than that. As a solo traveller in need of some sleep, I was pleased to be given Room 6 which resides on the top floor with a couple of other rooms. Room 6 faces the back of the property so is shielded from the noise of the main road…although there wasn’t much noise to be fair. The room was very comfortable, quite cozy but with all the amenities you’d need including some nice complimentary chocolates on the tea tray. The bathroom was big enough and the shower suitably powerful. It was also lovely and warm due to the towel rail. The double bed itself was easily big enough for two (possibly a king) and very comfy with lots of pillows. I slept really well especially as it had been a long day of travel up from London, house hunting and then dinner in Langdale (30 mins away by taxi). The next morning I took breakfast around 9.30am and requested a full English with a coffee. The breakfast was £11 extra but easily worth it. The portion was huge with delicious local ingredients, and there is ample continental to choose from first. I had two coffees because they were so nice. Great service throughout too. I had showed my brother the lunch menu the previous day and we decided to have lunch as it looked really appealing. After all, how often do you get to try Monkfish scampi or Monkfish & Prawn tagliatelle? Everything was presented well and tasted great. And again, brilliant service despite it being super busy for lunch. To work off all the food, we went for a stroll over the fields towards Kendal straight outside the hotel. If it hadn’t been a Sunday we could have visited the farm shop and bakery opposite too. Next time. 

I can’t fault the gateway inn, and will look to stay here again when I’m back in the area.

Fabulous stay moments from Kendal

My husband and I went for dinner on 18th May. The staff were welcoming and the menu varied. We chose cod loin for our main course. It was perfectly cooked with dauphinois potatoes, carrots and green beans.  The dessert menu was all very tempting. We chose bread and butter pudding which was delicious. 
This was by far the best meal we had on our holiday in Windermere.

Excellent food

We’ve been to Kendal lots of times but never really noticed this lovely building just set back from the round about that brings you from the motorway…north or south and sends you to Kendal or the south lakes. Luckily for us a member of our family called a few weeks ago and recommended it to us. They also said that we could stay on the car park in our small camper overnight if we patronised the place. So we rang up, booked a meal and asked if we could park overnight. So having arranged it all we turned up about 4pm on Saturday evening and explained we’d booked a meal and checked all was ok with our camper. We decided to have an early drink and took in the lovely ambience of the place. We then went to change and came back for our scheduled time. We were kindly offered the table we had been using earlier. 
The menu isn’t vast but it certainly suited our tastes. We shared a starter of garlic mushrooms with cheese. Excellent. Then for mains we had cod loin and monkfish scampi in batter. Beautiful. We weren’t sure we could manage a sweet but we did. Strawberry cheesecake with ice cream. A worthy end to a great meal. 
We so enjoyed the food that we booked for breakfast this morning…….full English and by the time we had finished we were full.
I know I mentioned how good the food was but I must emphasise how professional the presentation was. Add this to the excellent and friendly staff and you end up with the perfect package.

Gateway…..great way to spend some time

Popped in here on our way through to Keswick. It was a gem of a find. Staff were excellent. The young gentleman who took our purser was lovely. 

Food just as nice! Couldn’t fault it. Wish it was more local!

Dog friendly too. We had the burger and fish and chips.

Lovely little hotel with great food, nice staff and good location. Will be staying again for sure 😃

Early check in available for 10 pound and extra 10 pound for dogs but not an issue when it’s so comfy.

Great nights stay

We had planned a weekend visit to the Lakes with another couple, and stayed at the Gateway Inn for the Saturday evening. The hotel is very easy to find, being just off the A591 roundabout to Windermere.
The Gateway Inn was recommended by a work colleague and we do thank him for that. The hotel is dog-friendly and they made us and our dogs so welcome. The location is surprisingly quiet and dogs can exercise in the hotel grounds. 
Our on-suite rooms were excellent, we had a dinner that was just so tasty (and the wine), and the next morning we were served an absolutely top breakfast. 
Whether or not you are a 'doggy' person, if you are looking for a quiet place to stay within very easy reach of Bowness-on-Windermere, then I highly recommend this hotel.

We were made to feel so welcome. Full marks to management and staff.

We were greeted by a lovely lady in reception as we had arrived earewe had to wait for our room so had a drink on the restaurant /bar area. It was quite busy and very comfortable. Our room was obviously recently refurbished and we were pleasantly surprised given the price. Huge modern bathroom with separate shower and bath. Very comfortable king size bed. Free WiFi too. Breakfast was delicious.
