My family enjoyed a wonderful stay at Oyado Yamakyu in July 2023. There were 5 of us: three adults and two children -- age 10 and 12 -- staying in 2 rooms. We stayed two nights, and it was our favorite stay of our 16 day trip. Everything about Oyado Yamakyu was wonderful -- staff were welcoming and helpful, and very kind to our children. The location was perfect with easy access to sights, restaurants, etc. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The baths were lovely. The food was amazing. Because we were there for two nights, they provided a different meal experience on the second night. I really can't recommend this place enough.

Perfect place to stay in Takayama -- a highlight of our trip

We had the best time at this friendly ryokan. All staff were kind and spoke some English to help us with our insufficient Japanese. Room was clean, onsen delightful and food just absolutely amazing. A great experience all round. To make life even easier, transport was provided to and from the station. Thank you to everyone at Oyado Yamakyu!

If you are looking to stay at a ryokan or hotel in Takayama, I would highly recommend Oyado Yamakyu. The dinner and breakfast was truly a great cultural and dining experience. The onsen bath on the property was such a relaxing place to be soaking in after a long day visiting the Shirakawa-go village. 
The entire staff was so cheerful, helpful and welcoming during our stay from the moment we checked in.
It is about a 15 mins walk from the station but after a such a memorable stay, I would not mine the walk. Arrangement can be made to be dropped at the station. 5-10 mins walk to the morning market and other attractions in town.

Best ryokan experience in Takayama

I've never had better service in my life. The staff was all so friendly and helpful. I felt like I was staying at a relative's house rather than a hotel. The front desk person even gave me a photo of me on my first day in Takayama as a souvenir. 
The food was excellent and the onsen was incredibly delightful after a day in the town. 
If you want to experience a traditional Japanese Inn or just want a wonderful place to stay in a fantastic and friendly town, definitely come here.

Best Inn Ever!

This is an amazing ryokan. The service was excellent and the food was beyond incredible. The onsen was so nice after a day of traveling. It was a cold day, but the room was very comfortable and the heater in the futon at night kept us warm. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.

Fantastic Stay

We had a wonderful stay here in Takayama and with very hospitable hosts, we were made to feel at home instantly. Rooms are basic but very clean. Onsen is good. Breakfast is delicious, with plenty of choice and variety all served beautifully and with much enthusiasm and care by the ladies. Dinner was lovely too, many courses all prepared carefully and served fresh. We felt very well looked after. Thank you!

Exceptional hospitality and a welcoming home to explore Takayama from

I've stayed at Oyado Yamakyu for 3 times over the last 10 years and am happy to report it has stayed the same - the staff are very warm and friendly, the food is tasty (and if you stay more than 1 night, the content of the dinner changes for the 2nd night), and a quaint environment full of trinkets and antiques. The staff were very kind to bring out a baby bouncer so my baby had somewhere to sit during our meals. 

What you get for a very reasonable price:
- Ensuite Japanese-style rooms with toilet and sink
- Shared bath (but there was usually no one, or maximum 2 other people in the bath even though I went during the peak period, on a weekend just before the Takayama Autumn festival) 
- Delicious breakfast and dinner with plenty of variety
- Commemorative photo taken in front of the inn
- Free parking for those who drive, and free transport to and from Takayama station on day of check-in and day of check-out for those who don't
- Laundry facilities available at 500 yen inclusive of drying and detergent

Still the same after 10 years...

Our first Ryokan.  This is something we wanted to experience.  Very welcoming hosts from the van driver, receptionists to the restaurant staff.  The futons possibly werent the most comfortable beds weve ever slept in (and what is it with Japanese pillows?!? - for a country that goes above and beyond for toilet seat comfort you would have thought that they would make a better job of the pillows!), but when in Rome … Similarly the public bathing experience is something to try - and in the onsen bath area here you get the chance in somewhere clean and not too uncomfortable (psychologically!).  Full instructions as to how to go about this are contained in your in room hotel info booklet.
The dinner available in house is great.  Multiple courses of fine local food.  Beer and wine available too.  All up this is a great experience that will give you many fine memories.  Takayama a fun stop for a couple of days - and you can do an easy day trip from here to Shirikawa-go and Gokoyama.

Our first Ryokan

Amazing ryokan. Can’t speak highly enough of it. Characterful traditional inn, nothing was too much trouble for the staff, futons really comfy, meals an absolute experience for the variety and amount of food provided. Would love to return. 

Stay here! 

Spent two nights at this delightful ryokan here in Takayama the back end of May. What a charming place to stay. The staff were very friendly and the hospitality was second to none. The onsen was impressive and welcoming. The Hida cuisine was an experience in itself, especially dressed in traditional Japanese gowns. The rooms are small, but retain the traditional Japanese style. If you find yourself in Takayama and want a true oriental experience. This is the place for sure 🇯🇵👍
