Macondo Hostel

Great owner and staff who always care about your experience. A lot of knowledge about activities and very friendly and helpful! It’s a nice place to meet people who are a bit sportive and who are open to connect. Also they organise nice activities like Tejo or football with locals! For me it was perfect!

The staff at San Gil are extremely knowledgeable about everything there is to do in and around the area. They know everything from the bus timetables to the opening hours of various activities and are always available to organise any activities you would like to do while in San Gil. We ended up extending our stay here because we had such an enjoyable time. On top of this, the owner of the hostel, Shaun, went above and beyond for us, helping us to reschedule our bus and even dropping us at the bus stop. This hostel has a great atmosphere that caters for everyone, and they are willing to go the extra mile for their guests. Couldn’t recommend highly enough.

Can't say enough good things about Sean and the team in Macondo Hostel. We stayed with them for a total of 8 nights over two visits and were made to feel at home from the minute we arrived. 

The hostel is super clean, has good rooms (we were in 3 different ones), comprehensive kitchen facilities and a lovely jacuzzi/ garden area that is absolutely perfect to chill out in during any down time. 

The hostel is also the epicentre for activities in the area, so no matter what you are looking to do, they can sort you out. The guys also organise/ advise on free activities in the area (Tejo Tuesday, football, hikes, swimming holes etc) so great no matter your budget. 

The location is close to the main square but set back far enough to be chill, close to several good restaurants and coffee shops. 

At one point we both got a particularly rough stomach bug and the team made sure we were as comfortable as could be. In our twenty years of hostels around the world we've never been made to feel so at home as in Maconda so a massive "Thank you!" to Sean and team.


The atmosphere in this hostel is amazing! Staff and owner are friendly and knowledgable, decoration makes the common area like a little jungle heaven,drinks are cheap, kitchen is big, location is great. And free Tejo on Tuesdays!
Only issue is that the big dorm is connected to the reception by a window, so all the noise comes through in the morning. But all round fantastic place :)

Excellent location a few minutes walk from bars and restaurants in San Gil. 

Stayed in a double room with private bathroom. The comfiest bed we have ever come across in a hotel/hostel.

Shaun and his team are exceptional. They want you to have a great time whilst staying at the hostel, whether that's partaking in a free/low cost activity such as a visit to nearby Barichara to walk the camino,  or adrenaline filled white water rafting or paragliding. The staff have done many of the activities themselves and only use tour companies with a reliable and trusted reputation. Save yourself time and book through the hostel. Don't bother wandering around town, the prices are roughly all the same and you don't know who you are dealing with.

If you stay on a Tuesday night make sure you put your name down for  a game of Tejo. During our stay both Shaun and Carlos gave up their own personal time to join us playing the game ... a great night of beers and explosions!

Macondo Hostel is the best place to stay in San Gil. You will find a great common area with jacuzzi and beautiful trees and vibes. The internet connection works great and evrything is clean. The staff is friendly and helpful with the activities. Also helpful booking the transportation like next bus connection and taxis to move around. Best of Macondo organizing Taco night where a Mexican chef will gring tacos and margaritas for dinner (so delicious) and tejo activity a local game that it's so much fun and to put together a few guests going out for enterteintment

This was a great place to go as a solo traveller, they help you organise all the activities for free, definitely do the Tejo when you are there the whole hostel goes. They're really helpful with anything and good value for stay.

very comfy beds, the staff were great and so helpful, with plenty actives and knowledge of what to do around the area. 
only started for one night but wished we had time for more but it is what it is . 
HOT TUB is a winner also!

Macondo just reopened after having to close due to the pandemic. 
Great place to stay at! Good areas to chill or work, jacuzzi to relax after a day of adventure. 
Staff and owner are kind so very helpful booking those adventures but also for any information about the region and transportation.

Bookd for 2 nights stayed for three and could have stayed longer. Friendly and helpful reception staff who explained all about the activities on check-in and would answer questions at any time. Private room with hot shower was very comfortable. The communal garden and eating area is a great place to meet up with fellow travellers and is quiet after 11.00pm. Two minutes walk from Plaza Mayor and restaurants.
