We stayed for 4 nights and had our breakfast here too. I enjoyed this place very much. It's not fancy yet it is very much the feel of Dublin. Wonderful breakfasts. Easy to walk to all over if your a walker. Not far from the Abbey Theater.

It's been a few years since I stayed here - way before 2016 so apologies for the retrospective review. The Townhouse was always the first place I thought of to stay when traveling to Dublin. Hopefully the service, helpfulness and friendliness of staff has not changed in recent times. The rooms were always clean and beds freshly made. The bathrooms were clean and showers hot. Tea making facilities, safes, wifi and TV in the rooms. Wifi also available on the gallery. Many rooms have views over the hotel's Japanese gardens. The breakfast room is pleasantly comfortable, bright and airy and the breakfast will set you up for the day. I love the hotel's links to Dublin's literary past and the quirky room names that reinforce that. The hotel is five minutes walk away from many of Dublin's historical sites and entertainment, e.g. O'Connell Street, Grafton Street, the Post Office and the River Liffey, pubs and theatres etc. Other sites such as Dublin Castle, Trinity College are within 10 minutes brisk stroll but Dublin is full of quirky surprises that you will encounter en route to the mainstream attractions.Several small markets, e.g. Cow Lane on different days, selling everything from cheeses to crafts. Close to the DART that will take you to attractions further afield. The hotel is also close, (walking distance), to the bus and train stations and the airport bus stops right by the front door!

My go to place in Dublin

I stayed here twice during my trip to Ireland in late July and Early August. My rooms were nice and comfortable. The Irish breakfast was good and plentiful. 

What really set this hotel apart was the friendly staff, including David. I was traveling to Galway and he recommended I take a tour with the Wild Rover Tour group to The Cliffs of Moher. The tour would go to Galway and I could get off there instead of returning back to Dublin. I wanted to see the cliffs anyway, so I saved money and time. Dave also helped me get to the sites around Dublin, riding the green buses.

Wonderful Hotel and Staff

Great value. Breakfast wonderful. Cozy place not too far from all the bars and nightlife. Like a lot of Dublin, the place has character. Service was fine. Generally a busy place. Overall it was a pleasant experience and well located.

This is a quite a tough one.

Every review on Tripadvisor should be posted with the best of intentions. After all, a hotel/ B&B/ hostel is someone’s legitimate business or employer so we’re clearly in fundamental “putting food in the table” territory.  

A review may well form part of a formal performance evaluation and so lead to a promotion, a  bonus, a warning or even a dismal. 

Accordingly, constructive feedback is the greatest asset of any business in the hospitality sector.

Some hotels run like Swiss watches, others need fine tuning and some need wholesale reworking . I’ve reviewed each kind.

But this is just carnage.

I stayed alongside a friend for just one night before a business meeting in Dublin. Frankly, there is minimal value in the Dublin hotel market and this seemed like a reasonable deal.

Here are the cold facts:

- Visibly disinterested check in staff.
- Appallingly  worn decor  in public areas.
- Labyrinthine, ill lit hallway layout, devoid of signage- frankly this is unsafe.  
- No towels in the hotel room- oddly, this is the first time that this has ever happened.
- Room design dates from the 70’s - the 1670’s.
- All signage and material within the room advertises another establishment ( the one next door interestingly enough). 
-Obvious signs of massive water (flood?) damage within the room.
- Incredibly cramped quarters for two people
-Poor water pressure in shower, lack of cold water, clear presence of grime…. You name it the bathroom has it. Its all stereotypical bad hotel stuff. 
- My bed was obviously and tangibly damp. My companion’s however was not. So, you know, flip a coin or something.
- Noise. The premise may well have been hosting a summit of irredeemable alcoholics.
- Naturally, I reported this nightmare to a staff member on  reception duty. This individual did not strike me as a particularly engaged listener. I was offered a  slight discount on a future booking. Lucky me.

Let me be clear:  

It may well be that everyone had a bad day and that the Covid ordeal has taken its toll on this sector of the market. 

Or it may well be that negligence on this scale  indicates systemic failure. 

The kind of failure that does not maintain fundamental safety practices though fire protocol or security measures.

Based on my experience, Im comfortable in my judgement that this is, by any measure,  a dreadful hotel.  Think “Fawlty Towers” without the giggles.

So what?

Maybe you’ll be more lucky, maybe you’ll spot a good discount, maybe you’ll  read other, more positive reviews and decide to take a chance. 

I ask you this: is it really worth the risk?
