I've stayed in the Brown Kiwi the first week  of my New Zealand trip. There is nothing I could complain about. The staff is super kind and helpful the rooms are super clean as well as the bathrooms and the kitchen and in the kitchen is everything that you need for cooking. The small garden is a real paradise too. I can't wait to come back and would recommend the Hostel to everyone. 

We really loved the garden and the bohemian decor. Friendly staff. Approachable cat a bonus. Good double room which is a separate cabin in the garden, which we appreciated, you don’t really hear the other guests except when they walk by to go to the bathroom. Wifi okay, could be better but it’s the usual quality of a hostel in my experience. Room got a little cold at night but since we’re heading for summer it shouldn’t be a problem much longer. Which there’d be a power outlet on each side of the bed but not a big deal. The main problem is how small the kitchen is, it’s very cumbersome at peak hours, all the guests are in each other’s way and it’s annoying if you’re not feeling in a social mood. Otherwise the social areas are great to chat with other travellers. Area is not too far from the city centre but to get back it’s uphill which can be exhausting after a day’s hike, I took a bus a few times. Overall one of the most pleasant hostel I’ve been to, with a chill and homely atmosphere. Would go back

Brown Kiwi was an excellent place to start our holiday in Auckland. The staff are friendly, comfortable set up, great communal kitchen and lounge area, fantastic court yard and a welcoming atmosphere. Not a party hostel, just good vibes. The location is fantastic and probably the real highlight- Ponsonby is a lively suburb with eveything you need and only a short walk to the CBD

My husband and I spent our last night in New Zealand at this delightful, cheap little hostel right in the trendy, interesring Ponsonby district.
The hostel is comprised of an old 2 storey Victorian villa with attractive little units/chalets in the back garden/yard.
We had a reasonable sized private room in the yard which had beds for 3 people (a double below with a single bunk above). The beds were beautifully made up with decent, clean bedding. The room was nicely decorated too with homely touches.
There was a decent sized bedside table with a lamp, a chair and good, blackout curtains. There was a wall heater and a dehumidifier.
Sadly there was no fan and it was very hot! We couldn't open the windows as there were small ponds in the yard so lots of mosquitos + there was a noisy group of young people socialising in the yard gone midnight. It's a hostel and we expect that! It just meant we couldn't get any fresh air during the night. 
There was a bathroom in the main house or a lean to exterior toilet and shower just by our room, which we opted to use. It was basic but VERY clean. 
Unfortunately, as our chalet was 2 storey, it had an exterior wooden staircase to the room above. An occupant up there came hammering loudly down the steps to the bathroom at 3am and then hammering back up. 
We didn't use the communal areas but all looked clean and sociable. 
There was a power cut during the night (no fault of the hostel) so our 'phones didn't charge. The very nice young man on reception lent me his power pack to put some juice in our 'phones. The staff we encountered were all pleasant, friendly & helpful.
I can't imagine the place would be suitable for disabled guests as it has wooden steps up to the front door and there is a high concrete step 1/2 way down the back yard between the outside tables & seats and the chalets. 
We were very pleased with the value for money at $90 NZ (I think) for the night for our private room. 

Ok so this was my second hostel experience but what a great one. Really friendly staff plus the way it’s set out you sort of feel your at home. Great kitchen lockers in the room clean bathroom and sheets and lovely out door and kitchen area.Box for your food great cooking facility’s  I can’t really fault the place. Easy to get to the centre of the city once you find the green bus route.  But even though it’s only my second I think it will come high in my ratings as I travel.

This place sure felt comfortable for a hostel for a couple of friends. The place was basic ; private rooms, shared kitchen, shared washroom/showers (a few) and laundry area. I liked how they have a separate house for us to stay in. The staffs were also accomodating and helpful. Would recommend to stay here if you find the city could be too busy for you.

I have stayed in several BBH hostels and I was quite disappointed with this one. It didn’t feel as homely and comfy as the others, it was more like a youth hostel. The biggest problem is that there weren’t enough toilets/bathrooms for all the guests (and we weren’t there during the high season). The kitchen was very small too. The hostel was clean and okay for a two-night stay. 

Ok hostel 

So I stayed at this hostel with my friend and it was our first one. The hostel is in a good location, good neighborhood and close to the CBD. As far for cleanliness and comfort it’s not the best but decent value for money.
What ruined our experience overall was the workers at the hostel, while the main problem was with this one called Nicole. She would scream at the backpackers, would not help out in anything and just throw sarcastic and terrible comments at you. This just ruined our staying there and all backpackers felt the same. Whenever she’s in duty and cleans we would see her go and vacuum the whole personal areas such as the kitchen, seating table(!!!) and places people eat and cook with the actual vacuum she just used to clean the hostel’s floor and toilets!!! In front of us! Instead of just cleaning with her hands or anything else like normal. 
Would definitely not come back. You have better hostels to stay in.
Would be happy to talk to Hostels owner or staff and explain further.
