Wonderful 2 night stay in gorgeous Salers.  The hotel location is perfect, on the periphery of the village centre, with free on-site parking.  The rooms were spacious, and very comfortable.  We had a village-facing room, but it still afforded a quiet night's sleep.  Hotel staff are friendly and helpful.  We didn't eat the buffet breakfast or try the restaurant.  We've been meaning to stay in a Logis property in France for a while (having only dined at a few before), this was a great experience.

Perfect choice for Salers

Les Remparts is a little out of the way, but worth it. As soon as we arrived, we began to hear the tinkling of cow bells, which was absolutely delightful. We love walking the old streets. looking at the slate roofs, the tiny gardens inside the old city walls, the old buildings and towers. We love seeing how many of the roofs have gardens on them. We met several people there to hike in the volcanic area and nearby mountains. We also loved that they had a hotel cat, very relaxed with guests. Breakfast was a little odd, all self-serve.

Great Hotel for People Who Like Walking in a Photo-Rich Environment

We had been advised to spend a few days in Salers and we picked this hotel on spec. Booked for 3 nights and extended it to 4. The location is good, free parking right outside, helpful tourist office open most of the time and lots to do. The room was good and spacious, the Italian shower wonderful. The hotel looks out across the valleys and mountains so tea on the terrace was a pleasure. Breakfast was adequate but, we thought, expensive at 11 euros. If you didn't like Cocopops, you had to be down early to get the only packet of Frosties! Service was friendly and relaxing.

The Hotel des Remparts is in an ideal location at the top point of the town of Salers. The view from our room was fantastic, looking over the high pastures and green hilltops. There was a herd of dairy cattle in the pasture just below the hotel, and the sound of the bells each of them wore was soothing and lovely. 

The desk staff and housekeeping were helpful and friendly. I chose the hotel largely for its good reviews, but what tipped the scale was it seemed like the only hotel in Salers that had queen or king-sized beds.

I recommend the location and the views, but cannot recommend the restaurant at the hotel for several reasons. 1) The restaurant staff was rude. Simple questions resulted in immediate and obvious eye-rolling and sighs. As my travel companion described it, they had “bad energy;” 2) Breakfast, which came with the room, was mediocre, with a less-than-impressive selection; 3) Dinner, which featured local specialties, turned out to not be as good as the other restaurants we walked to in Salers other evenings; 4) The restaurant was swarming with flies. I don’t mind a few flies, and that close to dairy cows there were bound to be some. The Hotel Des Remparts dining room had a shocking number of flies. Breakfast bread and pastries were uncovered out on the waiting tables, and when we sat down each morning dozens of flies were crawling on the food, in our glasses and cups, on the napkins and cutlery. Swishing them away just created a cloud that soon settled back on the table. The one night we had dinner in the hotel we were vexed by swarms of flies as well. Other restaurants a short walk away did not have fly issues. 

Would I recommend Hotel Des Ramparts? Yes, for the room and location. But with so many other good restaurants a short walk away in Salers, some of which I have also reviewed here on Trip Advisor, I recommend skipping meals at Des Ramparts and simply enjoying its large beds and expansive views.

A-Swarm in Flies, But Otherwise Pretty Good

The hotel has everything to be fantastic. Excellent location, good rooms, good restaurant but the spirit to combine all these positive things to something making you to say whaaw here I want to come back is missing. Short telling it is good but it should be possible to make it excellent with a very little effort of the staff and the management. Going back ? Double feeling, maybe yes , maybe no

What a surprise to find a hotel of this quality. We arrived at 8pm and were shown our way to the dining area , after booking in for the night. Our table was on the terrace with a view over the farmlands. Our waiter was very efficient and took our order  for drinks and food. Between the 4 of us , we all took something different and were not disappointed. My son in law even got real rum with his rum and raison ice cream. The meal was fit for a king. We then went up to our rooms and again were not disappointed. Spacious , clean , ensuite bathroom and free wifi and again , a view of the country side. The management were very pleasant and helpful when asked for directions in the area. Salers has a real gem.

In the country side

We had visited Salers before, seen where this hotel was - up on the town's ramparts with great views of the Cantal mountains - but not stayed overnight. This time we booked in for a night and were delighted we did. 
The hotel and restaurant have been owned and run by the same family for many years. Everyone who works there are welcoming and happy to give advice on what to do and see. We had in fact come hoping to escape the mid-30s heat of the Dordogne valley but it was not much cooler in Salers at 900 metres. So, we slept with the windows wide open (and were not disturbed by the bells of the Salers cattle, as other reviewers have been). 
Our room was clean and comfortable. The only problem we had was not being able to access the internet. The hotel does have wifi; so I suspect the problem was with our provider (SFR!).
This is a great jumping-off point for mountain walking. You could start, as we did, by simply taking the path around the town, though be aware that it is overgrown in places.
Reaching the hotel by car can be daunting; Salers streets are twisty and narrow. There is parking by the hotel though you may need to get one of the staff to help you find a space.
