One of the worst hotels I've stayed in. We booked two ocean view rooms - upon arrival, it turned out that only one of them had the actual view, while the other had mold on the walls instead of an ocean view. This room was replaced for us - with one where the air conditioning didn't work (amid high humidity and temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius!). Eventually, they managed to fix it, and the next day we were moved to a slightly better room because someone just checked out.

In general, EVERYTHING needs improvement. The air conditioning, even when it works, barely does; sometimes, you can manage to beg for cleaning, just as for towel replacements. If you run out of toilet paper - good luck finding the staff, they usually hide so well it's impossible to find them - it seems the entire hotel staff consists of three - otherwise very friendly - boys about 15 years old. The boss (owner?) only appears to collect money. Supposedly, there's also a manager, but apparently, spending 8 nights there was too short to encounter him.

Breakfasts are unappetizing, cold, and repetitive - served after a long wait, even if the restaurant is empty. And it opens for breakfast only, do not expect the decent meals mentioned in previous comments - that place no longer exists.

I do not recommend!

From what I know, there was a change of ownership or management sometime in the last year, hence such a significant decline.

A huge disappoinemnt

This hotel is outdated and in desperate need of being maintained. The room was ok but the place was dirty. Breakfast was awful only eggs, one day fried one day a pancake thin omelette another day scrambled egg, always  cold,  served with 2 very small slices of tomato and toast. Tea was ok but the coffee undrinkable. The pool was cloudy ,shower head was green and full of large red ants, there were only 4 pool loungers and only 3 had cushions. The rooms were not serviced so the same sheets and towels for the duration. The excuse was that we never left the key when we went out for the day. Staff not visible and no reception desk. The night before we left we were text to say that the bill was to be paid in cash, dollars or Stirling was fine, the morning of departure a text came through to say they wanted Sri Lankan rupees, we never had enough on us so had to go by tuk tuk to an ATM. We were given a tea bag each for each day, 2 odd cups one with a chipped saucer the other with a small tea plate, the spoon with them was a large tablespoon rather than a tea spoon. The owner’s mother came down fro Colombo to speak to us, she said her son owned the place and he loved in Australia, as we felt the service charge was a joke she removed it from the bill. This is one place we will not be coming back to.

I would not stay here.

The property is very beautiful with the tropical garden and refreshing pool, the rooms are spacious with high wooden ceilings and large verandas with sea views. WiFi and air conditioning worked well. It was quiet despite being on the main road. All you have to do is cross this main road and you are on a very nice beach with friendly beach cafes, but...

… the problem was the restaurant - a disaster! It takes a long time to be noticed as a guest. We wanted to have dinner there but... only 10 percent of the items on the menu were available: no rice and curry, no fish or seafood (excuse - since it was a full moon????), the canned beer was served warm. We ordered fried rice and a club sandwich from the meager selection and the crowning glory – they completely forgot the fried rice. After a long wait we asked for it - oh! Sorry, but no form of compensation. Nice hotel, but go somewhere else to eat!

Nice hotel, bad restaurant

Lovely place. Home from home. Very clean, tasty food and staff very attentive. Please visit this beautiful villa when you visit Sri Lanka. Sea front right by door step. Food served fresh and tasty. The villa also has a restaurant which is very helpful if you stay B and B.

Beautiful villa

A very atmospheric hotel at a good price. Several buildings in a beautiful garden. There are 2 apartments in each building. Ours was on the floor with two terraces. Clean and nice. Very good breakfasts - a choice of Asian or European. I highly recommend this accommodation.

Very nice stay in Moonstone Villas

We were in this hotel six years ago and it still is in good shape. The rooms are huge with  large good beds and lots of place to sit. We loved being in the back, because the road can be a bit noisy. With a tuktuk or motercycle you can visit other beaches and the string of restaurants in the "crowded" aerea but the beach just in front is quite spetacular too.
We hope to come back to this nice place!

Big comfy rooms, good vibes.

After a very disappointing airbnb debacle, we landed at the Moonstone for a night. Service was lovely, the room super comfortable and the bathroom clean. Unfortunately there was a problem with major roadwork nearby and so we were awakened by pile drivers banging away at 1-4am-NOT THE HOTEL’S FAULT, but be aware of the road project, as it’s a big one. We had both dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and the food was not very good-not terrible, just bland and flavorless. The restaurant service was also a little spotty. I would recommend this hotel for location, very nice staff and super comfortable, spacious rooms. Maybe eat elsewhere? 

Super Comfortable Room

We stayed at Moonstone villas for 9 days and we really enjoyed it. Near a beatiful and quite beach- opposite side of the road-. Comfortable rooms with enough space inside and outside. Nice staff. Aldo the pizza and breakfast was good.

9 days relaxing

Average hotel. Large rooms, bed and terrace/balcony area. Room was clean. 
Breakfeast was good but took very Long time to serve it (we where the only guest during breakfast). Pool looked ok but we didn’t use it. 
We choose the hotel because of the good reviews. Having stayed there, I would choose a different location (at the main beach area (the Long beach). 
The hotel is at the main road, you can cross the street and reach within 2min a small beach and find 2 restaurants. 
We took a tuktuk the next day to the main beach where it is great. 


Good Hotel at main road

We were in restaurant. It is quite nice place in Tangalle with good and friendly staff. Pizza and seafood were good. 1500 rupees per person was our bill. Big portions and tasty. You can also try burgers.
