The Red Lion

Excellent one night stay. Very warm welcome. Excellent friendly hosts. Choice of food was good and was piping hot. 

Everywhere was very clean and our bed was very comfortable and bathroom was spotless. 

The Red Lion is ideal location for Coniston and Lake District National Park 

Would highly recommend.

There's not really a lot to say - a small Lake District pub, just off the road to Coniston. Good food, good beer (in the current Good Beer Guide), a good room with a comfortable bed and also 'very good company'.

A locals pub with people in early and thinning out later - opening hours are a little limited but not so that you'd notice.

Second visit this year - this pub is on my list of 'approved stops'.

This was my second visit to the Red Lion in the past twelve months and it was every bit as good as my first visit.

This time I stayed in the twin room, which was just as nice as the double room I stayed in last time.

The room was spotless, really cosy and comfortable, with a lovely modern bathroom, that looked like it had been recently refurbed.

I was going to have the excellent fish and chips, but the curries on the specials board tempted me away and I had a fantastic cauliflower and sweet pepper curry, washed down with a prefect pint of Flat Cap ale, from the Bank Top Brewery.

I slept like a  log, as the area around the pub is just so quiet and the pub shuts at 10pm. 

If you want stay in a lovely, friendly, Cumbrian pub, away from all the toursity bits of the area, but still have access to likes of Coniston / Ulverston and surrounding areas, then I can`t recommend the Red Lion highly enough.

A massive thanks and hopefully I`ll be back next year.

We needed accommodation close to a wedding that we were attending.  Simply lovely and more than super clean.  The landlord and landlady are so hospitable and made us feel welcome. The beds were so comfortable and the window seat with a view was perfect for a wet windy morning reading a book.  The breakfast was the best I think I have ever eaten in and B&B and was definitely the best this year !  Totally can recommend this tranquil Inn.  

I stayed for one night, in October and I can honestly say, that the Red Lion, is one of the nicest places, that I`ve ever stayed at and I stay overnight in a lot of places.

As many others have mentioned, what makes the Red Lion so special, is the warmth and friendliness of the owners. Add onto that, that it`s a proper, unpretentious rural pub, that serves cracking ale and food.

My room, was spotless, with a comfortable bed and an enormous bathroom, with a walk in shower !

I had fish and chips for my evening meal, which was really good and a pint of the Croby Blonde Ale, which was one of the best pints, I`ve had all year.

After my evening meal, I retired upstairs and as I was getting ready for bed, I had the pleasure of watching an enormous thunder and lightening storm, over the fells in front of the pub, which was truly spectacular.

I slept like a log, as once the pub shuts (10pm) the only sound you can hear, is that of the nearby sheep and the rain ( it`s the Lakes ! ). It`s that dark outside, you don`t even need to draw the curtains !

My only regret, is that I was only staying for one night and I`d have happily stayed all weekend.

The Red Lion effortlessly gets onto my favourite places to stay list.

This town is tiny and a stop on the Cumbria Way. The owner went out of his way to be helpful and make us feel welcome and the food in this small hamlet was simple and delicious. If you are walking the Lake District and want an out of the way spot that is unpretentious and cozy, I say this is a good spot.

We stayed here one night after a day at the races couldn't have been accommodating. Lucy and Steve couldn't do enough for us. Room was larger than we expected and very clean and the water is always a plus. One regret we didn't book 2 nights.

We've just returned from a week in a cottage on a sheep farm a few miles from the Red Lion (which was our nearest pub).  It was a really homely and welcoming place to enjoy a few drinks and have a meal. The owner and his staff were really super and interesting to chat to as were the customers. Two of them in particular were really knowledgable about the area and places of interest (and 101 other subjects too). The Red Lion (which is also the name of our local pub in Market Drayton) is to be thoroughly recommended. They also have accommodation and we'd most certainly stay there again for a long weekend.
