Hotel Casa Murguia

Casa Murguía was perfect for a month long stay with friends or family joining me a week at a time. It was close to all the major sites in the city , but felt like an oasis once you came back. The large patio space and lap pool made the afternoons blissful. Daily housekeeping made life even easier. The other guests were friendly, so you could socialize when the mood struck. A lovely month!

Our families took a break from the rain and snow in Portland and Denver, respectively, and rendezvoused at Casa Murguia in the heart of the historic central district of Oaxaca, For us, it was perfect.  We Iike to be apple to shop at local food markets and cook some of our own meals while traveling and C. Murguia offered just those amenities. The various casitas surround a central courtyard and pool.  Our two bedroom had a king size in one and a couple of twin beds in the other.  Inside the compound was quiet and restful. And yet we were just a few steps from the action of the zocalo and the many fine restaurants and clubs.  Owner Mary Jane takes great care of guests and even interceded when we agreed to hire a local for a whole day trip out of the City.  When the self-proclaimed tour guide showed up to pick us up, Mary Jane pulled us aside and counseled that she knew this person and it would be best not to go with him.  She made other arrangements that likely saved us a lot of grief.  All in all a fine experience at a lovely property in a special place.

We were a party of 8 for a week over New Years.  Casa Murguia was perfect with the separate casitas yet comfortable, ample communal space.  The pool was inviting, but it was a bit too chilly to take advantage of.  Maria Antonio did a fabulous job of housekeeping. I must caution;however, that sleeping (even with ear plugs) was almost impossible in the bedroom of the Primavera casita due to the nightclub in the neighborhood.  It's possible that it was due to the holidays as tourism was at a high level, but music was still blaring at 5:30am on Saturday as we left for the airport.  There was only one night during the week that the music was not a problem.  I will say that the noise level was not as high in the other casitas - as reported by my friends. 

I would recommend Casa Murguia but not in Primavera casita.

This was the second year my husband and I stayed at Casa Murguia and we enjoyed it just as much as our first.  The location is excellent - just a few blocks to Santo Domingo and the busy Zocalo Centro but far enough away to enjoy the serenity of La Casa after a day of sightseeing and shopping.  The lovely pool was very welcoming in the afternoon after the sun had warmed it up and the upstairs deck was a great place to start our day with coffee and watch the sun rise over the mountains.
Accommodation at our casita was more than adequate - tiny kitchen but well stocked with utensils and there is a gas barbeque for the guests' use which proved invaluable since we only had a cook top and no oven in our unit.  The king size bed was very comfortable and Maria Antonio did an excellent job of cleaning and generally looking after the whole property almost single-handedly - she was amazing.
Although Mary Jane wasn't around La Casa very much since she has a ranch outside of Oaxaca where she spends a lot of her time, we found her to be delightful and very easy to deal with when we made our bookings.
This is not 5 star luxury but it is extremely comfortable and it was great to have a kitchen to prepare meals since we were there for 3 weeks and going out for lunch and dinner every day could become tedious.  Great markets close by to get fresh produce, fish and chicken and the local convenience store is well stocked with basics.
Great taco place right across the street but many excellent restaurants within walking distance.  I would highly recommend a stay at Casa Murguia.

Casa murguia is perfectly located for exploring the old city of Oaxaca including the shops, restaurants, museums and markets. The accommodation includes a small well stocked kitchen and there is a fabulous pool with plenty of space to sun and relax.
