I stayed in Motel168 for 4 nights. I was hesitant and apprehensive to stay in this hotel but my Chinese friend already booked it and I got a cheap rate for a standard room. The room was located on the ground floor all the way at the end near the emergency exit. Upon entering the room smelled musty. Rooms looked old and basic. There were 2 twins beds, TV, table, small wooden closet to hang clothes. The bed was not a spring bed. It felt like sleeping on a piece of wood, very hard. The bathroom had a shower (which had good water flow), basic amenities. Towels were worn out and tattered. Walls were thin so you could hear people talking, moving about in the mornings. Staff do not speak English. The location isn't bad, 7 mins walk to the nearest subway Line 7, but for tourists it's not convenient as you need to go to a more centralized area to eat, sight see. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for foreigners even though it's one of the very few chinese hotel chains that accept foreigners. It's better to pay a bit more but stay in an International chain like Ibis.

Not worth staying especially for foreigners

The quality standard is quite low. You can better go to an international brand such Holiday Inn for additional 15 USD/night. The rooms are very small, the cleanliness of toilet is not the best... and if you ask for a non-smoking room, no worries you will get anyway a smoking room.
The communication problem is another issue, sometimes nobody on duty will manage to communicate in another language different than Chinese =(

Poor service, poor cleanliness

We sadly booked this hotel (through Expedia) for a week whilst waiting for a ferry to Japan. We originally meant to stay in Shanghai only a few days but because of Golden Week the trains were full to Xian etc. As we are trying to travel on a budget we had to keep the cost fairly low. In hindsight we wished we had paid double to stay somewhere else. 
The surrounding area is supposed to be quiet, it is far from that. We can only describe the immediate area to be very run down and incredibly smelly. Businesses were washing their cooking pots, clothes etc in the street. Leaving a scummy waxy mess for you to walk over.
The staff at the hotel seemed to either do their minimum or pretend you weren't there.
The room itself had two of the hardest beds ever, we actually had bruises. The furniture and decor was old and grimy. Our windows, even though they were double glazed, had a gap in them and we could hear all from the street below.
When the staff decided to service the room they left us with towels that you would use to dry your dog with, and never bothered to fill the liquid soap dispenser. When we ran water in the bathroom basin we were met with a horrendous drain smell.
The only good thing with the room was the water pressure in the shower, very powerful. But then it leaked afterwards.
It actually put a downer on our whole Shanghai trip. Would never stay again.
