It has been a few years since I reviewed Los Yoses, so an update is in order. Sadly, this place has not been kept up since my last visit. Although it was nice to see them getting around to painting the outside, it's the rooms that need paint and other forms of maintenance. I stayed in room 14 and it was dark and dingy. I thought I was staying in a cave since there were no windows to the outside world. One of the mattresses had large stains on it and needs to be replaced. It was such a filthy mattress that I doubt Godwill would take it as a donation for the poor. The walls needed paint and the toilet is located so close to the shower that a tall person's knees will hit the shower door. Don't lean forward while sitting or you'll get a bump on your noggin. It also doesn't help that the toilet is so low to the ground that I thought it was designed for small children. The shower's tile grouting is dark in places, suggestive of mold growing and the towels are frayed. The microwave has tape holding a piece in place and the frying pans are only good for gold panning (forget about cooking on them). On the plus side, the hotel staff are very friendly, they now have Wi-Fi in the rooms, the garage is still super secure and the location is terrific. The owner needs to invest in some improvements, or this hotel is going to go by the wayside. As it is now, the hotel is only suitable for college students. Families and business travelers should go elsewhere until improvements are made.

Affordable rooms with good location... revisited.

I stayed here for 7 nights upon arrival to Costa Rica for a 2 month consultancy with a local organization. I only stayed a week as although this place is affordable, I have a very small budget this visit and needed a longer term homestay. I would agree with other positive reviews in terms of location, staff, and the nice rooms. I had #34 on the 3rd floor overlooking the mountains and on the corner so I found it to be quite ideal in terms of view and noise. I left the curtains wide open the whole time and could see the lights in the distance below the mountains in the distance from the bed. I used the kitchen a lot and would only warn that only 2 of 3 burners worked well and there are no towels or dish soap so you'll need to pick some up. The Mundo Pequeno just right around the corner has all sorts of home goods for $1-2 so stop there for anything you might need (or ask at the desk--they might have more stuff). I bought a cutting board and a dish towel for $1 each. They have some dry goods like chips and cookies, but walk further up to the mini mart for more basics (coffee, beverages) or around to the back past the Mundo Pequeno for a Fresh Market. About a 5 minute walk to the west is the AutoMercado if you want a larger grocery store. 

Wifi worked very well the entire week.

Very nice and affordable place to stay for a while

I'm so confused by the good reviews - maybe my room was just a dud? I stayed here recently with a tour group and my room (either room 20 or 21) was gross. There was a toothbrush and toothpaste left from a former guest, the towels were grey (but had once been white), the shower door was hanging off its hinges, the blinds were black (but had once been beige), and the wall behind the bed was black from people's heads. I actually washed down the wall with soap before I went to sleep, but never got it off. My room looked nothing like the pics on the website. On the positive side, the bedsheets seemed clean. My fellow travelers thought their rooms were fairly clean, so maybe the housekeeper assigned to this room wasn't the greatest. I really couldn't wait to leave and fortunately only spent one night there.

I found the staff to be very pleasant and helpful, though. I just wish they'd give the rooms a nice deep cleaning (please, replace those blinds! Just paint over the grimy walls!). At least the floor was wood and not carpet, maybe there are fewer creepy things. I didn't see any live bugs but there was a smashed cockroach on the bathroom wall.

When staying in San Jose (15-20 times), I prefer Los Yoses for its affordable pricing, attentive staff and location in the San Pedro community in San Jose. The rooms are old, but the housekeepers do a good job of keeping the place clean. The check in staff are very friendly and attentive at all hours. If you are going to stay for a prolonged period of time, this is a good choice since most rooms have a kitchen. It has a safe and secure parking lot for rental cars.

Affordable rooms with good location

This hotel is one of the only accomidation options in the east side of San Jose near Downtown San Jose , San Pedro, Curridabat, Tres Rios and other close towns. The property is old yet a good value since the service and rooms are well maintained. Nice pool in the back area and across the street from San Pedro Mall
