We recently spent 2 nights in Ainokura as we wanted to stay in an old farmhouse and explore the UNESCO villages including Shirakawa-gō.  We read that Ainokura was less touristy and this was correct. We booked through japaneseguesthouses.com  It was more authentic and quieter, without the buses and tourists. We stayed at Choyoman farmhouse, 315 years old, and our hostess, Miyume, was wonderful, the food was incredible and very authentic with fresh river trout baked in the open pit. Our beds were warm and the hot tub, great. We were delighted to find a shrine in our room! Highly recommend this incredible country experience in Japan.

My brother and I stayed here in December and it was worth every penny. The food was a delight as well - we even had koi sashimi and a brilliant selection of Japanese mountain vegetables. My brother and I loved every moment, especially waking up with a snow-laden village in the morning with not a person in sight! Perfect for those who love to take photographs like us.

We were there in April and the experience was amazing. The hostess was nice, polite and warm. Food was great, the futons were comfortable and pretty much no complains whatsoever. Recommended for those wanting to see some authentic old-time Japan. 

Ainokura is a stunning traditional farmhouse town surrounded by snow capped mountains.
Easy to get to and from by World Heritage (Kaetsuno) bus from Shin-Takaoka station; or if other times suit bus from Ainokura to Johana Station then local train to Shin-Takaoka. Pay on the bus, good signage.
We stayed here for one night, wish we had 2 nights so we could really relax.
Lovely host who spoke reasonable English. The food was lovely, dinner was at 6.30pm and we could choose breakfast time. We chose 8am so we could catch the 10am bus (check out was at 10am).
Very traditional house with rice paper sliding walls/doors between rooms. Nice warm futon beds.
Highly recommend. We'll come back again.

Among three choice, I chose Ainokura as this place is very remoted and nothing modern which prohibits my thoughts exists around. Snow is more heavy than Suganuma and much less tourists than Shirakawago.You can take hot sake ''Sanshoraku'' at a cost which is made by local Sake maker nearby eating skewer grilled  river fish, vegetables and Sashimi. You have to pay attention to a bus company called Kaetsuno which cancelled all of the sadden(actually they have been cancelled for more than one month but no announcement in the internet) the last bus to Ainokura from Johana which was believed in operation different from others which are officially canelled and announced in the internet.
I ended up paying more than 8 times taxi fare than the bus ticket. A bus driver of Kaetsuno on the next day disregarded me and did not stop at the Ainokura bus stop
and went about 50 meters and stopped. He shouldhave been  thinking about other things or believed that no one would wait there at eary times

Lovely host, delicious dinner, authentic gasso house, tranquil setting. If you're after something different, authenticity and don't mind basic conditions this one is for you. Definitely worth staying at Ainokura rather than a day trip to Gokoyama.

Picturesque tiny gasso house village

Room was somewhat small and charmless comparing to other ryokans and minshukus across Japan and more expensive than those. I guess the price tag comes from the fact that you sleep in the very heart of Ainokura, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Lady who took care of us was very very kind. She prepared for us great local Japanese dinner and breakfast and in the morning even took us by car to the bus station down on the main road to catch a local bus to Johana.
