Katua's Hotel

Staff were very friendly and helpful, nice small breakfast buffet, internet was ok/good for Dili standards, location is decent. This place has some history as a popular restaurant/cafe during the UN transition.

The hotel is a bit pricey for what it is...my room was about 65 $ and while the room was indeed nice, the bathroom was certainly not worth such a high price (e.g. it was impossible to properly flush without using the nearby shower). However, the room and everything else was very clean, the bed was comfortable, the air conditioning worked well and the staff is extremely friendly (like pretty much every person I have had the pleasure to meet in the amazing Timor Leste actually). Also, the food in the restaurant was always very good.

After staying at an expensive waterfront Dili hotel my friend and I moved to Katua's. A twin room was less than half price (US$45), has a fast free laundry service and a good breakfast (really good coffee and bread that's not sweet!) and strong free WiFi in rooms and common areas. Rooms are clean, shower and toilet not here at but perfectly adequate. 
Large fridge in room and lots of clothes hanging space. 
The rooms don't have views but it's quiet and We'll located.
The staff were really lovely, professional and helpful and have very good English. 
I'd stay here again every time.

I liked the relaxed atmosphere in Katuas. Staff was caring right throughout. The lady for reservations Telia was generous and cheerful. She asked every day if I was happy with my room, and if I had any wish. Laundry was done daily, and brought in nicely ironed. There was hot water in the bathroom shower! TV was working, with international channels. I was able to watch BBC and CNN!
My room was just good. I had lots of space, and a balcony. Nothing to be unhappy about there.
Breakfast was of a reasonable standard. Food in the restaurant was tasty, though pricey. 
Katuas is located in a very strategic location near everything: the beach is two minutes walk away, and major shops are within walking distance (except Timor Plaza). But taxis drive past just outside the door, literally. 
I learned that Katuas, which means old man, refers not to the owner of the hotel who I thought was old, but to the fact that it is the oldest hotel in Dili, in East Timor! For the oldest hotel, it is still quite modern.

Got taxi from cruise ship. Went for drive to see Jesus statue. We weren't comfortable with driver so got him to drop us at this hotel.. Drinks very reasonable & lunches also but we didn't eat. Very helpful staff. Ordered us a blue taxi which are metered much happier with second driver.  First taxi was yellow which are not recommended.  We were shown a numerous amount of embassies.  All very impressive buildings.  There must be confidence in the country's future

Timor Leste

I am very sorry for the local staff who were very nice to me when I stayed for 10 days but the owner / manager was so rude and racist too. 
He never replied the complaint with smile and I wasn't even rude to him just asked why the water didn't run out and the water heaters was not working.
He asked me: " Do you have any kind of this problem in your country?"
I answered: For 75$ per day, No I never find any situation like this in any country and I traveled many countries even to Africa.
He said, well..that's your problem, here..we face the problem.
That's not the way you treat your customer and I'd rather stay at the Plaza Hotel for the price 80$ per day. Sorry, I am a bit traumatic.

Nice local staff but very racist and rude of Portuguese manager

the office manager is very bossy. He asked his staff to call me to come to his office to pay the bill while I was eating my breakfast. The menu for breakfast doesn't change everyday, so you will eat the same menu. Sometimes his expression is just unconcerned with my complain about my room, for example when the water doesn't come in the morning, or when flush of the toilet is being clogged.  He is very rude with his staff. Most of the staff who work are local women. I don't want to call him as a racist but it happens. You can do a short interview with the women staff to know how the manager treat them. However, the staff are very friendly. They will treat you better and always be ready to service you
