Park House is a historic Mossel Bay Sandstone house built in...  It's a delightful, quirky place and a good place to stop over to explore Mossel Bay if you look for value  for money and are not afraid of meeting a wide range of people from all walks of life.  There are two sides to the House - one a Lodge and the other a more basic backpacker's experience. The Lounge and bar, brazo and other communal areas are shared. 

The attraction of Park House is its history and position in the Old City, close to or within walking distance of the historic centre with its quirky restaurants, cafes, unique Monroe house theatre, antique shops, flea markets, harbour fish restaurants - and wonderful beaches.  The furniture is period and absolutely in keeping with the age of the house and it's history - which I loved.  I was there precisely because it is a Historic monument to Victorian Mossel Bay - and I wanted to feel I was in a period house, not some over-restored fake that tried to hide it's blemishes and age! 

One of the attractions too is that Park House is in a very quiet area - by a delightful  historic park with fountains and streams and an animal sanctuary.  The House has a delightful tree shaded and grassy garden for guests to enjoy - and a historic porch to eat on. The night I stayed I only heard birds and the sound of gentle rain on the garden.  I must also say that all the guests I experienced - coming from a wide range of professions and social position -  were respectful and thoughtful of others - perhaps responding to the general ethos that one feels immediately on entering the House. 

The point about Park House is the experience of staying in a historic house.  Some guests who have posted less than complimentary reviews seem not to understand this and should do their research more carefully before deciding where to stay! The House is filled with historic woodwork (the  precious yellow-wood stairs, window frames and shutters are a glory!!)  The property is not a chic, modern place - it has old, worn corners and is an old Lady!!   so if you are seeking the usual modern, generic, ordinary hotel experience, go elsewhere! 

My experience was happy and memorable.  The House is very well managed by Lelani and her staff -  on a very tight budget.  She has been holding this venerable old Lady in her care for some years and, with limited resources, is doing a commendable job.  The House is spotless, well maintained as possible (within the constraints of an old, largely un-restored house).  Lelani provides little touches such as natural air fresheners in the bathrooms, fresh soap,  the beds are made up wit fresh looking and attractive linen and look excellent. The Communal Kitchen is a basic backpackers one but has good clean crockery and the usual utensils (in the usual state! - but this IS a backpacker's kitchen, so go figure! )

I certainly will be returning to Park House to stay when on my next visit to this surprising, slightly sleepy historic City.

A Wonderful Historic Old Lady, delightful and well run

Arrived at midnight. Staff was available and friendly. We did not have a booking and we had our four legged baby with us. Definitely pet-friendly! Our on-suite room was neat, fresh and tidy. Hot coffee and tea was available that time of night. The old rustic house, made of sandstone are beautiful - my type of architecture! Beautiful garden and more than enough space for your own tent if you prefer. The main attraction for us at that time of the night was the fact that they are about the only pet-friendly place in Mossel Bay! Not near the beach, but you are in this Holiday Town, so on your way to the beach, by car or hiking, do some exploring. There is a lot to explore in Mossel Bay. Park House Lodge is next to a beautiful park, Tennis Court 
and center of Town.

Not only for backpackers.

Park house lodge and backpackers is rated 4 star (according to whom I do not know). Whoever rated this dump is either blind or stupid. It is also very deceiving on their website, showing pretty pictures of   an empty space with a garden table and chairs where you can supposedly pitch your tent. It states they can accomodate 4 to 5  tents. We had booked for 4 people in a 5 man tent. When we arrived we had to park our vehicle and trailer in the street. This meant lugging our tent and everything needed for camping from outside the lodge to the tent spot. The parking was not secure or safe as it was just in the street outside the house. There were already two 2-man tents so not enough space for our 5-man tent. This was clearly only suitable for backpackers on a shoestring budget. We had to cancel and this was also a dilemma. The person at the front desk refused to give back our deposit. Park House Lodge and Backpackers is a disgrace to the hospitality industry. 

Campers Beware!

Passing through mossel bay we stopped at park house lodge. What a disappointment! Firstly we were told it was walking distance to the beach which we soon found out it wasn't! Secondly our towels that we were given were dirty, the bathrooms smelt of smoke and there was dirt on the floors of our room. Lastly before leaving after one day as we could not handle more we went to the community kitchen only to find that our food had been stolen. Never going back! Worst backpackers we have stayed in so far in South Africa.

Absolutely terrible !

kudos to the wonderful garden, nice location and strong wifi. 

however,  towels and sheets are obviously worn out.  i had to use my beach towel as a blanket instead because bedsheets are tramslucent due to wear n tear which seemed old n dirty.  

consider a ventilation system in the rooms as it seems quite stuffy.

I got a double room with a bathroom shared with one other room for 220 rand. With private bath was 260. Great historic looking house and grounds next to a park. Easy walk to the harbor to eat at Kaai 4. Good TV room and self serve beers and sodas. Large braai area for groups.
