Jamison Guest House

The star of the show at this place? Definitely the building itself. Jamison Guest House is an extraordinary Edwardian architectural feast for the eyes that will probably leave you wanting to do a bit of exploring. The interiors look pretty well maintained too, with ornate high ceilings, wooden staircases full of character and matching furniture to round out your turn-of-the-century experience. The bathrooms have been tastefully renovated, though, so you can still enjoy a modern shower. The bed was very comfortable, and, despite the sub-zero temperatures outside, the heating was exemplary. We had to actually turn it down as it was a little too hot inside. Breakfast was included, and was certainly more than adequate, although the menu is not particularly expansive. I'm told the French restaurant on the ground floor is spectacular, but we unfortunately didn't get to dine there. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, particularly as we were not able to arrive until quite late in the evening. They were willing to have a chat despite being busy, and gave us some good advice at breakfast. The location is a bit off the main Katoomba drag, so those arriving by train will have a short, fifteen-minute walk. Plenty of street parking exists for those driving. Once you get there, though, what a view of the Jamison Valley! Sitting on the first floor balcony and taking in all the morning colours across the natural expanse was breathtaking. So, gold stars all 'round. Anyone who appreciates an architectural hundred-year-old adventure should definitely check the Jamison Guest House out.
