My family loves mountains and rivers and likes to get off the beaten path. So we came to Miki No Sato hotel in Maze. The facility is older, wifi in lobby only. Food is OK, locally produced but not quite enough for my young adult kids who are used to big meals in ryokan. However the 15 different baths are amazing! Absolutely our favorite baths in Japan. Especially recommend the outdoor baths, where you are surrounded by the beauty of the Hida mountains. In this way Miki no Sato is a more natural experience than Kinosaki onsen (more famous, upscale onsen destination town). No local entertainment. We enjoyed going to the Maze river. You can see the fly fishermen using the Tenkara method of fishing, which was pioneered here. My husband wanted to join them! Finally, you should expect speak at least some Japanese to come here. However the adventurous could probably get by with a smile and a phrase book.
