You get what you pay for! A small room with a double bed cost USD10. This is a no frills hotel very centrally located, only a few feet from the pier. It was never my first choice. However, it being the weekend and Vietnamese school holidays, Cat Ba was extremely busy and hence decided to stick with this hotel for a night.

There is a seafood restaurant on the ground level which can get very crowded with locals and smells of the sea food.
The building has no elevator and we had to walk up to get to the fourth floor. 
The room is basic with a double bed and an extremely hard mattress. The aircon worked well. There was also a small TV with local channels and an empty mini bar. The bathroom is messy with no separate area for the shower as a result there is water all over. 

There is a night club/disco in the building directly in front of the hotel with pumping music late into the night which is disturbing, one needs to carry ear plugs.

This place is good for a one night sleep over. However, book early and for a few dollars more one can find new and extremely good hotels in Central Cat Ba.

Old, Centrally located smelly Hotel!

Stayed at Pineapple hotel for 3 nights on April 15th-17th, 2017 (solo traveler).
This hotel is perfect for budget-travelers who spend much of their day on tours and hanging around Cat Ba island. It is less suitable for those who look for a luxurious hotel and to spend much time in it. The hotel is located at Cat Ba town main street, next to most of the restaurants, bars, hotels and touring agencies.
Mr. and Mrs. Pineapple, who run the hotel, were very nice and welcoming. I booked a boat tour in Lan-Ha bay and a hiking tour in Cat Ba national park through the hotel. I was picked up at the hotel in the morning. Both of the tours were absolutely great and I enjoyed both the company in the tour and the tour itself. Each of the tours cost 17-18$. Probably similar and cheaper tours can be found if surveying the various touring agencies in the town (probably could find as low as 13-15$). Again, I was highly satisfied with the tours I booked in the hotel. In addition, Mr. Pineapple helped me rent a motorbike and since it was my first time motorbiking in Vietnam (and ever), he gave me a short driving lesson and followed me in the first 100m to make sure I got the hang of it.
The room I stayed in (double room) was very spacious and clean, had a ceiling fan and a view to the alley. The air in the room was quite damp. The mattress was very hard, but I had a good sleep in all 3 nights. The room cost 7$ per night and it included breakfast (omelet).
BOTTOM LINE: if you are budget traveler/s and you don't intend to spend much of your time in the hotel, I highly recommend staying at Pineapple hotel.

Cheap price, great location, helpful staff, average room

We arrived sweaty, exhausted and hungry to pineapple hotel after an 18 hour journey from Sapa. We were so looking forward to a shower and to lie down for a bit. When we arrived they said they were full, and we replied we had a paid reservation since 8 days ago. They said okey just wait a moment and put us at a table in the restaurant which is on ground floor. We waited for some time then some one else comes up and asks what we want and we replied that we are just waiting for the hotel. He then goes on to tell us we can't stay there this night but we can tomorrow. He said he was sorry but that's about it. No help to find us another hotel, at the very least they should have asked is if we wanted some water. The whole thing was really unprofessional.  Turns out pretty much the whole town is booked out. After several hours of trying to find another hotel we found one over our price range but being exhausted we had to take it. In the meantime we found another hotel for the rest of our stay too, we won't be staying with pineapple at all. 

During my 5 month trip in Asia, and after lots of sketchy and cheap stays this experience is still one of the worst. If we booked and payed in advance they should not overbook, or at the very least help us out when they do. Also on another note the restaurant seemed loud and dirty, apparently they changed location recently. 

Won't recommend this to anyone.

Lost our booking and wouldn't help us

Great hostel to crash for a night or two considering how it's value for money. A stone's throw away from the main streets.

Could get almost everything you need from the staff here - bike rental, booking of day tour & bus tickets back to Haiphong/ Hanoi, and the where-to in Cat Ba island.

Value for money

Compared with other hotels it was cheap. Room was spacious and clean. Staff were friendly and helpful. They helped me to fix my bike, gave me a helmet for free and traveling tried to make me feel happy whole my time in their hotel. Wifi was so good . 
Ps: please don't close the door, I will come back late next time.
