This is an old hotel situated next to a public onsen so you also have free access to the public onsen via a covered walkway about 70m away . 
Though the onsens there are bigger and prettier with three indoor pools and two outdoor ones , the bathing amenities are lacking with only one type of shampoo, conditioner and body wash . The onsens in the main hotel are smaller and the water is very very hot but the bathing amenities there are excellent with many varieties of shampoo, conditioners and body wash as well as scrubs. 
Dinner was only ok but breakfast was good . 
Rooms are big and quite clean . Wifi adequate . 
What I felt would have made the stay better would be the provision of bottles of water as well as better blacked out curtains. I was woken up at 530 am because of sunrise.

Old onsen hotel near a public onsen and good breakfast

Old hotel but the surroundings are still being taken care of. Few things i love here is the food we had for breakfast and dinner so delicious! The Onsen is very good. 

All room are carpeted and the carpet is dirty already so you need to wear room slippers all the time. 

Also dont go out the hotel 12mn onwards without the assigned personnel knows you'll go out or else he/she will turn off the door and you'll be locked out of the hotel.

Fantastic Onsen hotel

If you like flawless and modern hotels, don't go there. But if you don't mind so much faded walls and appreciate nature, a vast garden and big japanese-style rooms, do not hesitate. I read a very negative comment about the hotel onsen, and I really don't agree. I found the outside onsen very pleasant, with rocks and bushes and two big hot water pools. The location is ideal is you want to visit mount Aso and the price is very reasonable.

Old and tatty, but so charming

It is not difficult to find from google map, driving there. The room itself was good although the common areas do need to be refurbished. Dinner was at a separate building (?separate restaurant) and the onsen associated with the restaurant was larger but without much amenities, and more public. The outdoor onsen there was not very hot. The smaller onsen at the hotel was better and not crowded when we used it. We enjoyed the horse-meat sashimi dinner.

Good service and pleasant stay

This place was shabbier than I expected—it’s definitely seen better days. Staff were okay but I honestly didn’t feel very welcome as a solo foreign traveler. Most of the other visitors were elderly people or families with small children.
I chose this hotel because of the variety of hot spring baths they offer, but the spring quality itself seemed weak. 
At dinner time they served meat which had clearly suffered some freezer burn at some point, I could tell by the discoloration (and they expect you to eat this raw when it’s not even fresh). 
My room was quite large and the view of the outside mountain scenery was nice, but the lightbulb in the main bedroom had burned out. 
I used a coin massage chair in the hallway but it was as rundown as I felt after using it.
