Glendale Bed and Breakfast

We spent a night in Glendale on our way to Dunedin. The house is absolutely gorgeous, a perfectly maintained Edwardian small but lovely mansion, in a well preserved park. We received a warm welcome, were provided with useful information on Oamaru and the region, and were even offered a treat as we were celebrating two big birthdays. The rooms were huge and spotless. A big thank you to our hosts.

Glendale remains one of the very best possible experiences, not just in Oamaru but anywhere. The property is excellent, the service the same, rooms huge and beautifully appointed, breakfasts is magnificent. The host/s are on hand at all times to assist and guide on local options, The gardens are wonderful and this is a real home away from home. Despiite the odd comment to the contrary, location is excellent - much better to be in this oasis with a short trip to town than otherwise. It is convenient to the CBD and to all major routes and attractions. Go to Glendale with full confidence of fantastic value for money and service. One of our favourite places.

Very lovely Edwardian house, with large rooms and one of the closest beds I have ever slept in.  Welcoming host and clean facilities.  Breakfast offering could be expanded, but otherwise the experience was fine.

Fantastic place to stay!

Outstanding, As Always

Comfortable nights rest

The picture on the TripAdvisor website is much nicer than reality. We thought this place would be as good as Ormslie House where we stayed earlier in our trip. Sadly, we were very disappointed when our first impression was made by the front steps being covered in bird droppings. Given the wet weather for a large part of the time in NZ, a trip hazard was screaming to us with this entrance-way. Visions of Fawlty Towers sprang to mind after we checked in to our room. We had to struggle up the steep stairs with our suitcases and then be amazed for the owner's benefit on the size of the room. The en-suite was very pokey and basic. Not what we had become used to in previous B&B's.
So far as the breakfast part of B&B was concerned, it was the most disappointing of the trip. Bacon was poorly cooked, the eggs were poached in a plastic poacher and not runny, and the fruit for compote was straight out of a tin. I'm sure NZ does fresh fruit!!!
The owner was quite friendly as was his wife.
The place is close to the Penguin Sanctuary and to the SteamPunkt museum (worth visiting), and the old town buildings on the foreshore.

Mediocre Breakfast

We really wanted to like this place.  The house and grounds are lovely.  All my interaction before arrival with Sue had been great.  She was prompt with answering my piles of questions and so friendly and helpful, particularly with last minute reservations at Fleur's Place.  But she wasn't there when we arrived, and we didn't see her until breakfast the morning we left.  We arrived to a freezing cold house - boiler broken, not their fault - small space heaters were provided.  Payment was expected straight away, before we had even gone to our rooms, which we thought rather abrupt.  Our room was huge and comfortable.  The bathroom was large, but absolutely no shelf space for our stuff.  Our friend's room was small with nowhere for her to open up her suitcase other than on the bed.  There is a nice guest lounge where we enjoyed a glass of wine in the evening.  There is a guest fridge on the landing.  Tea/coffee making facilities provided in the room.  Breakfast was fine, but tinned tomatoes?  We were very surprised to come back after a day out to discover our rooms hadn't been touched.  We had said we didn't need our towels changed, so they weren't and the bed wasn't made.  Our friend asked for clean towels, which she got but also bed not made.  We were astonished at that.
