We found Hotel St Jacques on Tripadviser and it was everything you said. Very reasonably priced with la large, light and airy room with a balcony overlooking the valley and hills. The Owner was helpful, kind and courteous. The village of Vals is a pure delight. We had happened upon it as a friend was restoring a property there. The only downside for me personally was the rather steep hill to get to the hotel - ok by car but a challenge by foot. We spent 4 very happy days exploring the region from there.

Comfort in a Beautiful Village

My partner and I chose Vals-les-Bains as a convenient location to stay on our tour of Ardeche, and the Massif Central and this was the only hotel available.

THE POSITIVE: 

+ The location of the hotel is great as it is centrally located, allowing us to easily walk throughout the town AND located on a hillside, giving guests a wonderful view day and night.

+ Upon our arrival we were given a very friendly welcome from the owners and quickly shown to our room.  

+ The owners were more than willing to give us information on what there was to do and see in the town.

+ Flat screen television

+ Beautiful view from balcony

THE NEGATIVE

- The room was in need of updating as it was very much like walking into a room from the 1970's or 1980's.

- There was an insect problem in our room, which made sleeping impossible.  There were at least a few dozen small flying insects which congregated on the ceiling in the area directly above the bed.  They created a nuisance by the noise they caused when constantly slamming against the polystyrene ceiling, which was relatively minor at first.  This was further exacerbated by the fact that they were flying around us while we were in bed, constantly hearing that buzzing sound such as when a mosquito gets close to your ear.  Unfortunately it was so late when we returned to the room that there wasn't an easy solution to this, other than moving our things into the bathroom and sleeping on the floor with the door closed.  It seemed we were safe there.

- Dirty spare blankets: After deciding it was time to retreat to the bathroom to get some rest, I found extra blankets in the closest, one of which was obviously soiled.

- Overpriced (This would be acceptable had the problems not occurred.)

OTHER NOTES:

Upon telling the owner about our experience, they were surprisingly aware of the insects, but stated that the cleaners vacuum them up in order to get rid of them and that it was our fault for leaving the balcony door open (Please note that we intentionally left the balcony door closed other than for a total of 5 minutes, such that we would avoid any insect getting in the room.

VERDICT:

Great location, but I would not recommend booking as it is very overpriced, even considering the town it is in.  They could justify the price if they provided clean bed linen, better attended to the insect problem AND made some minor updates to the rooms.

Great location and friendly staff, BUT IN NEED OF IMPROVMENT

This hotel was a disappointment. I will not say that it was disastrous, but if you have the choice of where to stay, do not chose this one.

We were able to book a room rather late in the season, and we had to provide a 20EUR deposit, on a room that had a larger bed than usual (queen size instead of double). The room was quite clean but looked very quaint. For us youngsters it was almost disconcerting. The TV was small, but flat and there were at least 20 channels. The bathroom was quite spacious.

What turned the experience around was the presence of 'aoutiens'... small flies which apparently like 'white' and were against the ceiling all night. We had carefully not opened the window when our lights were on (it is the middle of the summer), yet the flies were everywhere. They did not bite but had the distinct mosquito sound, and they did not mind coming down near our ears at time... that was quite annoying, and we ended up sleeping in the bathroom!

No breakfast for us, but it seemed correct although quite expensive. Parking is limited, and the car access to the hotel not easy, but fairly well indicated.
