Arni's Place

I don't get all the bad reviews for this place.  It's not luxury but it's inexpensive and just what I was looking for.  I have recommended it a few times.  The owners are nice people too.  It's right in the middle of downtown Reykjavik, but on a side street so there's not too much noise from traffic.  I slept well.

We stayed here for a couple of nights in Reykjavik. Its a b&b with well equipped kitchen and very clean rooms and washrooms.The host lived nearby, and we just had to call him when we reached to open the door for us and handover the keys. He was helpful enough to guide us about the nearby places as well.The location is close to the busiest street of Reykjavik, with good places to eat and see within a radius of 500m.
The best part of this place is, Iceland's oldest and most famous bakery is located across the street, 5 steps away. So enjoy your breakfast here.

I stayed in a single room which is just outside the appartment that is Arni's place. As others have said, there is no external sign and inside the main door there is no lock on Appartment, although all rooms have locks. I had my own toilet and sink and needed to use the shared shower which was through the shared kitchen in the main Appartment. I paid 10,000 kr per night and in Iceland this passes for good value! 

Tourist service: accommodation and food are in general excessive in Iceland and charges of 100 euro per night for a hotel with shared bathroom and share room is not impossible. I would say that prices are more than downtown London or New York.  Cities where land is at a premium, certainly not the case for Reykjavik. Hence the large number of tourists self cooking and camping. Considering Iceland's weather, camping is quite a sacrifice. 

I was able to contact Arni and was let in easily. You have to pay him in cash.  The impression is more of Air B and B. But the location is great. Despite being on the ground floor the street is quiet. So surprised. by the reviews mentioning noise. Arni, when you contact him is helpful and informal.

When I left, a lady was outside for more than one hour trying to contact Arni.  I also could not contact him when I checked out.  No reply to phone or text messages.  If this had happened to me when arriving my review would have been two stars maximum

Location great and for me it was ok, but it's not a hotel.  

Superb location and value for money

I was enticed by the WOW Airlines $200 round trip fare, but when I looked to book a room, and checked out restaurants, I realized just how expensive Iceland can be. It was a short stay and the $60 room rate at Arni's was good enough. They are certainly not luxury accommodations, but they worked. Some important things that others have mentioned; Arni's Place is on a street corner. Cars must come to a stop at the intersection and when they pull away, the sound is obvious. I had one of the singles at more or less street level and I could also easily hear conversations of passerbys. My first afternoon in, I tried to take a powernap, and found it impossible, even with earplugs. Fortunately, at night things quiet down a bit, and I found that wet toilet tissue stuck into my ears made for better soundproofing. I can understand that soundproof type windows might be expensive but Arni, spend a little money on room darkening shades. Whether it was the "sunlight" in the daytime, or the streetlights at night, curtains are shear and do nothing do darken the room.

Good Location

Great location - only a couple of minutes walk to the main thoroughfare in Reykjavik.  The room was very large, however the rooms on street level are very noisy at night.  The owner was very friendly and there was free wifi. The cost was very low for Iceland, however there is only one shared washroom.
Be aware that there is no reception, so you must either phone Arni upon arrival or have your taxi/bus driver phone him to come and let you in.  I had my iPhone and was able to iMessage him using the free wifi, which I picked up from outside.
