The owner/operator is awful - rude, unresponsive, day drinker. I had a large group reserve last summer and she completely went against the deal made, provided nothing close to the service described, and here months later she has still not returned the deposit. This place should be shut down and I'll be making calls in an effort to do the Hood Rive COC and BBB.

Stay away

Made a reservation last year so we would have a place to stay for our family reunion.  But beings the Covid-19 hit we canceled our reserved room which was paid for in full.  When I contacted this person she said that she would give us a refund.  I didn't expect a full one but it wasn't my fault that the virus hit and everyone closed.  A few weeks later I called again and she was really rude and said we have been closed and no one is at the office.  Well so sorry that you aren't at the office taking care of business, but that is why it is not profitable to you.  So I will not ever be staying at that place or will never be making a reservation.  I can sleep on the ground for that price.

WON'T BE STAYING THERE EVER.

Simply put the manager has no class!!!!  ..She is rude ,quick to anger, smells like alcohol most of the time , and she runs a hole in the wall!!!  Its no Ritz Carlton thats for sure. Its untidy, no breakfast. Stay away!!!!

We booked there because it was last minute and it was the less expensive place we could find. The room itself was ok. Bed was comfortable, but it feels like an office turned into a bedroom...

The shared bathroom could have used some love (mean hair in the shower, running out of hand paper towel, etc)

The kitchen was probably what turned us off the most. We understand they are under some kind of renovations, but we could not figure how it was possible to not have running water and a sink in the communal kitchen! We had to go back to our bedroom to get water to make porridge , etc

At the end we found it was expensive for what we got ...

Not so good

Reading at the older reviews, it appears the owner has abandoned the place.

When I arrived early afternoon, it does not look like the hostels I used to visit. It was more like a community center.

The place was a zone of war with laundry (clean or dirty I don't know) everywhere in the corridors. 

It appears the place is going under some renovation. New walls were recently added or fixed. One of the seat in the corridor was full of dust. Nobody thought about cleaning it...

When I visited their patio, I discovered an outdoor sink full of cigarette butts (and not recent ones).

I was able to check in in my room immediately (economy single room USD 100 per night).

The bed was good and the sheets cleans. However, the floor was dirty with hairs, unknown elements and peanuts (yes peanuts). It seems they didn't use a vacuum cleaner in the room for days. I didn't say anything and had no time for this. I went discovering Hood River.

I had to share bathroom. Again, hairs on the floor, in the shower, in the sink. There was no covered bin in the bathroom for sanitary napkins. It was there in the morning and still there 24 hours later.

The hostel was far from fully booked (up to 5 people maximum). I would have expected a better cleaning of the common areas. They have plenty of time for this.

The common cafeteria can be resumed to camping tables and plastic chairs. The breakfast was almost non existing. No fresh product, nothing cooked although they have a professional kitchen on site and all the equipment. Few yogurts and peeled eggs in a shared fridge.

The place is 20 minutes walk to the town center. I knew it before booking, so no surprise here.

Overall, too expensive for what it is. Do not recommend. Untidy and dirty.

Quiet place but dirty, almost non existing breakfast

I've been staying at the Hood River Hostel regularly at least once a year for a weekend getaway trips. There used to be a nice breakfast included, but not any longer. The place is reasonably clean and check-in and check-out flexible with pre-arrangement. I would stay there again when I need to.

It is a clean place with flexibility for budget expectations.

I booked a room and showed up the night of my reservation.  Nobody was at the front desk and there was a number to call.  When I called nobody answered.  Lorena called me back 10 minutes later and she asked where I booked the reservation thru.  I told her I booked it with her.  Her response was "Oh God".  She finally shows up about 20 minutes later and then tells me she doesn't have a room for me as there is a water problem.  Mind you this is at 6:15pm.  I asked why I wasn't contacted and she responded with an attitude.  All the area hotels were filled so I ended up having to book a hotel an hour away.  She had offered to find me a room somewhere else but, then was going to do so on Expedia.  I tried explaining that she would need to call the hotel as my name wouldn't be on the reservation if she used her card.  She got absolutely crazy and screamed at me.  She then said she'd refund my stay but, 2 weeks later my card still has not been credited.  She gave me a print out of what was supposed to be a refund on the back side of paper that had the information of many other bookings including peoples credit card numbers.  It is not worth it to stay there.

*July 2019: All the negative reviews are true, stay away* Overall I would use the words unprofessional, untidy, untruthful, and scarce to describe this place. It’s a former business center turned into a “hostel”. There’s nothing residential about the place, and it’s a highly non-secure building (open front door 24/7). Sure, for under $100 for a place to sleep at night when other local hotels are $200+, you get what you pay for. I’m rating my experience so low because I feel like I was lied to on two occasions. One, the photos on Booking.com are way better than the actual private room I got, there is no “electric kettle, dining area and seating area” as in the description. Literally a bed, a lamp, a small mirror, and that’s it for the tiny room! Nothing else. Secondly, I arrived to no one managing the front desk and a note that read the manager was away at a “family emergency” and was accessible via phone if I needed them. (Note: this seems to be a common occurrence after looking at other reviews) I found a pre-arranged key which turned out to be the wrong key, not allowing me to lock my room. I called this “accessible” phone number 4+ times to no answer. An hour later, and after the time the note said the manager would be back, I finally got a call back. When the manager finally showed, she was clearly holding back frustration and anger when trying to find the right key, and she had attitude when I asked her simple questions about where to find towels, if there was a curfew, etc. After all that, I couldn’t even go on my laptop to use WiFi cause the signal was too light. Planned to ask for a partial refund due to issues, but surprise surprise management was nowhere to be found in the morning! Overall, extremely unprofessional and unsatisfactory. Would not recommend staying here at all.

Would NOT Recommend, Unprofessional and Untruthful Management

I used Booking.com to make this reservation in April 2019. Upon arrival she was not at the location but at the grocery store. 
She said she will be back in 15 minutes it was an hour before she checked on us. No towels no trash can in our room and although she said she would bring those things I still had to hunt her down as she clearly cannot complete a simple task. 

Lorena flew into tirade all because I asked her to email me proof that she reversed the room charges off my credit card. I have proof she charged my friend for the full amount AND myself since 4/27/2019-its now 5/9/2019 and although she said she would email me proof she failed to follow through. She also said the credit would show up in 5 days, well 4/27-5/9 is 13 days. Lorena is clearly a liar and a thief. 

I sense she’s mentally ill. 

PS this place is not clean there’s construction material beds, mattresses, furniture and junk in hallways, other dorm rooms, outside the doors, etc.

I filed fraud charges against Hood River Hostel on 5/9/2019 and have Lorena’s nasty messages proving she refuses to credit my card and send proof. 

Owner Lorena has serious issues. BEWARE of this hostel. BAD management, theft of funds, construction debris 

We stayed one night to break our journey from Seattle to Bend and were glad to leave.
We were exhausted after a 16 hour journey from the UK and then a 4 hour drive.
We had lunch and then went to rest but a few minutes later, a huge train passed nearby and the noise was phenomenal.
I asked about the train and was told it runs for 24 hours so I wNted to move to another hotel but we were so tired and it was a special anniversary for us so I asked to be moved to a quiet room. We were moved and the young man said, “ I moved you to an upgraded room”.
We never asked for an upgrade, just a room where we could sleep.
My husband and I had a very bad argument and it ruined our anniversary.
