I stayed at Puembo Birding Garden for the night when I flew into Quito, hoping for some nice birding and photography opportunities. I was certainly not disappointed! Many species of birds attend the feeder, some of which are hard to see elsewhere, such as scrub tanager and croaking ground dove. You can also safely walk down the roads near the lodge and see many great species. The owners, Mercedes and her daughter, are experts and can tell you where to look. They were very friendly and are very helpful about answering questions on bird identification, good birding locations in Ecuador, and anything else you may need. They have some conservation projects with frogs, and explained the conservation of the frog species they conserve. Mercedes also cooked me a beautiful breakfast with hot coffee; I had a great morning photographing the birds over a nice meal! All in all, they were so generous and welcoming, and the location was beautiful. I highly recommend visiting, and it is a great option if you need to stay right in Quito!

Wonderful stop for birders or photographers 20 minutes from the airport!

Great place for birders.  Mercedes and her daughter, Kelly, were welcoming, helpful and so knowledgeable about where to go and best birding guides to use.  They arranged everything for us.  During our 3 night stay we ate all of our meals there and the food was delicious, rooms were nice and the garden was a treat.  I will look forward to visiting again.

We stayed at Puembo Birding Garden to start and end an organized birding and photography tour. Having stayed here previously, we arrived a day early so we could rest, relax and enjoy the beautiful grounds before leaving for our tour. The lodge is quite convenient to the Quito airport, and the ideal place to recover from a long day of air travel and to get acclimated to the altitude and the country. 

Owner Mercedes' level of hospitality is unsurpassed. The lodge is in a secure neighborhood and inside a locked gate, so there are no safety concerns. Rooms are very comfortable and convenient to the open-air dining area and bird feeders in the garden. The home-cooked meals are delicious! And even with a two-week tour, we saw several bird species only at Puembo Birding Garden, with great looks and photo opportunities. The scent of jasmine in the garden will remind you that you're at a truly special place.

Mercedes can also arrange a variety of tours for guests.

Very highly recommend!

Feels like staying with a good friend!

This is an absolute gem of a lodge near Quito. Clean, welcoming rooms abut a wall-less dining area with one-way class to watch bird activity in the delightful garden. The food is fantastic -- don't miss the daily pressed juices! -- and the staff is helpful and accommodating. I can't wait to return to this highlight of my Ecuador birding trip.


Charming stay

Mercedes has a lovely little BnB with a garden loaded with birds. Perfect place to spend a couple of days at the beginning or end of a larger trip in Ecuador. She arranged day trips to Antisana and Papallacta for us and her guides were superb. She provided box lunches and we had dinners at her place. Her cooking is excellent and the vegan and vegetarian in our group loved what was prepared for them. All around some of the best meals we had on our trip. 

This place is particularly good for birders as she has a number of specials there not normally seen on the typical birding routes in Ecuador (blue and yellow tanager, scrub tanager, saffron finch, and croaking ground dove). 

I have to add that Mercedes truly cares about your experience there and goes out of her way to make sure you have what you need. We had an issue with a misplaced passport and Mercedes went above and beyond helping us resolve the problem. She went far beyond what would be expected and she literally saved the day. We can’t thank her enough for going the extra mile and preventing what would have been a real train wreck. After resolving our problem, she even ensured that the person with the lost passport was able to join the rest of the group for a day of birding at Antisana. Remarkable.

Perfect little BnB near airport

I quite enjoyed chatting with Mercedes because she grew up in the United States. She is also a birder herself. The room was comfortable. I had dinner and breakfast there and they were both good. I certainly recommend her place.

A great place to stay overnight for birders

The best of all is the owner Mercedes Rivadeneira. She make this place feels like home. Besides grate food and beautiful garden with many mazing colorful birds visiting it Mercedes could organize birding trip for you  on very short notice. She set me up for Galapagos trip and when I came back and my flight back to US was late at night she suggested for me to use this time to go see Condors. She call guide and he took me high in Andes mountains where I saw condors and many other great birds. When I was back she fed me dinner and call taxi to take me to airport. Highly recommend  to all travelers to Ecuador start your trip from this place, especially if you are interested in birds.

Small but very nice bad and breakfast (and dinner) place with beautiful garden and tons of birds

Located just out of Quito, the Puembo Birding Garden offers excellent lodging, great food and the most warm welcome to all its visitors. Run by Mercedes and her daughter they offer wonderful hospitality. Would definately stay there again when visiting Ecuador.  For nature lovers, the one way viewing mirror set up in the garden allows you to view the many species of birds at close quarters.    

Hospitality at its best - Puembo Birding Garden

What can you say about a place that exceeded all your expectations!?!?  I was traveling alone, Mercedes made sure there was a driver waiting at the airport to bring me to Puembo.  the beds are soooo comfy and i got excellent sleep.  The birdwatching on the property and on the quiet street was amazing.  I wish i had an extra day to explore more.   The food is all homemade and excellent.  Even when I was leaving at 2:30 in the morning Mercedes was up and making sure all was well.  I really felt more like a guest in their home than in a hotel.  She arranged all my travel for me and a bird guide that was beyond wonderful.  I cannot wait to return.   Thank you so much Mercedes!!!!

It feels like coming home....

Puembo Birding Garden was our first stop on our first trip to Ecuador. It was perfect. The room and beds were very comfortable and clean and it was the perfect place to stay after the long flight. It is not very far from the airport compared to going into Quito. Mercedes and her daughter were wonderful hosts, providing delicious food, great conversation, and in depth knowledge of all the places to visit and things to see and do. The birds you can see in their garden are beautiful and they can help arrange trips to Mindo, Otavalo, and other destinations. The fresh juices and homemade sorbet was so good! We want to return to Ecuador to stay at Puembo again for more nights.
