Such an amazing place; a magical setting and the perfect spot from which to explore northern Portugal (only 45 mins from Porto). The 16th-century converted monastery is stunning and the rooms are beautifully decorated, with lovely views of the gardens, courtyard and fountains.  We spent a week here in mid-September, and enjoyed swimming in the beautifully clear spring-fed pool, as well as walking from the hotel up to the nearby hilltop Chapel. Breakfasts were delicious, and the English owners couldn't have been more helpful with advice about where to go and what to see in the area. Couldn't recommend more highly.

Tranquil beauty

We spent three nights here on the first part of our stay in northern Portugal and this was certainly the highlight of our holiday.
Such a beautiful and peaceful spot, clean, beautifully furnished rooms and friendly, helpful hosts not to mention the idyllic pool setting.Would love to return!

Stunning

We stayed two nights as part of our Camino and this was the highlight of our trip.  Not only are the grounds and the buildings fit for royalty, the friendly owners really made it so special for us. The rooms are large and beautifully decorated.

We were treated like royalty

Stayed here for a week in the middle of September, so that we could explore Northern Portugal. Simply  amazing. Kate and Piers could not have been more helpful. Information about the area and the attractions were freely given. The gardens and pool area are great. Just a pity that the Kiwi fruit Vines have not fruited this year. A fabulous location if you want to explore the North. Porto, 45 minutes away by train is a must visit place. Piers and Kate many thanks, Steve and Margaret.

Amazing place.

As other guests have noted, Piers and Kate are gracious and knowledgeable. Because they've lived in the area for a long time, they can provide you with good recommendations for restaurants, directions, parking--whatever you need! Plus, they've made their Quinta into a wonderful and relaxing place for guests. The rooms are large, well-appointed, and comfortable, making the Quinta a great spot to begin and end your day!

Restful place to visit the area

Piers and Kate are great hosts. Very helpful with our trip to the Douro Valley and dinners out at local resturants.The breakfast was wonderful, the grounds are wonderful, the entire place had a wonderful feel to it.

Wish we had more time here.

Quinta do Convento da Franqueira is a historic convent that the Gallie family have owned for about 60 years and made their own. Piers and Kate have run it since the mid '80s and have 4 rooms for B&B and also have 2 one bed roomed flats for let. Set in large grounds about 5 km from Barcelos.  We stayed in one of the flats for a week.  Nice and roomy , comfortable bed with adequate cooking facilities.  Piers and Kate were extremely welcoming, and gave us plenty of ideas where to visit, shop for food, restaurants to eat in etc.  We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this to folk who enjoy staying in authentic historic surroundings.
