Our rating reflects the state of the building & grounds & the fact no dinner was available on Monday nights.  The room was clean, sheets & towels of good quality.  We had a twin room and found the single beds to be small.  
The biggest asset currently is the staff, the assistant manager on duty on our arrival organised for the off duty chef to drive us to the Samson Inn so we could have dinner & the unofficial arrangement with the Bridge Inn worked fine & we obtained a lift back to the hotel.  We enjoyed our stay & would certainly be interested in returning once the hotel has been upgraded.  The setting is superb.

We stayed for 3 nights and ate each night in the restaurant wow amazing , every course each one of us had blew us away, the service by very capable and cheerful staff was wonderful,  great location for Hexam Abbey, Carlisle cathedral and hadrians wall, no light pollution at night lovely and remote beautiful starry nights, my dog was made very welcome and no charge great walks around the hotel too, for us 3 over sixties just perfect thank you to all the staff in these difficult times

Beautiful place.

The drive to and views around and of Gisland Hall Hotel were amazing. Parking facilities were good. The room was large and comfortable. The bathroom was roomy and the shower so powerful and plenty of hot water. Towels fresh and soft.
The staff were friendly and helpful and the food excellent!
Both my partner and I are looking forward to returning when it re opens after refurbishment for another relaxing stay. For us it was just the tonic we needed.

A Very Quiet and Relaxing Weekend!

Had a great time here, yes a little dated but due a refurbishment winter '21 so will be lovely next year. Can't wait to revisit. Great jump off point for walking and exploring. 
Only concern was far too many dogs and they were even in the dining area, I love dogs but not in a hotel. something I have never seen before.
Staff very friendly and helpful. I'm expecting a real bar next year as there was only a poorly stocked mobile trailer on our visit. Food was very good and overall we would return again.

Called today to find hotel closed and grounds looked very neglected.   The plants in the summerhouse are almost dead.  Sad to see it like this as we had some good times there.   I think it would take a while to put it right, but I hope it will be given a new lease of life eventually.

Closed and grounds neglected

Booked for Mothers Day 2020.Cancelled due to Covid.No refund Given.
Told by Reception that could book for a future date and they would hold on to money.
Over the last few months not answering the phone or emails.So decided to drive to Hotel during August HOTEL ALL CLOSED UP Nobody on premises at all.Decided to investigate further by ringing the Administrator in charge of sale of property.Very curt reply given as to a hold up in the sale????.SO Why are bookings still being taken for a hotel that is closed??.I know we are not alone in this as many comments on Gilsland Hotel Facebook Page.

This hotel is not open.

I booked a few rooms for friends and family in May as part of an attempt to walk Hadrian's wall. I received notification through the booking agent (hotels.com) that we would need to reschedule due to Covid and received a hotels.com voucher for £237. I contested this voraciously since it would be impossible to reorganise the event, but I was told this was the only option available and no refunds would be given.

I made a second booking for the 14th of August to use up the voucher. The voucher wouldn't allow me to book more than one room and I couldn't stay for more than one night. They're most expensive room was £74 and this included a new booking fee! By this point I'm down over £250 for a single night in a 3 star hotel with rooms available for £60.

With two weeks to go,they've cancelled the booking and refunded me £74. There is no balance left on the original refund voucher (valid for only one booking), I've spent £163,and I have no accommodation. Needless to say hotels.com are blaming the hotel and the hotel are not answering their phone.

What can I say? Worst hotel booking experience ever. Every conversation with hotels.com inferred I should be sympathetic towards the hoteliers due to the crises and the threat to their business. I really object to that attitude. We're all trying to get through this difficult period and you can't assume someone else can afford to bail you out. Nobody knows what the person next to them is dealing with. I certainly don't have a bottomless wallet to compensate this hotel for a global pandemic.

Unfair policies

Overnight stay for two last September 29th using the Groupon deal, standard room, evening meal & buffet breakfast all for £59 absolute bargain.  Staff were helpful & friendly, the evening meal was enjoyable, the buffet Scottish breakfast was fresh & tasty, would highly recommend the food. Gardens &  country were lovely. The room was basic but clean & the on suite & shower  looked recently done, the view was of a roof over the conservatory not very good. I do have to agree with another reviewer the hotel does need updating. It’s a lovely big build  & gardens that’s little tried but overall a pleased stay. Would we return, perhaps we reach a certain age we would revisit.

Food , staff & settings were enjoyable, more suited for retirees

Booked in on the Sunday night before the Covid-19 lockdown. We were working at the nearby test range. As we were on site already and it was open, the Gilsland stayed open for us. They could not have been more accommodating. The rooms were fine, the showers very powerful. Breakfast and dinner were great and the packed lunches designed to keep you going. The wi-fi is not hotel wide. The team there were amazing and they waited to shut the kitchen down after us on the morning we checked out. These are the people you want looking after you.
