Vigen Apartments

The name Hotel Vigen is slightly misleading for today it is no longer a hotel, but a complex of fully equipped and furnished rental apartments. They are located conveniently in the middle of the old town with easy access to stores, restaurants and supermarkets, but also very close to the bay and the harbor area with the 2 major attractions of Fregatten Jylland and the Glass Museum. The units are of varying sizes in 3 parallel buildings, the main building up on the street with a restaurant and café on the ground floor and the apartments upstairs. The apartments in this old building facing the street could be noisy sometimes during the busy summer season, the ones facing the courtyard are quieter after the café has closed. None of them have a bay view. In the newer 3 level building behind in the courtyard all units occupy the full width of the structure with a west facing terrace or balcony overlooking the bay. A small 2-unit annex halfway down the slope has terraces with outdoor furniture and the same gorgeous view, great for drinks at sunset. An indoor pool and solarium are in a separate building next to this on the same level. Our unit 15 in this small annex has by far the best location. Being on the slope its only natural light coming from the large front window/entrance wall. 2/3 of the floor space of approximately 860 sqf is occupied by the combined living, dining and kitchen area and the small separated bathroom behind it. The furniture are simple Scandinavian design of summer-house style. The living section has a couch, 2 small round coffee tables and 2 Rattan chairs and a flat-screen TV with DVD player on a small sideboard. The dining table seats 5 and the kitchen has an electric stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, small counter space with the sink and cabinets with dishes, glasses and cooking utensils. A coffee maker, hot water kettle and microwave oven complement the arrangement. The 2 very small bedrooms are parallel to this main space, divided by sliding doors from the living quarters. The front bedroom has a window and sleeps 3 with a single and 2 bunk beds, the other sleeps 2 in a double bed. With no windows in this space, it might be claustrophobic for some. There is no storage possibility in the bedrooms beside wall hooks. Clothing can be stored in wall cabinets in the hallway/utility area behind the bedrooms and adjacent to the bathroom. The small bathroom has a toilet, sink, curtained walk-in shower and a corner cabinet. No hair dryer. Water pressure and hot water were sufficient. Heat for all rooms is electric, no A/C or ceiling fans. Free Wi-Fi is provided on request. Limited international TV stations. Linens and towels are not part of the deal. If you don’t bring your own, they have to be requested at the time of rental and paid for in addition to the rental. No daily housekeeping services. Even though the office is only open for 1 hour a day, the manager has responded quickly to email in case of questions. The small private parking lot below the rental complex is not large enough for all the units. Additional free parking is available across the street on the lot of Fregatten Jylland. It can be difficult to carry suitcases up the stairs from the parking lot to the units, there are no elevators. All in all, Vigen Ferielejligheder is a centrally located and convenient vacation home in a beautiful historic town.
