La Puerta Verde Hostel

I was at LA PUERTA VERDE last year 2017 on november for 3 nights. Great atmophere, great service, great breakfast and very clean rooms. But my favorite story to tell is this..... Honduras was playing the qualifier for the world cup 2018 against Australia. Peru was playing also at the ame time. So, I knew that nobody will play my little honduran game, who cares realy, and I went back to the hostal and ask the guys over there. The managger brings his own tv and laptop and play the game just for me. Is that awsome or what? I will see LA PUERTA VERDE next month. It will be a pleasure again.

Awazing place .... totally recommended.... i love these guys , they are so nice and helpful and really make you feel at home .... my choice in Lima anytime .... and hopefully soon as possible.... only on enduru bike ;)

Nice place in the Barranco area of Lima. Walking down the street will lead you to a nice view of the Atlantic Ocean. Shops, supermarkets, restaurants and bars within walking distance. The hostel is kind of an open space though, many open windows and all that - might be a bit cold to some people (I just arrived from the Amazon, so in May/June I froze my buns off at times) but nevertheless a nice place with amazing and super kind staff. 

The breakfast is simple but sufficient and the kitchen is good enough to prepare some food in and keep your store bought products chilled in the communal fridge.The bathrooms are clean and the bar/terrace area is a nice place to hang out at. The wifi is great!

You will probably get a map of which you are going to be told that the area displayed will be safe. It must be safe in general as I trust that the hostel has their guests safety at heart but I just want to share that I was unlucky since I got robbed in the area. Just saying. I guess you can expect it anywhere so don't let it interfere with your decision in staying here since the staff is delightful and it id, in essence, a big house where everyone is family.

Great friendly service!

My only choice

Pepe greeted us late at night when we arrived.  He generously showed us around and gave us two adjoining rooms.  We knew about the shared bathrooms and common space and that did not faze us.

What was shocking was that there was no running water and no serviceable wifi.  The water was turned back on in the morning, but other than a bit of wifi occasionally via his cell phone, that never really worked out.

What came out over time was that he was cash-starved and had just bought half of the business a few months earlier.  With a bit more capital, he could fix the place up and it has the potential to be a very nice place to stay. 

The neighborhood of Barranco is lovely to walk around, especially in the evenings when it really comes alive.  The bluff above the beach is a block and a half away and there is a pleasant walkway along it.

The rooms were dank and smelled moldy, largely due to the humid climate.  The bathrooms are adequate, but also dank and run-down.  One of our beds was plenty large but way too hard for me to sleep in comfortably; I slept in the nearby twin bed instead.  

The breakfast is typical continental stuff - a couple of rolls, juice, and coffee.  The senora serving it was lovely.

The courtyard is a nice place to hang out for breakfast and otherwise.

We never received a key to the front (green) door.  We had to be buzzed in every time we returned to the place - not ideal.

Don't go here.  They were rude and had a poor quality place.  The initial arrival was fine, and the first of two owners was kind and cheerful.  But, he left without providing towels or toilet paper.  His office furthermore was kind of far from our room, so going up there was annoying.  He didn't have enough towels in his hostal to give us clean ones for a while.  Those were the only towels we got the entire three nights we stayed there.  When we settled in, we realized the mattress was uncomfortable, the top blanket hadn't been washed, and the room had a bad odor.  The second day, the promoted breakfast was just bread and coffee, and we realized he gave us the wrong key- back up to the office to get a new key.  The third day, using the new key caused the door handle to come off in my hand- back up to the office.  This time he offered us a bolt and key...  Just before leaving, the second owner showed up, and rudely insisted that we hurry up and leave because his next guests were arriving, and that we make sure we cleaned our dishes after eating.  A more respectful, polite request would have been fine.  Who doesn't clean their own dishes?  His maid then played suit and continued asking to come in to clean every 5 minutes while we packed.  We finally just let her in while we packed.  
The only good thing about this place is that the owner sent us the address of the hostal before we jumped in a taxi, and that the other guests were interesting people.  The actual place was flat cheap, if not gross.
