This is our second stay at this excellent little hotel. The owner is a fantastic host who knows Zermatt and the mountains very well. The hotel is clean, warm, dry, and comfortable. The rooms with Matterhorn views do not fail to impress, but if you opt for a room without a view don’t worry - it’s there outside the front door every day! The location is very central - five minute walk to the train station and centre of town, three minutes to the furnicular, and a bus stop one minute away takes you to the glacier paradise lifts. Breakfast is modest but healthy and filling. Storage facilities are available for skis, boards, boots, etc. There is also a sauna/steam room but we did not use this most recent trip. Internet is provided. There is a comfortable lounge. If you are looking for a good value base camp - this is the place to stay.

Second stay - highly recommend.

We spent only one night here to ski at Zermatt. Christoph, the owner, was extremely helpful, arranging dinner for us and making our short stay very easy. 

There is a convenient ski storage room and a sauna that we unfortunately could not try. The breakfast was varied and abundant.

The view from our room was incredible (see photo) and the hotel is one minute away from the bus stop that can take you to the gondola lift station.

I hope I can come back soon!

The staff were very friendly and chatty. The breakfast was great and a large variety. The evening meal was 4 course. The food was served very fast and tasty. The chef made me a different vegetarian meal every night. Room had a nice view and was clean.

 City Hotel Garni is conveniently located about three blocks from the train station, on the east side of the river  and offers easy access by foot or free bus to all the lift terminals in the village. While the rooms are bright, clean and comfortable; the breakfast buffet is hearty and delicious: and the location is near to the downtown and dozens of restaurants, the special value of this place is owner Christoph. Gracious and welcoming, with a wry sense of humor, he is a life-long resident of Zermatt, a ski instructor, a mountain guide and theson of a mountain guide. If you want to know the best places to go, on- or off-trail, given your particular abilities and preferences, and the current weather and conditions, Christoph is the guy you want to talk to. We arrived 6 days after the most recent new snow hoping to find lift-served but ungroomed conditions to prepare for a one week hut tour in mountains to the north. Christopher knew just where to send us (I'm not telling where - you'll have to ask him). On the next day we booked a guided tour down the Schwartztor Glacier with him. We skied several stretches of untouched powder while other guided parties descended the standard route skiing on refrozen, often breakable crust. He knows how to assess your abilities and interests and uses that knowledge and his extensive experience to help you get the most not from your time in Zermatt.



If you ski, hike, or climb, this is where you want to stay

A charming hotel very centrally located and with the very best and nicest host.
The whole place takes you back to when it was busily, in a charming but not very luxurious way. 
Breakfast is included, but the selection is not all that.
For Zermatt, price wise good, but what an expensive town/village!!!!

Charming style from the 70”s

Stayed as part of an organized hiking trip.  While this may not be the most posh place to stay, Christof and his staff more than make up for it.  The hotel is clean and comfortable with a homey feel.  The location is great - close to the rail station and the center of town, but not quite in the thick of it, so not too noisy at night.  The room was nice, with comfortable beds and a great shower.  Breakfast was quite good with a wide variety of choices that were replenished as needed.  Christof and his staff were really outstanding - answering any questions about the area, lifts to the train, and badly needed cups of tea.  Would happily stay again just for the service.

Super location

I like small, family run hotels in ski towns. City Hotel Garni illustrates why. Booking by email was easy, like talking to a friend.  Christoph, the owner, was super helpful and volunteered lots of advice on Zermatt and our trip. Being a Zermatt ski guide by day and a hotellier at night, I don't think he ever sleeps!

On arrival, Patricia at the desk was super helpful.  Unasked, we were given room 302 which has the best Matterhorn view and a large balcony, nice in the sun in the afternoon.  The room, a throwback to an earlier, more quaint Zermatt, was spotlessly clean and the beds were super comfy. Breakfast was basic but just right, with good bread, meats, cheese, muesli and hardboiled eggs.

In the basement was a utility room for ski storage and a boot drying rack, as well as a sauna (which we did not use, however).

The location is perfect: a short walk to the Sunnega lift, slightly longer to the Gornergrat train and one minute away from the bus stop to go to Trockener Steg.  At night it was quiet, yet just a short stroll to everything, including Harry's ski bar which was always packed.

As we were leaving Zermatt on the first train at 5:37am, the night before at 10pm Christoph brought to our room a breakfast tray of juice and food to go.  Very nice of him!

Nothing is cheap in Zermatt, but Christof provides value for money.  And he is a great source of information! I highly recommend his hotel.

The personal touch!

I would agree with all of the other reviews of this hotel.  It's small.  It's cozy.  It's in a really good location.  It's on the older side, but it is very clean.  The breakfast is good, but no hot food.

What needs to be repeated, however, is just how great Christoph is.  He was incredibly helpful - even in ways you wouldn't expect.  He made New Years dinner reservations for us at a restaurant on the mountain.  He suggested that we might need flashlights to get home, so he gave us each one.  He even gave us spare batteries in case they ran out.  And, he waited up for us to return.  So thoughtful.

If you aren't in need of the fanciest facility, but would rather get a true European Inn experience, I would highly suggest this hotel.  If you want fancy with a spa, bar, or grand restaurant, go someplace else.
