An excellent pension in the Pension Village. Hosts are excellent. Food is amazing. The host is very knowledgeable local and former ski instructor. Rooms a clean and warm, with views of surrounding mountains. A Japanese hot bath awaits at the end of a hard days skiing. Well recommend.

Our favorite place to stay in Japan.  Mr. and Mrs. Sato are very nice and accommodating.  Mrs. Sato, who originally is from Kyoto learned basic of traditional Japanese cuisine there and is a superb chef.  The food was delicious and healthy with a lot of vegetables.  Bread, dessert, jam everything is homemade.  Mr. Sato takes care of their beautiful English garden beside the pension.  Their garden is beautiful and pictured in a national garden magazine in Japan. The room is homey and has wifi.  The outside bath has a nice view of the mountains and you can lock when you use so you have privacy.   We visited in June which is middle of the rainy season.  We walked around Zao downtown and went to several free public onsen baths that were very soothing. Downtown is compact and has a nice atmosphere and kind people.  We took the ropeway to Zao mountain.  Although we could not see the crater because of fog, we enjoyed the hiking. We have stayed here in the winter in the past and it looks so different because everywhere is covered with snow.  Zao is an excellent ski resort and we noticed they now have a brand new cable car to top of the mountain.  We will definitely want to come back here.

The owners are just wonderful!! 
They will do anything to make you feel comfortable. Since the bus was not functional on that period, the owner drove us everyday to the ski rental shop and the ski slopes. 
The food was excellent and so was their wine collection. We even got a New Years greeting card from them in our mailbox. We will definitely go back there and recommend it to all our friends.
P.S. They have a wonderful private outdoors onsen.

We skied at Zao Onsen and chose this pension as one of the more reasonably priced options.  Our stay exceeded expectations - our host was so helpful driving and picking us up from ski slopes.  The meals were delicious with all ingredients very fresh and of high quality!  A hearty breakfast included home made rolls and jam.  Dessert at dinner one night was home-made salted caramel ice cream.  The pension was spotless and they have a small but lovely outdoor onsen that we soaked in each night.  It is just a couple of minutes into town and we appreciated the quiet of this cluster of pensions.  It would be lovely to visit in the summer as we saw photos of our hosts' beautiful gardens.  My only reason for not rating our stay as excellent is that our room was small for 3 people.  We didn't mind as it was just a place to sleep, but this may be a concern for others.  Really recommend Pension Apple.
