For the history-lovers: The building is ca 850 years old, from Mamluk period, and one from few that survived the earthquakes. It was wonderful experience, we get `jewel` room, spacious, clean, comfort, mysterious. OK, the bathroom taps were in poor condition, the doors too, but hei, this is Tzfat, it must be a bit messy. Forget about internet - with these one-meter-wide walls it can not work. Pay attention that check in and breakfast are in Rosenthalis hotel nearby. For us it was very expensive because of festival in these days, at the others times the price is reasonable.

The rooms were gorgeous and quaint. The staff was nice. I liked the location, as I could somewhat easily walk to town. Breakfast was awesome! A great and tasty selection of food. The downside was that not all the staff spoke English well. Shabbat made it extremely difficult to find food for lunch and dinner. Actually, it made it impossible. I could not find one restaurant or store open. It was like Christmas in the US, except it's every Friday in Safed!

Very characteristic of Tzfat

Beautiful, quaint hotel in a great setting

Avney HaHoshen is not a stand-alone hotel. It is one of three properties runs by the Olive hotel chain. The advertising is confusing, as the address of the building is indeed 23 Kaf Aleph street (which is actually a paved path and hardly a street), while access by car is from Tet Zayin street, just down from the Ruth Rimonim. Check in is at the Rosentalis Hotel, also on Tet Zayin street, which also houses the dining room for breakfast. The property itself is a renovated 200 year old house with lots of atmosphere of old Safed/Tzfat. We had a room with a loft which was very comfortable. The bed was excellent. The place was clean. The room was designed to preserve original stone walls (for atmosphere) and properly plastered and tiled walls. Everything was in decent operating condition, and the television was connected to the YES cable company with all of the standard YES channels available.. The building is about 100 meters from the Rosentalis, and access from Tet Zayin street is via steps and then along the paved path. It is all very quaint and lovely -- unless it is pouring rain. Which was our experience. The path served as tributary to the steps which became a minor stream - requiring some bit of maneuvering and having our shoes a bit soaked. Breakfast was basic -- but plentiful. Don't look for gourmet of your typical large Israeli hotel breakfast fare. Located at the southern entrance to the artist's quarter, this is an excellent point of departure to embark on a walking tour of the quarter and the Old City. But just remember -- this is a budget hotel, in a renovated old building, with reception in a separate building where breakfast is served.

Acceptable

First let me say that the bed was very comfortable, the air conditioner worked great, there was plenty of hot water and free parking available. Those are the only positive things I can say about our 2-night stay there. Only half of the light bulbs in our room worked. The WIFI Internet worked for a couple of hours, after that we had to use our data connection. The toilet lid was sitting in the floor and the seat was very loose. No soap dish in the sink or shower. The TV didn't work. At all. Probably because some stripped cables were sitting on top of the cable box. The desk in the room looked like it was from the 1930's (not a compliment). No chairs in the room. The night stands were so wobbly that I thought they would collapse. The coffee maker in our room didn't work, but we shared a kitchenette with the other room on our floor and there was a kettle there, but no cups. The breakfast buffet was pathetic compared to most Israeli hotels. Lukewarm shakshuka (eggs), sliced supermarket bread instead of the usual selection of rolls, some meager cucumber salads and a couple of cheeses. No toaster. The second day, the bread ran out in the middle of breakfast hours. When my wife told the employees, they just replied harshly, "No bread!" Despite the above, we had a wonderful time in Tzfat.

Buyer Beware

After several minutes trying to find the hotel (we had to call twice to get an accurate location), we checked in and were directed to our room only to find it looked nothing like the quaint pictures we saw online. They also don't tell you that the "amazing breakfast" they offer will be replaced by a smaller, simpler one during the weekend due to Sabbath observation.
