We spent our Easter break cycle touring around the Golden Valley, starting and ending at Hereford and we spent one night at Kilverts. Sheila was very friendly and checked us in and indicated somewhere secure that we could store our bikes for the night. The rooms were clean and the showers hot which we needed! The cooked breakfast was filling (thank you Linda!) and Sheila even let us snaffle some Easter eggs for the road. I would stay again when I am next back in Hay-on-Wye.



Comfortable hotel

Stayed here for 3 nights. At the time the rate was £120 / night.

Bad points:
* We were told that there was no housekeeping available during our stay. No explanation nor apology.
* No TV reception.
* Bath temperature was tepid (barely warm).
* Room was dirty and unhygienic.
* Terribly grubby bed linen.
* Breakfast was awful - miserly portions, cheap ingredients and covered in oil.

Good points:
* Generally the staff were friendly and pleasant. Not sure if that would have changed had we complained.
* We got out alive.

The obvious question is why I did not complain. Its too complicated to explain here, but the logical conclusion is that if the owner was aware of the problems they would be compelled to do something. Having stayed there for 3 nights, believe me nothing would have changed - just look at their responses to the multitude of negative reviews here ... nothing, nada, zilch.

Very memorable, but for all the wrong reasons.

Went for dinner, the staff were friendly but the food was poor. We had to wait a long time for it to arrive despite the only people ordering. The veg was cold and the curry was straight out of a tin. Even the safe option of fish and chips turned out soggy

Don't eat here

Oh dear! Couldn’t be simpler fish & chips, scampi & chips, basic pub grub staples. Cold plates,  cold peas,  no tartar sauce, when it did arrive after asking we had pretty much finished our meals, couldn’t care less attitude. I cannot imagine what it is like when it is busy! Good point barmaid very pleasant!

Give the food  a miss!

We went for lunch on a Sunday whilst passing through Hay on Wye.  We had the speciality sausages for lunch.  They were absolutely fab!  Everything came out red hot.  It was delicious and reasonably priced.  Staff all lovely.  We would definitely visit again.

Looking forward to a veggie burger but sadly served a piece of cardboard in a bun.  Husband’s shepherds pie was OK but served with braised veggies.  The pub has a grubby feel to it but the staff are friendly enough.  A real shame as it’s a great location in town.

Food Awful!

We are a family of six on holiday!

When we arrived at Kilverts there was only a small number of others in the pub. It wasn’t busy! 

We ordered food for 4 Adults & Two children. 

Two adult meals Chilli Con Carne & Scampi’s arrived after 35 minutes. The Chillis were awful, and a reminder to provide the cheese that came with the Chilli Con Carne had to be made.  
Two bowls of chips were ordered, which barely filled the bowls they were served in. 

Two meals didn’t arrive at all!

This was questioned, they said they would check (I think they had totally forgotten the other two adult meals -2 Pannini’s) They finally arrived 20 minutes later, after everyone else at the table had finished their food…Totally unacceptable!!

The only good thing about our eating experience was that the Pannini was nice.

We complained politely about the poor service, but received a shoulder shrug & the comment that “he didn’t work in the kitchen”

This is also not acceptable!!!

Such a shame as this pub will not stay in business without some form of care & customer service along with someone who can cook & knows what they’re doing in the kitchen. Clearly the chef working today Wednesday 26/07 needs more training!!!

My family & I are returning to Hay-On-Wye for the farmers market, needless to say we will not be returning to KILVERTS!!!


Food Dire - Young Staff Don’t Care Attitude - AVOID!!

We arrived in Hay On Wye en route to our nearby holiday cottage after a 4 hour journey and in need of refreshment. We tried 3 cafes in town which weren’t dog-friendly (we are from the New Forest and dogs are welcome everywhere!) so ended up here.
Well I’m glad we did, as the young man behind the bar couldn’t have been more welcoming. Thank you for restoring my faith, after having been grumped at in one cafe and told we could sit outside in two others, we were beginning to feel like second-class citizens!

Booked 1 night here TUESDAY 13th June. Booking made over the phone. I can’t understand why we weren’t informed that the Inn doesn’t open on Mondays and Tuesdays. Therefore, no facilities!! No bar, No restaurant. The place was completely deserted after we checked in. Don’t know what we would have done if there had been a problem! However the room and breakfast were both good.

Not Good

Awful food.

Rude staff.

The place feels tired and unloved.

Possibly the worst meal out I’ve ever had.

The whole place feels like a health hazard.

Eat here at your peril.

They even tried to charge us for gratuity, despite serving up something with tin foil in it. Genuinely awful.
