This hotel suited our needs for this visit, a very traditional hotel, a little tired but more than made us for this in authenticity, nice on Sen and a superb Japanese breakfast. It’s not a deluxe experience at all, but the staff are friendly and the rooms comfortable - good value and a really nice welcome. Can’t really complain.

Mid Range but Good Value

The hotel is a traditional Japanese hotel, with no frills. Very clean and very close to Lake Ashi. The location is very good as its walking distance from the lake and tourist spots. 

The hotel staff barely spoke any English so we had some trouble communicating. The food was authentic Japanese, and since I am a veg, could hardly eat anything there. 

But overall a good experience. The rooms are spacious. The room didn't have an attached bath, so we used the hot springs, which was a good experience. We spent one night there, don't think we could stay there longer without an attached bath.

Otherwise the hotel was very comfortable. 

Somemay want to opt for a western room, unless you prefer the authentic experience. We had to spread the mattress on the floor and make our beds on the floor. I loved it.

I loved the experience at Ashinoko Ichinoyu

Stayed in this Ryoken at Togendai near Hakone. Decor is a little tired, but this probably adds to the charm. Staff were very friendly and enough English was spoken to communicate (sorry I do not speak Japanese). Food was excellent and they even provide a guide as to how to eat it and what was in each dish, which meant I learnt a thing or two. I slept in western style beds, which were ok, but not the most comfortable. If you are looking for a slick, Conde Nast experience, this is not the place for you. But if you want somewhere friendly, "real" and with a bit of charm, I would definitely recommend it. It can be accessed by car, or if you are using the public bus, there is a stop 150m from the front entrance.

Friendly, if a little tired

I love my trip to Japan so far. People, quality of infrastructure and cleanliness of the country.
Hakone is an amazing place and a must see in Japan but maybe not in this Ryokan.
Location is too far from the Lake and push you to stay there and not enjoy the incredible nature you have here, even the view is not great.
I have been very disappointed by the quality of the food and the quality of the room also. Air conditioning was not working properly and was almost impossible to sleep. Very difficult to complain because staff speak very few English and not able to really understand you.
I would rather pay a little bite more and get better place to enjoy Hakone.

Not the best Ryokan experience 

The staff here definitely ruined our experience. They were rude to us upon arrival, didn't want to communicate with us. When we made our booking, it came with dinner and breakfast but upon arriving, they informed us that we had to make a reservation the day before arriving (which was never communicated). The "day of" dinner was a very unappealing curry where as everyone around us was eating a lovely traditional Japanese meal. They should have been able to provide a nice meal for all their guests. They also refused to serve us alcohol with our curry even though the people with a traditional meal had beer and wine at their table. 

The onsen is for private use only from check-in until mid-night, and the schedule fills up fast so reserve as soon as you get there or you won't get to use it. 
The building is old and not overly clean. Little english spoken. Rooms are fairly large and comfortable, kettle and tea in your room, restaurant by reservation only.

Unfriendly staff, most expensive and worst stay we had in Japan.

On our trip to Hakone on 2nd April 2018 we enjoyed the Tozan train ride to Gora; Cable car ride to Souzan and the pirate shio at Togendai.
We stayed at Ashinoko Ichinoyu hotel an old looking hotel simple in furnishings but the dinner and breakfast was amazing.
